NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - The breast-fed infants of two mothers who did not eat any animal products, including milk and eggs, developed brain abnormalities as a result of a vitamin-B12 deficiency, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (news - web sites) (CDC) reported Thursday.
In the January 31st issue of the Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report, Jefferds and her colleagues describe the cases of two babies who showed signs of brain abnormalities as a result of a deficiency in vitamin B12.
In one case, doctors examined and diagnosed the deficiency in a 15-month-old child with slow growth and mental development. Her mother said she had avoided consuming all animal products for many years, and had breast-fed the baby for 8 months after birth.
After receiving supplements of vitamin B12, the child began to improve, but was still below her age group in speech and language at 32 months of age.
Further proof that this is just a dumb way to eat. And yet most vegans think they're being healthier. Ironic.
There was a story a few months ago in the local paper about two vegans who put their infant on a vegan diet. Social services came in and took the baby away and charged them with child abuse or endangerment, can’t remember which. The baby had to be taken to the hospital it was so malnurished and near death.
A well balanced Vegan diet has plenty of b12(many vegan products are fortified with b12) and b12 deficiencies are easily remedied by taking a b12 supplement. Steve69 the stroy your referring to involves women that did not feed their kids properly that happened to be vegan. It was not because they were vegan. You can certainly be healthy on a vegan diet and I am proof of that.
there really is no “point” to being vegan, its just a simple self crusade like being very into religion or working on cars. just take it all with a grain of salt.
I believe someone can be healthier or unhealthier on a vegan diet, depending on how good it is and how their body runs. For a couple months I experimented and cut out all animal products except for one can of tuna everyday and would go out for sushi sometimes. I ate the same amount of calories as before and included high-protein plant foods in my diet. I lost 30 pounds in 2 months, but much of it was muscle. I wasn’t even weightlifting much at the time either.
