Good bring it…
America can’t always take the loss so other countries can grow. It’s easy math of money in vs money out. You can only spend more than you make for so long.
We’ll see if this sentiment holds true as COL increases.
Would you care to elaborate on this?
The problems America faces are so complex from decades of mismanagment from both sides of the two party system I’m enjoying this “outsider” just screwing stuff up.
Until big corporations learn to take losses like normal people (doubtful it will ever happen), people take responsibility for their day to day choices (doubtful again), and the government quits bailing out people that offer nothing to society (again doubtful) nothing will change.
The poor of communities used to be taken care of by the communities around them. If your family was suffering and I lived near by. I would tighten my belt and ensure your families needs were met because you were a hard working great man that hit a bump, now we have slime ball druggies that refuse to take care of their families getting government support making huge money in black market deals and have no reason to change but continue to drag society in the wrong direction because their actions are rewarded.
Big corporations are “too big to fail” and bailed out while raping the American people and never take a loss or reduction in profit margins. In the mean time poor retired people living on SS only see their purchasing power diminish before their eyes.
Basic economics…
Think of the economy like a bucket. The trade deficit is like a bucket with a hole in it. Water leaks into other countries buckets. When the number of holes is large enough or the size of the hole is big enough that more water leaks out than can be replaced eventually the bucket runs dry.
Admitilly the American bucket is huge compared to most international economies. But it is near or past the point where input equals output. It’s time to reduce some of those hole sizes or plug some until the level in the bucket is restored.
I’m torn on this one. In a perfect world where slave labor, government subsidized industries and trading partners who don’t follow trade deals didn’t exist, I’d be all for unlimited free trade.
But bad actors do exist and the US is the only country that abides by the deals they sign. I think there are only two aluminum smelters left in the US and steel dumping is crushing anyone left trying to make steel here.
Should the biggest economy on earth throw their weight around when negotiating for better deals?
Markets don’t seem to care.
I get this mentality, but at the same time I don’t… Ya, it’s amusing to watch events unfold as if it’s the world craziest soap opera, but then you realize it’s not TV it’s real life and there are real life consequences.
I’m not really sure what you mean here? Are you referring to bailouts/handouts? “Big Corporations” employ something like 50% of American workers and if they start taking losses like us normal folk then us normal people are going to be out of work and quickly. So, imo, it’s not really beneficial to the average American worker to let them take huge losses just to spite big corporations that use imported steel, for example.
Plus, it isn’t just big corporations that use imported goods. Even Ma & Pa stores use imported goods.
If you’re meaning this specifically in relation to corporate handouts/bailouts then, generally, I agree. Businesses shouldn’t be too big to fail. If they are then, imo, anti-trust laws should be used if applicable to cut the businesses down to a point where they aren’t too big to fail. If anti-trust laws aren’t applicable then Congress needs to legislate a way for this to happen. A business or an industry shouldn’t be able to cripple the economy based on their poor practices, imo.
Now, if you mean big corporations should have to use American made/mined raw goods and if they can’t make a profit using said American goods then too bad, I disagree. Part of the reason we import materials like steel is that regulations have made it absurdly expensive to produce the same thing here. Consider, it’s cheaper to buy steel from outside of the US and import it (transportation costs) than to produce it here. Why is that? Well, in part because labor is cheaper in China or Mexico or India because they don’t have the same labor protections we have. Moral judgment withstanding, that’s just the economics of it and using tariffs to force US-based companies hands on the matter, increasing COGS, is not in anyone’s best interest. I’m not sure there’s an economist in existence that would argue tariffs are a good thing or could lead to a good thing.
Again, I’m not really sure what you mean here, but if you mean living within their means, debt management, etc… Then, I agree it’s a pipe dream.
Sure, that’s unlikely to change.
Hyperbole aside, I agree “to big to fail” is a problem that has still not been addressed.
I love when people makes these types of comments…
This is nonsense. A) The economy isn’t a “fixed bucket” or fixed pie as most people put it. It grows over time. Yes, we run a trade deficit. Please explain to me in “basic economics” why that’s a problem in our current service-based economy?
Please note, A) we’re a net exporter of services and B) we’re the second largest single country exporter in the world. https://www.cia.gov/library/publications/the-world-factbook/rankorder/2078rank.html
B) As those other buckets fill up, the cost to buy materials from that market will also go up as the living standard increases in that country. At some point, it will either become cost effective to produce those same materials in the US again or another shift will occur to a less developed region of the world that can provide what, China for example, currently provides.
Hey! Is there anyway on here I can message you? I have a few beginner questions and figured you
Could help me out! Thanks
Huh on politics??

First off, I haven’t caught every post on this thread, there is a lot.
Trump has his America’s Nato allies, who sent troops to Afghanistan, up in total pissing fits. Russia can get out of Ukraine and behaving as such before they deserve to join the G nations. Bashing on and on about trade I wonder is not making any friends, unless with his domestic base.
Don’t get me started…
It’s one thing to have policy preferences (in this case, protectionist leaning policy) but it’s entirely something else to also be so uncouth as to just blatantly piss off other allied heads of state. FML
Somebody clarify my mind, is Trump more of a public horn blower who is really a master chef at creating the conditions for successful policy when the right moment strikes? During his election he came across as very alarming, but I heard some say that those were generalized talking points and that actual policy would be more pragmatic.
With what we just saw with North Korea;
Was all the ‘Rocket Man’ and other blustery rhetoric just a means over time to season and simmer Kim Jong-Un and then pick the right moment to bring it all together and serve it up as a luxury meal?
Might I get you started anyway? I realize that he is only a popular culture star, but Robert De Niro was in Toronto and absolutely slammed Trump.
Does this type of thing tie into my post below?
I realize that a bit of above I forgot to put in Mufasa’s thread, but did I just kill this? I have another Trump story to post.
I will test the waters with this:
there is mention in the article of the foundation going outside its bounds by assisting with Trump’s campaign. there is already enough fur flying about possible Russian involvement that another possible meddling is of concern.
All with ultimately be an exercise in trading taxpayer dollars for shining a spotlight on Trump’s willingness to pardon people regardless of the law
Nah I don’t think so. Speaking for myself, I’m currently very judicious with any online forum Preformatted textposting, just due to time constraints and such. I’m sure others are the same.
