Uvalde School Shooting

This is a really interesting subject in general. It’s the Superior Orders/Nuremberg Defense. There’s quite the history, nationally and internationally, of this excuse being used, and over the centuries, court rulings involving this defense have varied tremendously. The moral ground of this defense is certainly questionable.

That’s not to say that I think the Uvalde police officers who were following orders actually broke any laws. But I think the moral ground they stand on is shaky. I will absolutely concede, however, that it’s perfectly reasonable to take your side on this one. I think there’s an argument to be made either way, and the details/circumstances matter a lot.

And in any event, we at least agree that the lead officer is the most culpable here, by a long shot.

From the doc, pg. 8:

A first responder unwilling to place the lives of the innocent above their own safety should consider another career field.

“This scale does not suggest that any first responder approach the mission with reckless abandon for safety. The first responder using effective tactics coupled with situational awareness can isolate, distract, and neutralize the actor(s), while mitigating the loss of innocent life.”

“Officers have three primary goals in responding to an active attack on their school. These goals are:
ISOLATE – Drive or segregate the attacker in an area where their capacity to harm students, staff or visitors is minimized until more first responders arrive.”

I don’t think doing nothing qualifies as effective tactics.

Or just stay outside looking tacticool.

Police, but usually the morgue is more appropriate.

Yeah, leave it to you to make excuses for the cops. It was the door. Fuck those loser-cowards! The parents who were not armed were far braver that the God damned police. But the police got real tough tasing and handcuffing them. But when it came to children being shot to death the police reverted to the fetal position.

No the police ought to be demilitarized and still do the job they signed up for like “stop the shooter”. How about common sense gun reform. Why should an 18yr. old be able to buy an AR-15? Why should anyone?

What’d they do?

You’re a dumbass.

No…unless, by “common sense,” you mean, “get rid of all federal firearms regulations that are obviously in violation of the 2nd Amendment.”

Because he can join, or be drafted and forced to join, the armed forces.

Because 18-year-olds in the military have them(well, similar).

Except full automatic

And? They don’t just give soldiers guns to take home with them. They are issued weapons and are supervised. They don’t own the weapons they are issued.

IMO, if you join the military, with your military ID you can purchase anything that a 21 year old can purchase in the state that they make the purchase. Either that, or no military person under the age of 21 can be sent anywhere outside the borders of the USA.

The thing is, one volunteers for the military. You know the deal going in.

And if you are drafted, it means there is a war and you will be active duty. If you are an 18 year old draftee and suddenly can purchase a gun, where will you bring it? Bases have rules with regard to gun ownership.

Not all 18-20 year olds live on base or on assignment 365 days a year.

Are they draftees or volunteers?

Makes no difference draftees or volunteers. If our country is asking them to risk their lives to protect ours, it is disingenuous for us to prevent them from protecting their own lives when at home.

You say that they volunteered to get in the service, then allow them to decline to go overseas without consequence. Let them return from overseas deployment on demand. “I made a bad choice. I don’t want to do this. Get me airfare to go back home.”

If 18 year olds are not considered mature enough to handle a weapon, then they are not mature enough for other adulthood matters

having kids
Driving
Military
fire or law enforcement
Government office
Voting
Marriage
Buying a car or home

Etc

What did the police do?

Oh that’s right they stood around and circle-jerked. And arrested parents.

Pot, kettle, black.

Didn’t know the draft was still in effect. Thanks!

Oh so I guess that means civilians should be able to get military weapons

It pretty much works like that already.

You made the claim. Present your evidence. I made no claim regarding the bravery of anyone.

If you’re an American male, you likely registered.

Certainly.

Yet no response to the first paragraph?

They volunteered.
