Hope & change.
Exactly.
It speaks to everything the listener wants, and simultaneously to everything they think is wrong,
Maybe that’s who the real “kingmakers” are, the advertisement/sloganeers.
Build Back Better actually kinda sucked, in my opinion.
I prefer wait and hope.
I agree it could be used by team blue just as easy. Maybe even more. More that it became the cheering slogan for the group that had for so long said America is a great country, love it or leave it, etc.
The context to me is that current America isn’t great. Which flies in the face of the flag waving greatest country on earth types which I would have long thought were typically GOP people.
But it works on numerous levels. But to take it at face value you must say America isn’t great. Just always seemed odd to me.
You’ll see.
Yeah it never really took on at all. Don’t know how much they put into it. All they really needed was “I won’t act like him.”
Yeah, I can see why people would interpret it like that.
Im of the mind that it’s same shit/different day, but a lot of whom you speak of are in that duality of existence mindset.
Or “It’s the greatest nation on earth, even with those [commie pinko whatever they are today’s] trying to ruin it!”.
How’s that wall coming?
I think the US always needs an external enemy to focus on, otherwise all the anger will be channeled internally and the society will disintegrate. WW1, WW2, the Cold War and 9/11 all united the people and gave them a clear goal and focus: stop the Huns/commies/terrorists, defend US values and protect the west. This creates a sense of purpose and people temporarily abandon their differences to band together.
But now what? Go to work, watch TV and go to sleep? I think a lot of people are fundamentally lacking a sense of purpose and so they’ll stoke divisions within their own country just to get involved in something. It could be “owning the libs” online, or it could be beating each other up in the streets. The commies and Nazis are gone, so now those labels have to be applied to other groups so that the “us vs them” narrative can continue.
This is gonna sound cynical, but here goes–I’m convinced that the media (all members) won’t be happy and won’t quit capitalizing on fear and resentment until we have real, mass bloodshed in the streets.
Then they will be Elated!
They will keep pushing whatever narrative generates the most clicks and views. For the last 4 years, “Cheeto Hitler and his army of white supremacists” has worked well. But if there was a serious war or an event like 9/11, they would’ve dropped that quickly - no one is going to read about how many scoops of ice cream Trump has when there’s an attack happening on the country as a whole.
The MSM are opportunistic scavengers who profit from sensationalism. What’s scary is that everyone is seemingly aware of this and yet repeatedly fall for their shit regardless.
For most of the rational people yes, the movie comes to an end. But it’s NOT irrelevant what Trump and his team say to the media, because it perpetuates and worsens the disinformation bubble, or the grand fiction that leads to distrust of our institutions. It makes it harder to come back from, and this is just one reason I won’t forgive him.
There’s some merit to this I think, but I’m not sure how much is due to this vs other factors that developed during the ensuring 75 years after WW2
You mean the wall that Mexico is paying for? Lmao!
I’d say we can leave out the MSM here. If you go to far right or far left websites it’s the exact same thing. Clicks equal money and to generate clicks you need hot “takes” and enticing headlines.
Hell you can see that on sports websites and everything else. We have access to more media and thoughts than ever but everyone is competing for our attention.
Sensationalism “sells” and it isn’t going anywhere ever. What’s more alarming to me than that is how people don’t question the information they are consuming. I think that’s the true evil here.
It’s so obviously easy to call out bullshit in seconds but more people than ever believe it. You can see that in terms of the ever changing nature of the election. It’s just bounced from conspiracy theory to conspiracy theory to conspiracy theory. One gets shot down and 8 more pop up in that time. It’s like wack a mole. When people want something to be true and someone will “sell” it to them
My wife’s sister boyfriend is far right. Not like super duper loon but out there on some stuff. All he posts and shares on Facebook is articles about the stolen election. Correcting it is a waste of time. If you want to believe you will. No amount of fact checking whatever will get through.
Are you serving real food, or do we have to pretend to gorge ourselves?
Nowadays it’s easy to find echo chamber communities online and shape your whole worldview from information shared in those groups. For example, I have an interest in guns (which makes for a hard life as I live in Australia) so I’ve been lurking on a bunch of US gun forums for years. They are extraordinarily insulated and one-sided. Yet one could quite easily only go on those forums and websites while ignoring other media and news sources and only associating with people that share similar views. I find this kind of isolation really warps your perspective over time unless you actively balance it out, which a lot of people choose not to do.
Over 500 miles so far. He’ll be able to finish it over the next 4 years.
As many Big Mac’s as you can shovel in your face hole.
Neither will I forgive him, @Aragorn…and neither will History.
It’s worth pointing out that on more than one occasion; on this very Forum; someone would cynically reply with the one word " Source?"…or something along the lines “How exactly?” when someone pointed out that Trump was eroding the very foundations of our Fragile Republic.
If someone doesn’t see how he did it, and continues to do it…they never will.
Absolutely.
