Shit Kasich could have beaten HRC. Anyone could. The GOP then picked the only candidate (probably?) that ended up being humiliated in the pop vote.
The GOP (party) didn’t pick him. He beat a field of 17 GOP certified contenders. He was supposed to be the stunt candidate. The party greatly underestimated how unpopular they are with their own base.

And the super honest type are highly unlikely to make it to that point, without relying on some introduction of a creative solution.

Actually enact the sanctions that were overwhelmingly supported by both parties and signed by the POTUS.
No it doesn’t win much, but it least they negotiated a lowest common denominator answer to the Russians - nevertheless I think it’s a very positive note that “neutrals” such as Sweden were brought aboard (Sweden is hugely important for Russia in geopolitical terms).
And Russians are very pissed, all that stemming from their inferiority complex “We don’t care bwa-ha-ha we just obsess over it on State TV round-the-clock”
The masterstroke would have been stripping them of this summer’s soccer World Cup, It may seem ludicrous, but Putin staked a lot on it PR-wise for the domestic audience.
