But doesn’t farming simply replace one set of plants with another? Net change in photosynthesis should be nearly zero then.
No. You cannot compare the photosynthesis power of a tree with a tomato plant.
Entirely incorrect. Tomatoes and other crop plants are much more effective than trees. Think about how many tomatoes you can grow in the area that one tree takes up. Then think about how densely you can grow tomatoes vs. trees (been to an orchard lately?). When you get down to the brass tacks, grasses and reeds are, by far the best photosynthesizers, that’s why switchgrass and sugar cane are being tapped for alternative fuels. Bamboo is pretty damn good as well. Trees suck as far as photosynthetic capacity goes. Moreover deciduous trees are distinctly darker than grasses and have enormous root systems that are fantastic at pulling water out of the ground and spewing it into the air, both of which do a number on the planets albedo (see the Nature article on Kilimanjaro that I posted on the previous page).

Good to see you learned how to plot residuals at some point in your life. Too bad that’s not what NASA’s graph shows.
The units along the y-axis are millions of square kilometers and the x-axis is years. The Arctic’s line trends down, Antarctica’s line trends up. The residuals just mean you’re less sure of how well that line fits your data or how biased your line is from the data.
Oops. Took a second look at that graph. Thanks for the correction.

Ha! Good point! I remember Al Gore having to cancel a rally against global warming some years ago — it was too cold.
Human-Induced Global Warming … one of the biggest cons ever played on humanity.

Once again point out that experts don’t necessarily know what the fuck they are talking about. Next decade it will be global moistening.
The problem is that they still have a limited data set that they are drawing huge conclusions on.
We had a warming spike, bet ya a cooling phase is on the way, followed by another warming phase.
