So I posted awhile ago about ultram and just wanted to tell a little about what happened to my life after almost a year abusing it. I know theres a lot of people out there who take it because its cheap, it works, and its easy to get. Unfortunately it can be nearly impossible to stop, the withdrawals are equal to those of heroin/vicodin… I started taking them for soreness and as a sleep aid. It quickly spiraled into a full blown addiction.
I was taking between 30-40 50mg tablets a day. Drs were amazed i hadnt had a seizure. I know people also use this drug as an anti depressant… it definitely makes you feel good but the doses need to be increased often for it to stay effective. Anyway… so I was sleeping for 16 hours straight, I stopped working out b/c i would get violently sick if i excercised… i couldnt nut if my life depended on it. it took me 5 minutes to take a piss. i lost 40 pounds within 6 weeks…it was a very ugly time.
i tried to stop more than once but the withdrawals were torturous and i was ahsamed i couldnt do it on my own. i finally decided enough was enough and went for help. it took awhile to get the ball rolling but once i knew there was help i knew my life was finally going to change for the better. after 48 hours without ultram i was going thru pretty extreme withdrawals and my dr gave me a drug called suboxone. within 15 minutes releif was there. it was truly amazing.
i was sweating, aching everywhere, extreme anxiety, i couldnt stop moving and then after letting the tablets dissolve under my tongue it was almost total releif. this rambling story has a point… if you are abusing this shit, or if youre using opiates more and more often dont let it get out of control. and if youre already out of control get help. i never imagined detox could be his painless. the hard part is coming up though, and thats staying clean and staying in therapy. so if any of this sounds familiar get help. thanks for reading
I took 8 tablets Ultram ER (The one a day pill) all 8 in a gap of two hours- I even took 4 tablets 6 hours before that - Why cause I was young and stupid.
Result: gran mal seizure
and not being able to drive for 6 months, which made me lose my driving job. I’d never done any drugs or drank before this, and haven’t done any since.

Me neither. It didn’t do anything for me except make me tired as hell. I can’t see the possibility for addiction considering there’s no positive attributes. No buzz or high like opiates, no real pain relief. IMHO, ultram sucks.
I knew a doctor that got addicted to ultram. He was an alcoholic who noticed he felt something from it. He got addicted and later started drinking again.
That’s a great thing that you made the right decision and got the right help that worked.
What others mention above is a good example, when compared with your experience and what Hagar mentions, of how medical claims in some instances that given painkillers are supposedly non-addictive or low-addictive are not necessarily correct for a given individual. When used there should always be serious concern, even with the ones that are claimed to be non-addicting or of low addiction potential, that they may have serious addiction potential for the individual person.
It can even vary with one individual over time, a drug not being addictive and the person thinking “I don’t even like this, I can’t imagine how anyone could become addicted to it,” and then at a later date, if the supply becomes no issue the drug does become addictive. This has happened to more than one person with Ultram; another painkiller medically claimed not to be addictive, Nubain, is another that many bodybuilders have found quite addictive.
One of the really bad pieces of advice on breaking addictions was using Ultram to break Nubain addiction, which actually used to be advocated in bb’ing. This usually just resulted in Ultram addiction. I am very glad you found and completed sound treatment.
I used to work out with a guy who was addicted to Nubain, but instead of using utram to get off of it, he used heroine. He went to treatment and got clean (except for gear). Hopefully he’s still doing well.
Good for you for stepping up, yourself, and seeking help. Ultram is just as addicting as any opiate out there. It is a synthetic that binds to the same receptors as heroin, hydrocodone, morphine, and any of their derivatives. Created and prescribed to take the place of real narcotics for mild to moderate pain, there has been an unexpected backlash. People are being admitted frequently lately for Ultram abuse.
Don’t let this drug confuse you, people. It gives the same “high” as Vicodin, though it is not equivalent. It is cheap, and it is abundant, AND it can cause just as many problems as the real opiates can.
Poacher, good luck with treatment. You’ve done great just admitting your problem and seeking help. Don’t give up. As long as you keep an open mind in therapy and remember any day you don’t use is a good day. Don’t let the ism talk you back into its arms. You how painful it was being on the drug, you now have isolated it, and are putting it in the past. Do not entertain thoughts that interfere with staying clean. Take it day to day.

A friend did the same thing, started with Nubain…then coke, heroin, oxycontin,… did the rehab thing two or three times. Struggles every day to stay clean…very sad.
if one is having trouble with tramadol or opiates in general:
1.) there are 4 opioid receptors
mu - morphine type hence the mu, nubain actually inhibits mu…mu abusers get withdrawal from nubain…tramadol hits mu but not as well as the classics and tramadol also has a lesser concentrated metabolite that hits it pretty well but not as well as percocet or some stronger classic mu agonists because its lower concentration I would think
delta - tramadol has an enantiomer that hits this, makes it not have cross tolerance completely with percocet and classic mu agonists
kappa - nubain hits and this makes nubain not have crosss tolerance with the above completely either
ORL - buprenorphine or ‘subutex’ hits this (suboxone is subutex mixed with naltrexone…naltrexone is a opiate recptor blocker to calm down the subutex effect and make it less abusable too)
subutex also lights up mu partially while blocking out others from the mu receptor and even blocking out the overdose mu receptor blockers so if you do take enough subutex to overdose mu its almost an irreversible overdose and very deadly possible…I also think subutex also hits the delta…

Every time I hear about Ultram, I cringe.

Retailboy - is that you in your avatar?? shit man… you look massive… i never imagined you to be so big!
OP - i congratulate you on your successful withdrawal from Tramadol.
Tramadol does NOT have equal withdrawal symptoms to shooting dope my friend… And where i am from, one year of use would not be considered enough time to have much of an addiction to anything other than an IV preparation of an opioid… But this isnt the place…
However do i need to be the one to remind you that this isnt really the place? Considering i am likely to be one of the worst drug users to come here regularly, isnt that a little ironic?
There are many of us who could start a thread about our drug problems… but there are different sites for such writing.
I am not trying to be a cunt - and i know how hard this shit is, and i am genuinely glad you have done well recently.
Just keep it up - from the little you have written, it sounds like you dont have a whole lifestyle that will make it impossible to stop too - so that will help.
BUT i personally dont come to this site to read about peoples addictions to anything other than AAS - i have enough of that IRL thanks. The only other times it has been brought up is when one of us has been directly asked to.
Again this isnt just a flame for flames sake, but i dont think this is the place is it? One thread MAY be accepted but two or more?
And i know if i dont like it i should just not open the thread, but while iot is for a good cause - there is absolutely zero connection to AAS or fitness here… and i must protest.
And i will repeat, well done fella. Lets leave the shit alone now huh?
I think he would get better advice here being that its less brainwashed people than at a addiction site…
at those sites people just regurgitate what help groups pounded into their minds…
99% of it is false that those people say…
it is especially wrong when they say that it has to be painful…
for tramadol this is not true…
PERCOCET and TRAMADOL switched back and forth every two weeks allows tapering of either without pain…
no PAIN…
however I need to tell people a warning: nubain though has some problems as it causes withdrawal worse in mu agonist abusers (someone addicted to morphine would get sick from nubain because nubain blocks mu)…so you must pick your counter cycle wisely depending on what the other drug is…
