Van Halen is Back

This poses the question,

Will there ever be another Mega-Rock band like VH again?

Sure there is tons of nostalgia and great music from what these guys did all the way up to “1984,” but are people only going to see them because of their catalog, or are people ravenously hungry for a rock show that blows their insides out leaving them numb from the awesome?

Off the top of my head, there is no other band thats’ active and touring who can provide the kind of mojo VH did back in their day, even when Sammy was the frontman.

U2? Too preachy
Bon Jovi? Too Lame
Kiss? Too old
Journey? No Steve Perry = no real Journey
The Boss? Not “hard” enough, plus Clarence has passed.

Wolfmother maybe?
Mastodon? Probably too narrow an audience…

What do you all think
TOOL?
FooFighters?

I like it.
Not old school awesomeness, but hard and rough sounding.
DAvid Lee Roth needs to relearn how to lipsync during music video shooting though.
The song blows. Bands like this should just stay dead. Nothing will ever compare to the great music they use to make.
Disagree with you regarding the song. I like it.
Agree with you about the difficulty in capturing the newness of the sound and what they were back then. I don’t think it can be done; on the other hand, I am one who likes to see what new material these “old bands” can muster these days.

The lyrics, ugh, awful…

BUT Eddie can still shred better than damn near anyone out there, and that makes this more than worth it to me.

Great thread. Their opening tour is in North Carolina. I’m gonna buy a ticket if they’re not sold out.

yep - they’re playing at the Oakland Coliseum June 3. I’m planning on going, hopefully.

if DLR don’t break a hip between now and then, that is~

I doubt he’ll do the stage antics he performed in the 70’s and 80’s.

That song is awful.

How long since the last album and all we get is some 2nd cut b-side song that didn’t make it on another album? There was a reason it didn’t make any albums.

EVH is a guitar god and absolutely one of my greatest influences, but this song is DISAPPOINT!

Chickenfoot: 2
New-Old Van Wolfgang: 0

*This is better than anything on that godawful VH III album with Gary Chokethebonerone.

Cherone was good in Extreme, imo.

I missed them when they played in my town twice in HS, swore never to miss them when diamond Dave got back in the fold. I have to find a way to go to this show.

My fear is Eddie butchering eruption live, kinda like a singer not being able to hit the high notes. I know he can still play but fuck me it’s ERUPTION!

As far as the new song goes, if that’s the best they got hoo boy, not good.

Tickets in Toronto are $165 upper level and $87 lower level Air Canada Centre.

hater

They never release the really hard-rockin’ songs as the first release from an album. They release something lighter and more “radio-frinedly.” “Jump” was the first single released on 1984 and all the real fans puked in their mouths a bit. Then they heard Panama and Hot for Teacher and Drop Dead Legs, and all was right in the world again. Just wait.

Yeah, not impressed with new song.

Way past their prime.

It’s no secret that Eddie and Alex have absolute control of every facet of VH - creative, business, studio, etc.

DLR is there and subdued. He doesn’t have the free reign and creative/expressive freedom he had back in the day. It’s not unlike Joe Walsh with the Eagles-- there, but subdued, caged, and micromanaged.

As long as that’s the case, not much excitement will come out of the studio with this lineup. The live clips that I’ve seen from the last tour looked great, so they have that going.

I almost pulled the trigger on a few $165 tickets last night, but in the end, I didn’t. I think I’ll buy an amp.

I saw them when they did the 1984 Tour.

couldn’t hear for 2 days.

This is how I ended up after a Ramones show in '85. Everyone speaking had a lisp for 3 days.

Same with Soundgarden in '94.

Here, I found something that rocks harder than Van Wolfgang:

Just listened to their first single and I must say I’m not real impressed, but it’s what I expected them to sound like (stuck in the 80’s)

I guess I need to hear the rest of the album, but the band really needs Michael Anthony.

Yeah when they tried that “Me Wise Magic” song with DLR a while back it fell super-flat. DLR wasn’t let of the leash at all.

I haven’t heard anything yet, want to take in the whole album. Perhaps Dave just can’t hit it anymore and they are not going to let him crash. Like Don Dokken has. Anyone else heard the last Dokken album “Lightning Strikes Again” (2008) Don was a great singer but his voice is shot and you can really hear it on that album.
