It’s super difficult if you have no idea how to cut the corners and miss the ambushes and such, and it’s near impossible if you don’t know enemy patterns, especially things like the Capra Demon or Ornstein and Smough bosses. Gets easier once you’re more acquainted and have made your way through once or twice though, it’s really one of the best games I’ve ever played, it’s near necessity by this point to have it.
If you do get it, I apologise in advance for Blighttown.

Maybe I’ll rent it, again.

Oh man you’d need to buy it, ain’t no way you’re getting through it all in the time they give you for rental. Even if they gave you a couple months, you’d still only maybe get past Anor Londo provided you didn’t follow a guide, and there’s a long way left after Anor Londo.
If you do rent it, always pick the Master Key at the beginning and look up when and where you can use it, it bypasses a ton of shitty parts and will make navigating the game quite a bit easier.

It’s definitely a purchase. Once you learn a few little tips and tricks it becomes much easier.
Light armour and fast roll is superior to heavy armour and slow movement. Harder enemies will kill you quickly regardless of your defense if you just stand and take punishment.
Try and fight enemies 1 on 1. Use a basic bow or crossbow to lure them to you.
Use pyromancy. It doesn’t require any stat investment and is extremely powerful.
The resistance stat is utterly useless.
Its also no where near as hard as people like to claim it is. It just requires a more patient playstyle than most modern games.
Anyone else remember the “System Shock” games? They were awesome for atmosphere. I was a sucker for Ultima Underworld too (actually, all of the old Ultima games)
Ico (GOD DAMN YOU PRINCESS STAY AWAY FROM THE SHADOW PEOPLE)
Doom Ultimate (that part in the where the lights go out and you have to make your way in total darkness, except for some red tiles on the floor? Never again)
Quake (a Trent Reznor soundtrack can make anything creepy)
Tail of the Sun (lesser-known PS1 gem, great music, open world, suffered from the lack of structure)
Serious Sam ('kay, so it’s not exactly “atmospheric”, but deal with a few of those headless dudes with bombs for hands and see if you don’t jump out of your seat and start shooting every time your hear the telltale AAAAAAAAAHHH in the distance)
The Binding of Isaac (for those of you who haven’t played it, picture a randomized Zelda, except instead of a twee little elf-man with a magic sword, you play an abused child who fights off hordes of spiders, spectral fetuses and various misshapen creatures…with his tears. It’s pretty great, and the music alone is scarier than some AAA titles)
