Heh this has been on-going in my workplace now for the last 3 days.
If anyone works for Google PM me join the mass mail !
Amount of abuse being leveled by people in my work is insane there’s no “Grey” either Black or White or in this case 1 or 9.
I have seen 3 really really good replies, so Kudo’s to you 3. Rest Math is more of an explain where you got it and why rather than IT’S THIS NOW F*CK OFF.
Distributive and other non-sequitors aside, I think a large part of the problem here is that one does not normally see the following two things together in the same context:
division indicated by something other than a horizontal fraction bar
multiplication indicated by juxtaposition
Whether or not multiplication indicated by juxtaposition has a higher precedence than division can only be relevant if #1 and #2 above occur together, and might rarely if ever be discussed in mathematics textbooks or mathematics courses if #1 and #2 above do not occur together outside discussions of this specific issue.
Can anyone point out any context where he or she has seen #1 and #2 above together: other than these recent threads, and articles that specifically address the question of precedence for these two things? Even an academic context, as long as it is not solely for the purpose of discussing or testing knowledge of their relative precedence (e.g. both #1 and #2 above in the same expression in a math textbook, but not solely for the sake of discussing or testing knowledge of their relative precedence)?

Err, not a mathematician, but I do have a BS in mathematics by the skin of my teeth.
I’m with number10 in that I’d evaluate AB/CD as (AB)/(CD), but I parse the original equation as 6/2*(1+2) and thus perceive in my application a rule that says that proximity multiplication takes precedence only when a variable is involved otherwise it’s just a convenient way to write things and so I would evaluate that to be 9, not 1. Likewise, I’d evaluate 6/2Y as 6/(2*Y) as opposed to (6/2)*Y.
Just another random opinion on the interwebz.[/quote]
Could you please state your alma mater so that I can make sure my kids don’t apply there?

I’m shocked that people actually think that this is open to discussion.
