US Presidential Election Predictions

What I believe is different than showing cause. Can you show that left wing media is responsible for people thinking the police are racist?

We are talking about the media here. I don’t see how the left media caused this.

The left wing media made them do it?

I don’t know, do you? Does anyone?

Additionally, I have already said both the left and right wing media are guilty of fact free narratives. You have said the left is far more guilty, and that their narratives cause far more harm. You haven’t supported either of those claims with anything reasonable. Now you are trying to shift to the latter (that the left wings narratives cause more harm). You can’t show that either. So you deflect with questions. Just show your claims to be true.

:raised_hand: Oh! Oh! Pick me! I know, I know! It was exactly: zero

I’m just pointing out he’s doing exactly what you say is unhelpful. And at an unbelievable frequency.

I’m pretty sure partisan politics will be the death of America. Every aspect of our society has been divided into red vs blue, and it has been getting worse since social media came to prominence. Algorithms are making sure your dopamine receptors are bombarded with opinions that match your own, so that you believe you’re in the right. News is horrendously slanted on both sides - so much so that when I watch documentaries on nazi germany and the ussr (not capitalizing, they don’t deserve it) the parallels to their propaganda are chilling. We’re being told to hate the “other side” and that that hate has to take priority over morals, decency, and logic. We’re not totally to the point of a hitler vs stalin (not capitalizing their names, they don’t deserve that) election, but I would call this one a Mussolini vs Trotsky election. And no matter what, We, the People, lose.

Why do you think so many people believe that COVID precautions are a fallacy, and that masks requirements somehow go against constitutional rights?

Why do you think so many people think climate change is a hoax?

How would you like to be an underrepresented student getting death threats and “go back home” comments on Twitter?

How would you like to feel the need to protest to bring about racial equality?

What percentage of narratives that have been suddenly thrust by Guiliani, Trump, etc… about Joe Biden’s corruption while in office are even remotely true?

Do you believe it is helpful to convince millions of Americans to believe things that aren’t true? Trump’s flaws, lies, and bad rhetoric are so bad that unprecedented embellishments and outright lies require years and years of righting the ship.

I will grant you Trump says stupid things all day long.
But you are the scientist here. Would you attribute his words to this increase of peer countries all battling a pandemic?

Last 3 months

Because a lot of people choose to think for themselves and not arbitrarily believe what others tell them to.
I’m not saying Covid is a hoax by any means, I have a friend who just got out of the hospital due to Covid, but is a virus with a 99+ percent survivability rate a pandemic? And if so, why haven’t we panicked over other viruses in the past like this? Why don’t we lock down and wear masks every flu season? Have you ever gone to work with a cold or flu? I bet you have. We’re you endangering the lives of others by doing so?
We’re told to believe science, but the recommendations of WHO, CDC, Fauci etc have flip flopped back and forth.

Same reason as above. Believe it or not, not ALL scientists believe climate change is our fault. It’s not a cut and dry issue.

Again, not saying I don’t believe climate change is a thing, I just think it’s complicated.

Name a single time the flu has overwhelmed health care and hospital resources the way COVID has. I’ll wait.

While I’m waiting, I’ll go ahead and answer the question - because the flu is far less dangerous. COVID is now the third highest cause of death I, 2020.

Has it? Hospital ships sat empty. Field hospital in central park mostly empty. Hospitals near me wide open. Plenty of videos of clinics claiming they were overwhelmed and citizen journalists showing up to empty clinics. Nurses making dance videos. Etc etc etc. And I assume were not counting msm “news” stories of chaotic ER’s while showing a picture of an Italian hospital.

Hospitals don’t get overwhelmed with flu patients because the only people going to the ER with the flu are elderly, or immune compromised, or otherwise at risk due to other illnesses. Sound familiar?
Tens of thousands of people die of influenza every year. We’ve never reacted this way before.
It’s a pandemic because they told us it’s a pandemic. And you’re fine doing what your overlords tell you to. Not everyone is as easily cowed as you.

And btw, 10 months in to this pandemic and I just now know someone who got Covid. And I live in a metropolitan area, not in the sticks.

To be fair, you only know 3 people, and 2 of them are cats.

Not true. I have 807,683,934,878,364 close friends on Facebook.

Except I don’t have Facebook.

And I don’t know any cats.

This is the weirdest consistent anecdote that I’ve seen a bunch from right wing people. I’m not sure what people expect from this. It’s been a long time since I’ve seen a little person. I’m not questioning their existence.

“I’m not saying Covid ain’t real everyone but I don’t know anyone who has it!!”

I feel like the Covid debates have been done in the Covid related threads but people still rolling out the whole just like the flu stuff at this point is insane. It’s like they heard someone say that early on so they figured it must be true. Wonder how many deaths it would take for them to scratch their head and think maybe this is a bit different.

I would not at all. I don’t think anyone thinks Covid exists because of Trump or that if Trump wasn’t President we wouldn’t have cases or something.

I just think he’s failed in a way that would be almost impossible to do at this. He couldn’t even do the basic stuff like “we’re in this together” which is a political layup. Instead it’s been (of course) someone else’s fault and peddling conspiracy theories while bashing Americans (not sure if he considers people who live in Blue states Americans though) and scientists. And in the midst of all this we have a President who is frustrated we test. Not because he wants prevention or to save people. Because testing might make his response look bad.

But you could reasonably assume the world is not being overrun by little people.

Correct. Is it an all or nothing situation? Either it’s a world wide pandemic or it doesn’t exist? Or maybe, it does exist, but it’s not a modern day black plague. For someone who thinks right wingers just follow Trump in lock step you sure follow the left’s narrative without question.

There lies the problem. Which death count should we follow? The one where every death was counted as covid regardless of the actual cause of death? The CDC has changed this number a few times, so what numbers do we believe?

I was pointing out that it’s the exclusive response of people who either think it’s a hoax, no big deal, or something along that vein. Common on here and incredibly bizarre. Who even has this I don’t know anyone?!

Of what? Covid existing? Infecting millions in the US? Killing 235,000? That’s the narrative? I didn’t know it was one.

Like I said this has been beat up to death in the Covid thread and I would suggest we take the discussion there or just agree to disagree.

But the oddest thing is that whether or not you think something is off or it’s less than is being reported. The President in the midst of (if you don’t want to say pandemic fine) of this is attacking doctors and scientists.

I think if you had told someone you had an idea for a comedy where a President would attack the medical and scientific community during something like this consistently they would say you’re on to something.

Fox News is so biased, totally in Trump’s corner:

Covid is by no means a modern day black plague. But, and this is key, a “pandemic” is by definition an outbreak of a relatively new virus that affects multiple continents. (Or at least, “new to massive spread” virus. Which is why Ebola would be considered a pandemic if it spread but the flu - the seasonal flu - would not). So yes, it is a pandemic.

I don’t think that any virus that has caused millions of deaths is something to ignore. That said, I also don’t think it’s something we can lock down any more. That time has long passed.

The point H was making is that it is extremely hard to argue that Trump hasn’t botched the response. Realistically nobody has the secret code to perfect covid response.

But Trump missed easy layups and fucked it up so badly that the New England Journal of Medicine - essentially the “Time Magazine” of medical scientific journals - published a unanimously signed oped that he should be voted out. For the first time in its 100+ year history. They do not win points for being political…in fact they may very well risk points for going there. But they did. This is an unprecedented move in hard science research journals. The Lancet published an unsigned oped in May that argued much the same.

Scientific American has never - in its almost 200 year publication history - endorsed a political candidate. Until this year when they endorsed Biden (who is without question a lackluster persona).
