U2 One of the Greatest Rock Bands?

It took a while but some one finally mentioned The Who!

U2 is a great band. They had a couple lousy albums but overall they are fantastic. I would love to see them live.

I am seeing the Stones in October.

And don’t let go.

Bono just annoys me anymore with all of his political BS which is probably one reason why all of their new stuff annoys me. I recently read a quote on U2 from Henry Rollins. I thought it was kind of funny. Im not knocking your band here Elk, Like I said it is just personal preference. I have heard they put on a great show and they obviously have some serious longevity.

Henry Rollins on…

The chameleons of pop, U2:

“Here’s a band who cannot go out and play their early songs with a straight face. They can’t go out and play ‘Sunday Bloody Sunday,’ because that was a different pose. That was when bubble-butt had the big white flag…Now shithead is wearing a gold lam? suit, slicked-back hair and mirror shades, and he’s coming at you from K-Mart… They are the Pat Boone, they are the Death Star, they are the death of music.”

trailtrash, we are on the same page on this one bro.

…i cant say that much about myself and Henry Rollins. Death Star? dramatic…

I’m a big U2 fan, but then again, I’m a big fan of more bands than I probably should be. They would not be on my Top 5 list of bands, but they would be at top of the quasi-pop category. Their sound is fairly unique, so I don’t really know in what genre it should be placed. Maybe that is because their stuff keeps changing, yet it still remains unique.

War → The Joshua Tree → Achtung Baby → Pop → How to Dismantle… They all sound so different, but they still have a style that deviates from any other band. Anyhow, I like 'em, but that is very subjective. Greatest ever? Don’t know; there is a lot of competition out there.

And Sonny S, never speak that way of The Clash in my presence! Haha.

Everybody now…

If you cling to tightly, you’re gonna lose control…

Elk - I’m feel like putting on a pair of sandals and singing around a campfire.

I hate U2. They ceased to be a ‘rock’ band long ago. Most overrated, overplayed band on the radio IMO.

Sing it brotha… I’ve got the patchuli (sp?) oil and Kumbaya is next on the set list. Hell we’ll throw some Cash in the mix as well. Ring of fire is a calling!

at one time i had every U2 sound on every U2 song on every U2 cd memorized.

those days are now over.

Ten-four. Top 100 maybe. Although I like their music and have several discs, they aren’t one of the greats. And, if you stand for the American way of life, you have got to hate Boner and his politics.

Someone mentioned ColdPlay … now those guys f*cking OWN … new album out in a couple of weeks.

Now that is what I like to see. We have some Cash fans around here! I actually seen a local band in my area this past weekend and they pulled off Ring of Fire like you wouldn’t believe. They also did Folsom Prison in another set which was kick ass.

This can’t happen without some decent beer though.

You suppose if you drink Power Drive first you can drink more beer?

Joe, we’ll consider it a cheat day. I think I’m gonna get my Cash greatest hits cd outta the truck and throw it in.

Speaking a Cash he did a song with U2 on the Zooropa disk. His version of Hurt by NIN also kicked ass… great video showing his life as well.

Trailrash, love your avatar.

Most importantly there Irish, and there one of the things that makes me proud to be irish - James Joyce, Heaney, Wilde and U2 - all the things that make me proud to be irish.

Yeah…that vid for Hurt teared me up the first time I saw it, and it still can if I’m not careful.
At the end, when he was folding the piano lid back and patting it while it looked like a coffin lid–Greatest Video Ever Made.
Best part about JRC was that he didn’t care who or what you were–I try it, but forget sometimes.
Sorry for helping you guys hijack your thread, Elk

They’re badass! Been a fan since 90’! Saw them in Miami back in 2001 & they rocked hard, ears rang for 4 days! The Edge’s gutiar riffs are amazing & Larry Mullen Jr. is very underrated!

Listen to New Year’s Day, Sunday Bloody Sunday, the entire Rattle and Hum DVD…How on earth can that be considered “pop”? No way. How can playing with BB king be pop?..They rock, kick ass and they actually have something to say in their lyrics…which pop bands usually don’t. Pop isn’t political…and U2 is which is great. I can’t stand music that doesn’t stand for anything.

Now don’t get me wrong…they went pop in the 90’s…Bono even admitted that and said that the decade of the 90’s was an experiment in pop and electronics. I saw then in Denver also and it was amazing. Bono took a sold out crowd and still made everyone feel a part of the show, even in the third levels. Great show…Kings of Leon kick ass also. Their new CD is really something.

I’m going to have to side with the Liberal. U2 is a great band, fantastic band.

The Edge has accomplished some very unique sounds which, even though they vary from album to album, they are difinitively his.

Actually, he sounds alot like Phil Manzenara from Roxy Music. Phil was first.

Englebert Humperdink makes me swoon.
