Vegas Shooter Kills 50+

Fair enough.

I was thinking that folks at the front might have noticed if he was carrying all that luggage in, but if he did it over several days then no one would care one bit.

And, even if he had noticed… what are they going to do about it?

LV Sheriff and the FBI disagree during press conference. Paddock may not have acted alone.

Most interesting exchange:

"Danley, 62, released a statement after being interviewed by FBI agents, saying she had no idea of the massacre her partner was plotting when he sent her abroad to be with her family.

‘It never occurred to me in any way whatsoever that he was planning violence against anyone,” she said in a statement read out by her lawyer. “He never said anything to me or took any action that I was aware of that I understood in any way to be a warning that something horrible like this was going to happen.’

Lombardo, in another surprising remark, appeared to cast doubt over those comments when he said at the press conference: “Any person put in her situation would probably answer in the same way.”"

Damn. Think the Sheriff of Vegas has been lied to before?

Both of these can’ t be emphasized enough.

In many ways, one feeds the other (and visa-versa).

I’m starting to think this may be another example of the societal changes that concern me. This person was a relatively well educated and affluent man. The disdain for others and their beliefs that the upper class left has been demonstrating so often on social media is starting to blossom into a disdain for others’ lives. I could be wrong, but I’m curious about what is written on the note he left in his room.

I hear North Korea never has these sorts of shootings…

Why is every news outlet calling this the worst US shooting ever, do they not know about Waco. What I find odd is how for his first crime he premeditates, plans and shoots 500 people.

I’m not sure you have your facts right on Waco, I believe most died in a fire? Wounded Knee is arguably the worst, but it was the almighty government, the group we’re supposed to trust with our personal safety, slaughtering men, women, and children so I guess they get a pass.

Shapiro should take his own advice as he confuses fact and opinion as much as the people he criticizes for it. An example is when he says that the Founders would have wanted citizens to have AR-15s since they are military grade weapons. That isn’t fact but speculation. Shapiro bases his opinions on interpretation of facts that go through his specific values filter. This is no different than many of those he accuses of simply being guided by feelings.

I went to the SHOT show (large gun trade show in Vegas) in January.

I walked through a lobby of a major hotel with a prototype sniper rifle (in a bag) and the only question I got asked was “what caliber?”)

For all the difference here on stance…Its still not the shit show that is Facebook…made the mistake of going there yesterday. Notice all the morons reposting shit about how its conspiracy multitple shooters ect ect… After all this Russian fake Facebook crap people still buy into this nonsense. At the end of the day its just sad. We now live in a country where basic shit like droping yur kids off at school could be your last. Going to a movie ect ect. Maybe gun control wont stop this stuff idk. But maybe theres a way to profile these guys and prevent it somehow. Seems to me all these mass shootings have one thing in common. Rapid purchase of guns and ammo in relatively short period. Not saying people shouldn’t be allowed to obviously there are collectors with no bad intentions. But surely some follow up or extra checking could help. Although based on news this guy was clean as a whistle. But maybe it stops guys with heavy indicators. Curious as to what gun enthusiast think would be a solution.

about 300 Lakota murdered after weapon confiscation effort by government.

Being a member of a disarmed people at the mercy of the US Government, I advise against it.

True. Except for anti-aircraft fire.

The killing fields of Cambodia are also strangely silent after the populace was disarmed.

I don’t think there is “one” solution, nor any solution perfect.

Israel has been on the receiving end of more attacks of this nature than any country. They have theoretical gun control, but basically every citizen is ex-military and has access to a firearm, and carries something. That cuts out up-close-and-personal attacks like Paris or Orlando because several people in the crowd will be armed and stop the attacks shortly after starting.

They profile potential bad guys and rain hell on friends and family of bad guys.

They have building codes and event codes to make mass sniper shootings and IEDs more difficult/less effective.

They’ve trained their population on what to do, and most everyone has safe rooms and things like that. Especially schools, sporting, and other public events.

And they have squads that come wipe up the blood, sweep up the dust, and repair the windows in a matter of hours. No teddy bear memorials to encourage the bad guys. Business as usual, promptly.

I think this is something we could definitely take away from their methods. One of the biggest problems I see with these crazy idiots is we immortalize them. If you commit a mass murder in America, you can rest assured that the public at large will plaster your face on every screen, analyze your entire life to the most granular level, and ultimately remember you forever.

Imo when these mass shootings happen, we shouldn’t be disclosing the name/face of the shooter. Let them get what they deserve. Being erased by history. Make them forgettable. Make sure the end message of a mass shooting: “you’re going to die AND nobody will ever care. you’re going to be forgotten by history, we’ll see to it.”

It’s an impossible situation to solve. People have been killing each other for centuries. Long before firearms were invented.

This is a particularly odd one. From what’s been reported, the guy was educated and well off $ wise and he was apparently stockpiling for a decade plus. Maybe he was radicalized maybe he just snapped who the hell knows?

Even if we ban all firearms and confiscate everything people will just pick a different tool to get the job done. That’s human nature.

Generally, I think we need to focus more on a) suicide prevention and b) getting people opportunities to be successful in life. Teaching trades, for example, so young men can be gainfully and meaningfully employed as opposed to running the street with a gang trying to make money by selling drugs.

I also think we need to have a serious discussion about why single family motherhood and divorce has skyrocketed and how to re-popularize the family. It’s not popular, but I think that’s a huge part of the problem.

I had a pretty in depth convo about this with a couple people a while back. Curious on your thoughts on the primary cause we ended up agreeing on.

What portion of the increase in divorce to you think can be associated to “Men historically treated women like shit and they began to stand up for themselves en masse”

That was the consensus of the short WaPo piece by a former FiveThirtyEight’er that @anon71262119 linked above.

“Then, my colleagues and I at FiveThirtyEight spent three months analyzing all 33,000 lives ended by guns each year in the United States, and I wound up frustrated in a whole new way. We looked at what interventions might have saved those people, and the case for the policies I’d lobbied for crumbled when I examined the evidence. The best ideas left standing were narrowly tailored interventions to protect subtypes of potential victims, not broad attempts to limit the lethality of guns.”

“Instead, I found the most hope in more narrowly tailored interventions. Potential suicide victims, women menaced by their abusive partners and kids swept up in street vendettas are all in danger from guns, but they each require different protections.”

That may be part of it. Remember marriage was a tool to keep men around and responsible for their kids. Cause a certain percentage tend to just bail when there’s no legal/social pressure to keep them around. Back in ancient times when marriage was “invented” bastard/orphaned kids and abandoned women were at a real danger of dying if their family/religion wasn’t able or willing to help them.

Marriage is primarily a tool for public order. Strong nuclear families make for stable societies. The offspring have better outcomes in stable homes.

I think the shift of society seeing marriage as only a love story didn’t help. There’s always been tales of romance and such… But that wasn’t the whole story.

We live in an instant gratification, narcisistic broken society. People need to teach kids that marriage is hard work before they go in. The first time Harry and Sally argue about the family budget, it’s time to call it quits because the warm and fuzzy feels are gone.

My $.02. Also, get off my lawn!
