Tempting proposition, but I think I’ll pass ![]()
Mid range, shortened and lengthened biceps! Excellent curl selection.
Curls are awesome. You have to contract your biceps rather than your elbows though.
The vindication from the last few posts actually gave me a biceps pump.
So is that like a “Contact high” but for a pump? A Contact Pump…?
What do you mean by that? Is it possible to contract the elbows without contracting the biceps? Are you just saying very little biceps activation by using cheat curls or something?
FWIW, I am back to doing arms at the end of my sessions. I did like 6 sets of bicep burn out sets yesterday. I want some guns at some point.
I am saying, instead of focusing on moving the weight from A to B, movement should be accomplished by flexing and contracting the bicep.
This is the same reason skullcrushers hurt peoples elbows: they’re relying on the elbow to complete the movement, rather than contracting the triceps to do it.
Or like the dudes that are doing 60lb lateral raises, when all they need are some 15s or 20s.
This was probably the most humbling and beneficial thing I’ve learned over the years.
This is one of those things I “like” about “training behind the 8-ball”: I stopped worrying about how much weight was on the bar and focused PURELY on how much effort I was applying to it. There was nothing worse than gearing up for a BIG deadlift day, planning my whole day around it, timing my nutrition, getting all my rituals in place…and then totally whiffing it. I’d be in my head for DAYS. Now, I roll up at 0400 on a slice of keto toast with some sunbutter with 5 hours of sleep incredibly overtaxed and just pull until I blow out the bloodvessels in my face. How much was on the bar? Who cares.
Yea I hear ya, you have to Jerry rig up a comfortable shoulder strap on your vest/backpack and add padding after a while
Underrated
Standing Overhead Press Sure it’s not around these parts and is one of the “Big 4” but I rarely see anyone doing them, most opting to sit down. In my current gym there’s only 2-3 of us. People always have some excuse for not doing them. The stability over your entire body carries over to so much other stuff and if my bench ever struggles, adding a few kg to my overhead press will always get it going again.
Push-ups - I see so many people doing so much chest volume yet still avoiding push-ups. Even those people who are afraid of dips that end up doing a fly variation every single workout. Push-ups are an excellent accessory that has so many other benefits.
Trap Bar as a whole - I’m not gonna delve into this too much. People think it’s cheating, people think it’s for old people, people don’t understand, people don’t utilize it enough.
Overrated
Isolation work (too much) - I see you guys have already been through a lot of this. Every exercise has a purpose if utilized correctly, I just see too many guys having things like 2 arm days a week or it taking up half of their workouts. A million bicep sets and can’t even do a chin-up. That or a bunch of lat raise variations but never lift anything overhead.
Hitting chest from a ton of different angles - Careful, i’m not saying any of these variations are bad. People just obsess over the wrong things too much, i want my chest to do this, i want that shelf at the bottom, i need more mid chest. Most of this stuff can be down to genetics, most of these guys would do better to focus on getting their horizontal press strength up and stop focusing on 5 different movements at the same time.
That’s my onlyfans. I’ll DM you
I think most people consider it good content, people just moan that he wants to redirect everyone to his Patreon if you ask him a question. Mans gotta make a living though.
Steve Shaws a good one that’s underrated too, lots of free content but does a bit of self-promotion just like Wenning does. I think the way he presents himself doesn’t appeal to the masses which is cool (although he still has some clickbaity stuff). He does a live Q&A every Friday that’s pretty inactive so can get a few good questions in - he’s great with his audience.
Getting a coach is certainly underrated! I’m a coach myself and I have my own coach helping me build up my deadlift.
Regarding the LISS, I’m personally not a fan as I’ve always favored a more short and intense style of cardio. But like you said, LISS is great if you have the time in your schedule and your only goal is to be lean and muscular. I know lots of lean/jacked dudes that don’t do cardio really at all, they only do LISS or go on long walks. So it certainly has it’s place
I like Bench press personally. But I agree it’s certainly overrated if your goal is hypertrophy. If you’re playing american football I think it makes sense or obviously is you’re a powerlifter. I’m way more impressed by a strong overhead press or a muscle up when it regards to upper body strength. I am biased though for sure.
I absolutely love this list. However I will say that for total beginners, the sit-up has it’s place…think about what you do every time you wake up and get out of bed…you literally have to “sit-up” first.
But personally I never do sit-ups and rarely have my experienced clients do them either.
High rep heavy back squats are definitely one of my all-time favorites
I love this comment even though I have a different perspective. Consistently doing the little things right certainly adds up to big things over time.
Regarding isolation moves, if I had to choose one or the other, I would say they are overrated, I’ve always prioritized the basic lifts and the stronger I got at them, the bigger/more muscular I have become. So when someone asks me how to get bigger arms, my usual answer to them is to get better at strict pull-ups and bring up your dips/overhead press and 9/10 they will get bigger arms/shoulders.
I definitely agree mobility/flexbility work is overrated though. I honestly never stretch or mobilize…When I see people laying on the gym floor humping a foam roller scrolling on instagram those are the same people that are weak/mediocre lifters at best.
Regarding progress/process I agree with you. You must enjoy the process to progress the most. If you don’t enjoy the process, your progress will certainly be shortlived
I’m 99% confident I’ve done as many or more burpees than you and I will respectfully disagree. Far better ways to do conditioning if you have access to a assault runner, assault bike, or concept 2 rower
I agree sit ups have their place - but they are “over rated”. Every one in every “Globogym” is doing 13 different styles of sit up.
In fact all of my “over rated” has its place. It is just a smaller than you might expect.
Obviously the only way to settle this is burpees at dawn
