It’s how the argument is framed that bothers me. Donald Trump basically ran on keeping “those people” out. We will build a big beautiful wall. All of this is deliberately aimed at painting immigrants as the bad guys. Life was better before more of “those people” came over here. Everyone knows what he is saying and who it largely appeals to.
But hey when you’re courting rich people and trying to appeal to some poor Americans who need something to blame for their plight it works great. No one wants to say who’s causing it and profiting from it. It’s easier to keep the rich corporations happy (and doing what they need to continue to exploit these people) and let the poor Americans be duped by thinking the brown people are the reason for all woes and if we could just get rid of them everything would be better.
As usual we need to find a bad guy because we can’t be doing anything that would harm these wealthy people with influence.
Do you deny that porous borders allow for easier drug and human trafficking? The 911 attackers were all on overstayed visas (saudis).
We don’t enforce the laws we have. You can say that without saying we hate all brown migrant workers. Trump is incapable of nuance, for sure. He won’t go after the companies exploiting illegals either. Nobody on either side will.
All politicians whip their base up with some threatening boogeyman. Not really new.
When I say “we” I mean the majority of people who aren’t smart enough to see around the root cause of what they think is a problem. And we’ve talked about this before but you have a real habit of saying “meh no one’s gonna do anything on either side so we’re all good.” You won’t find me disagreeing that both sides are part of the problem however one side ran someone who made it the hallmark of his campaign.
You said you were for the jailing of owners of companies hiring illegals and exploiting them and then in the same breath say Trump is incapable of nuance. You realize you are essentially defending the very person who has done what you say you’re against right?
I never defended Trump. He’s a buffoon and a hypocrite.
My point was painting all border hawks as racists isn’t quite fair. That point was made poorly I see.
Don’t mistake my apathy and cynicism as excusing pols. There have been laws on the books to punish businesses for hiring illegals since Reagan if memory serves. Nobody wants to enforce them. It was a sincere question: “who can we vote for that will actually enforce the law?”
I don’t know of a single prominent US politician talking about this.
You have a President saying over and over again how illegal immigration is a problem and running against what you said is a boogeyman.
Meanwhile the same side gives massive tax cuts to the places that directly profit and exploit what they say is a huge problem. And they keep the focus off those people profiting and on poor people doing shitty ass jobs for next to nothing as the “problem.”
Enforcing the law isn’t really the issue. Can’t run on the “problem” if it’s solved.
Thats true but he doesnt have issues with white immigrantes…btw Milliania throwing dueces within 1yr of exit from white house. Right about now shes being protected and served well by agent Tyrone Bigginz
The point of me questioning this was to illustrate that the above is a matter of opinion, right? If we look at the BLS data, at least in the industry I had posted (hospitality iirc), employee demographics track pretty consistently with the population.
That doesn’t mean “a lot” of American’s don’t feel it is beneath them, but I think this opinion, which is often repeated, appears to be blown out of proportion.
I agree that the penalties are not steep enough for employers, however, I’m not sure jail time is warranted either. I also don’t think it’s a solution. Jail time might dissuade some, but we know it won’t dissuade all. I would prefer we find ways to incentives the hiring of legal workers. It would be a lot easier to change the behavior of most employer’s this way as opposed to penalizing them if they’re caught, right?
I also don’t think, generally, it has a lot to do with racism. Or anything to do with racism really. Where do illegal immigrants come from? It’s not Europe or Africa and it’s not really Asia either, generally. It’s Central and South America. These people are “brown” if you will. American’s like neat little boxes affixed with easy to understand labels. I don’t’ really get it, but that’s how it is.
That said, the wall is stupid. I’ve made my feelings on the matter pretty clear over the last two years. However, it is also stupid to continue to allow people to cross the border illegally.
You suggest we should punish employers for hiring illegal immigrants, which I agree. Should we not “punish” those that break our sovereign borders as well?
I believe he is referring to placing two fingers in the air, ie, the peace sign. As in, I’m out of here, peace.
Wow. After telling my son at least 10 times in one week not to scratch himself in public I impatiently said “keep your hands off your dick, it won’t fall off.”
He said that same phrase to his 2yo brother in front of mommy. Woops.
When our youngest was about 18 mos my wife had him in the bathroom while she was getting ready to go somewhere. One of her makeup containers wasn’t cooperating and she frustratingly said “Fuck it” it tossed in the drawer. I guess he spent the next 10 minutes running around saying “Fuck it, fuck it, fuck it, fuck it, fuck it, fuck it…”.
I wasn’t home at the time and she fessed up about it months later. She was waiting for me to drop the F-bomb so she could blame me for him learning the word. Apparently I never did (pretty shocking-in-and-of-itself).
