Maybe we’re getting wires crossed? Do you think criticism of Trump’s handling of coronavirus is unwarranted?
I said I have no idea how to solve the virus. And my criticisms shouldn’t be dismissed that simply as they are shared by many people. Including people on here like Aragorn who are normally right leaning that think he has mishandled this extraordinarily.
When I think about everyone I know who is anti-mask, it seems OBVIOUS that they would have worn them diligently if only we had Hillary in office saying “wear a mask”.
But you just conceded above that he is counterprogramming his own experts and reducing the efficacy of the very things we could do to self-help till a vaccine arrives - mainly masks. What good is a plan (limited as it is) if you deliberately undermine it because of politics?
My money’s still on Biden. He didn’t do anything close to the “basket of deplorables” thing last election and Trump’s campaign has been using the wrong mud slinging tactics throughout. I don’t think the emails thing will affect swing voters much because Trump has an even worse (reported) record.
The thing is I truly believe Trump had a chance to change the way those supporters viewed this. I think we absolutely always will have people who think crazy things. But he has enormous influence as the President and enormous influence over a large group of people. And he’s largely failed at every step of the way in how he has communicated.
I absolutely don’t think all these people would have acted this stupid. Trumps words and actions matter. He had the chance to get the nation to take this seriously, he had the chance to listen to the people who needed listened. He had a chance to talk about a common enemy, correct incorrect information.
He’s failed at every step of the way when talking about the virus. And mostly failed at getting the people who almost worship him to listen to doctors. Shame on them for being stupid sure…but shame on Trump for being stupid as well.
This is key. Trumpkins talk a big game about being hard-nosed individualists, but they’re not - they’re followers. They await information and commands and follow. Birx and Fauci never stood a chance unless Trump said “do what they say, they’re the experts on this stuff”. He didn’t, and now - well, here we are.
I would agree but I think it would have been huge. We all agree Trump has a fan base that soaks up what he says. How would they have responded if Trump had hit the political layup of take this seriously and listen to doctors and scientists.
Would some have still have been idiots? Of course. But it would have swayed a lot. It just didn’t help that the person many idiots listen to also happened to be an idiot on this.
This is where I believe those behavior logarithms would be handy, because there are plenty of Republicans, conservatives, middle of the roaders, what ever–who did and continue to do the right thing.
But then there are the “If you believe masks are oppressive, then also X, Y, Z,”. With XYZ being mistrust authority, believe in conspiracy, etc.
