If there is a police union, it is difficult to fire any union member. But I can’t see a rank and file person having any responsibility when their superiors are there.

Union or not. This act of cowardice ought to take precedence. They along with their superiors need to be fired. 21 humans were murdered while they just stood around. Excuse me, they apprehended the parents who were trying to save their own children and do the job of the police since they chose not to do their job. No excuses. GTFOH!

Everyone seems to be jumping on the, “Oh yeah, they’re supposed to stop the shooter” bandwagon. It doesn’t sound(that could change, with more information) like that was really a good possibility for the first few on scene. It does sound like the school’s door lock failed. Perhaps schools should get away from automatic locking doors-make staff responsible for keeping doors locked.
It sounds like the shooter was concealed in a classroom with a locked door and multiple students. A doorway is a “fatal funnel.” These guys would have had to spend significant time in front of the doorway, to force entry. The doorway also would have worked as something of a force multiplier for the shooter inside the classroom: only one or two(at most) officers could have entered at time.
The shooter had a rifle, and responding officers likely were not equipped with body armor that could stop rifle rounds.
Many oppose the “militarization of police.” Think they want to equip patrol officers with rifle-rated body armor? You think they will be fine with kids being killed by responding officers exchanging gunfire with the shooter? How about equipping Patrol Officers with flashbangs?
The narrative being pushed is that good guys with guns don’t help anything(so no reason to allow anyone to keep firearms). Hate to break it to the morons out there, but good guys with guns DID stop this one. No one says that good guys with guns can create a perfect world without murders.
New police tactics: Can’t establish head control in a position that permits you to keep an eye on others, but you can throw a flash bang into a classroom and shoot through the door in order to confront a now-disoriented shooter and shoot it out with him without regard for others in the room.
It’s also worth mentioning that police would have been criticized if the shooter only shot 2 kids. Or 1. Or had gotten into the school.
Police have the impossible expectation of keeping everyone safe from everything while risking being shot for less than 6 figures a year. There are certainly better choices that could have been made by the police dept here, but i doubt any of us have charged into a building with an active shooter when we knowingly are outgunned.
MAYBE, without hindsight. With hindsight, I guess they could have been at the house and taken him out before he hurt anyone.

40 minutes is a long time. It’s even longer when you’re hearing gunshots coming from inside of a school. I’m not a fan of couch quarterbacks but that is a really long time to do nothing.
Of course, the shooter could have been there for 20 minutes and my last statement still stands. There is no ‘acceptable’ ammount of time for an active shooter to be in a school, so response time will always be inadequate.
Still, 40 minutes?

I have heard that some parents went into the school and got their kids out, have no idea if this accurate or not

They better come prepared to fight to the death if they think they were going to handcuff me and stop me from protecting my kids as they stood around with their thumbs in their asses.
The bad thing is they just had this sort of training a few months ago to address a school shooter / barricaded shooter. They had plates (not sure if level IV) and SBR’s from the pictures I saw. It is regular issue near me for police to have an AR and shotgun. These folks are cowards and shouldn’t be wearing the badge.
They could have at least given the Border Patrol Agent one of their rifles and vests they weren’t using.

Shoot him? Run over him? Smash him into the building with a cruiser? Something?
He had already shot somebody and had engaged them.

This is a timeline. Of course, I have no idea whether it’s 100% accurate. It looks like police were only there for rounds fired at door/s and them. Again, I have no idea how accurate any of this is, or whether officers knew at what the shooter was shooting.
I’d charge in there no questions asked. Cops want to arrest me? I hope the pork chops have been training as hard as I have, otherwise they’re going to look like fools and cowards.

I understand, but if someone with a gun busts into a school full of kids and you start hearing gunshots - I think it’s reasonable to assume he’s not firing blanks, and he’s not giving warning shots.

Yeah it would become a very bad day for them if they tried to stop me while doing nothing.
I thought they had exchanged fire with him before he entered the school from the first reports I heard. They were in pursuit of him is why he wrecked out from my understanding.

Not according to this and other timelines I’ve seen.
That was what was first reported, but I’m pretty sure at this point that was just bullshit to make the cops look better. Since those first reports, this information was never corroborated. And we’ve all seen the video of him walking into the back door of the school at this point (I assume you have too). There was no engagement with officers at that point. If there had been gunfire outside the school prior to him entering, everyone inside would have heard it and locked the school down (at least the classrooms). So that initial timeline just doesn’t pass the smell test at all.

Police have said he was not engaged prior to entering the school. After crashing his truck he fired a few rounds at some folks at the funeral home across from the school, and then hopped the school fence and walked into the school.
