Currently, only Orthodox rabbis are allowed to marry persons in Israel. People of different religions cannot be officially married.

What the Israeli constitution says and what the reality is are two different things.

We would be the equivalent of Israeli “democracy” if we only let white Christians marry, own property and have first digs at jobs and had segregated neighborhoods and schools.

Despite his obvious ignorance Oklahoma does almost make a point.

In Israel only Orthodox Rabbis are allowed to perform marriages between Jews. Obviously this has no bearing on Christians or Muslims who can marry within their own traditions. It is nonsense to suggest that they can’t marry in Israel.

Nevertheless, this offends my democratic sense because it makes life difficult for Jews who don’t want religious marriage, or who wish to marry non Jews.
