Just finished watching the first episode of this on Spike TV. Kicked ass. I have been up shadow boxing and grappling my girlfriend for the past 15 minutes; I had to switch to something more constructive.
What did every body think of the show?
My boy Forrest is a bad ass who is not one to be fucked with in the cage.
I think it is an excellent show for a very select audience. Because of the “selectness,” it won’t survive very long. I had the privilege of meeting and training with Randy Coture over a weekend when he was brought in for a seminar at the gym I used to train at in Houston. He is softspoken, insightful, and very, very smart…the kind of person that fails in television. I will watch the show religiously because I understand the truth of what is being shown, a shame those who make up the Nielse ratings don’t and wont.
I watched it too and was loving it. When Spike showed the documentary of the smashing machine a kid I knew who watched it had no idea there were different fighting styles and he couldn’t see how freestyle wrestling is so power. I tried to explain but all he can think is punching and seeing people fly in the movies. I’d double leg his ass onto concrete and tie his ass up in a few holds to show him how good wrestling is but whatever.
I hope the show doesn’t bomb and appeals to the WWE fans for them to see some seriously great grappling and striking and how MMA is not two guys just beating the crap out of each other but an art and a game of tactics and mind blowing technique.
Show was pretty good. Set up seems like most other reality shows, the producers focusing on a couple of the folks to get some drama and story line going. Would have liked to see more of the one on one sparring and less about the drunk from the first night.
The way they showed the training and what the guys are going to go through was excellent. Hell of a workout they were getting.
I agree that Spike is betting on the WWE crowd staying around to watch it after RAW. They’ll probably reshow it once or twice throughout the week, like their other shows, to keep interest up and grab a larger audience.
As far as synopsis: 2 teams, each composed fo 4 light heavies and 4 middleweights, coached by chuck lidell and randy couture. People getting the most focus seem to be Jason(? was that his name?) a candian who is having second thoughts literally from day 1, Chris Leben, an obnoxious asshole who gets TRASHED the first night and pees on the canadian’s bed, but then actualy does really well in the next day’s training, and Diego Sanchez, a guy who got a stitch in the chin already, says all the right things, seems like your prototypical hero: wants to work hard, believes in himself, doesnt get wrecked with leben the first night, etc etc. The training seems absolutely brutal. These are some tough guys. Did I miss anything?

Not really, it seems pretty accurate to me.
Everybody who can needs to check out this show, though.
Unfortunatley for me, I caught only the last 5 minutes of it, but from what I can tell, when they train, they only showed bits of pieces of their excercises.
Did either Chuck or Randy givem the game-play in front of the camera like “today were gonna do plyometrics, 300 pushups, etc…” cause that would be awesome too, to see what thier training is like, and not just the social aspect. I caught some of team Couture doing plyometrics, but that was it. Though this may be the only reality show I may ever watch, I can say I only really care to get some imput to see how they train and what their excercises consist of.
Team Liddell, which is basically team Quest, has been known to incorperate the most unconventional excercizes in their training and im curious if they’re ever going to light up on that. Team Couture has an excellent dietitian, so maybe we’ll get some leaked info on that too. Last time I checked, Randy was on some kind of Alkyline diet, seems kind of strange but he’s proof it works. Though, I also hear that diet’s success depends on your blood type.
Did any of this happen yet or maybe in the next episodes?
Actually Randy picked his Team Quest guys (Quarry and Leben) with his first two picks. Surprised Forrest didn’t get picked sooner. How did you like his arm? He broke it during his last fight in Brazil from a punch by a dude nicknamed The Wall, and went on to KO him with his other hand.

As am I surprised. To date, he is the only guy who has ever pulled off a flying triangle on me (and he is a big guy!).
I remember talking to him and seeing that thing up close. It was kinda nasty and deformed. I guess its a little better now.
Both Randy and Chuck deserve a ton of exposure…both guys(particularly Randy) have so much to teach pro athletes about how to act and how to behave as men. They could destroy any of these shit-talking basketball or football clowns, but you would never know it by talking to them.
The reality show concept absolutely sucks, but I guess you dont reach a mass audience any other way.
Leben is a complete tool and a disgrace, I don’t care if he is mugging or not. Bad for the sport and very much reinforces stereotypes. What is worse is that he is a very legit tough guy. Hopefully, Sanchez will shut his mouth.
The rest of the guys seem to be very good examples and the light heavyweight group is very tough to pick a winner.
Jury is out on the show for me at this point but of course I’ll keep watching.
I wasn’t at all impressed with the little I saw of their hands(granted it wasn’t all of them). I think the majority of them are probably good wrestlers/grapplers though, so it should make for some interesting match ups. I agree, the Leben guy isn’t good for the sport, but the producers put him there to antagonize. Just like the nice ‘pacifist’ guy and the bumbling country boy from Canada( I am from Canada and its annoying-there are way better fighters here than that guy, and yes we have modern cities. But I guess we are the ‘weaker’ neighbour). So overall its pretty good to watch if just to check out the training. And to see the Leben guy get pummeled. Which he will, TV demands it.
I generally despise reality TV, but I caught this just as it was starting and decided to give it a few minutes. Ended up watching the whole damn thing. I don’t have much experience with MMA, so it was kick ass to see some of the training that goes into living that life. The upcoming scenes, however, seriously let me down. Looks like they’re going to turn this into some Survivor-type competition bullshit that has absolutley nothing to do with fighting. I could be (and seriously hope) I’m wrong, but that’s the impression I got. I would love to get into this stuff more, so maybe towards the end they’ll come back to the sparring and training.
P.S. Is UFC that good for MMA competition anymore? My understanding was that it had become somewhat watered down. That Tito and Belfort match looks like it could be pretty intense, though.
Did anybody watch last night? The 2 little competitions they had were lame. But it sounds like the fights will be determining who goes home from here on out, so the show will get better.
What’s up with that dude dressing and acting like a queer around the house?
I sincerely hope that somebody shuts Leben’s big fat yapper. That guy is a world-class dickhead.
The comps were lame. The fighting should start monday.
Well it seems that alcohol gets the best of some.
Besides being a “mouth” and a rule breaker, I cant judge his fighting determination yet. He is a loose cannon right now. Either he will continue to be this way and get away with it or someone will put him in his place. We shall see.
“I sincerely hope that somebody shuts Leben’s big fat yapper. That guy is a world-class dickhead.”
Yeah him pissing on that guy’s bed in the first episode was one of the biggest dick moves I’ve ever seen in my life (and having lived in a fraternity house a few years back, I saw some pretty bad ones). I know the guy he did it too is by far the worst fighter there, but there was no need for that.
