Trump has done things that were very similar to Hitler’s moves. I disagree strongly with putting him in the Hitler bracket, but on a one off basis there’s plenty of stars that align.
If it’s news to you, you didn’t attempt a very basic google lol
I don’t doubt it. But then, I’m sure a cursory search of Twitter would turn up instances of people comparing, say, Obama to Hitler. GWB too. Also, the guy who umpired Serena Williams’ disastrous US Open final. All of which is why I was careful to say no one of “political significance” has called him Hitler.
I did. First thing to note is the event is found in many, many news sources. Second is the following remark from one of those sources:
“While some could see the remark as a veiled jab at President Trump, Obama did not mention Trump by name during the event, according to the newspaper.”
Trump is definitely not Hitler, but there are other points to consider. In the last German elections in 1932 before the Nazi seizure of power, Hitler’s NSDAP won 33% of the votes, while SPD (socialists) and KPD (bona fide communists) won a tally of 35%. Interestingly, the nazis never broke that plateau.
The communist’s refusal to support a center-left government actually led to Nazi’s being included in the ruling right wing coalition.
Also the one third of German voters voting for Nazis defied any conventient explanation as Nazi support cut across social, gender, educational and regional lines resulting in roughly the same percentage of votes per every strata.
Subsequent academic research has shown that comparatively stronger performance of the Nazis was in “red” working class neighborhoods where voters flipped from communists to nazis in a span of a few years.
I always find that phenomenon fascinating. Any ‘class’ explanation for Nazism fails at its first hurdle. Nazism had huge intellectual support (as did fascism more generally) and also had blue collar support.
I remember reading that Hitler had the SA attack the centrists most, as any communist could be turned towards their party. Hitler believed they were Nazi voters in the making, and he wasn’t wrong in the least.
I find this interesting, as the Strasser brothers essentially said the communists are so far apart they are the same thing. they then decided the Nazis should offer to join forces with the communists and be as one.
that got Hitler so pissed off one brother got beaten, and dragged to his death after being tied to a car. the other escaped to neutral Switzerland and spent until the end of the war running an anti Nazi radio broadcast. It was illegal under Nazism to listen to any but a limited selection of frequencies, but I think the belief is some found a way to tune it.
In regards to your sources. Vice is very anti Trump. But that alone is not enough to discredit that article. Good information is good information. I wish I had the time to go through it with a fine tooth comb for you but I am so busy at the moment.
But a few things I got from the article:
Talking about how Trump calls media dishonest being reminiscent of what depots do. Trump was right in his assessment.
Him lying about his inauguration crowd? Really? Really?
He raised suspicions about illegal ballot casing?
The last point in the vice article mentioned the ban on immigration from 7 Muslim majority countries. That was a ban put into effect under Obamas administration.
That Vice article is full tilt. Its one conflation after another with a whole bunch of hyperbole. Nothing of any real substance there.
As for that article by The Conversation. Did you read it? It doesn’t support your statement it actually supports mine. Well both of ours I suppose since we are in agreement that it is ridiculous to compare him to a Nazi, especially Hitler.
EyeDentist read my post where I obviously point out how Obama knows better than to flat out make the comparison by name. I don’t know why he felt the need to point out something I already knew and acknowledged.
I guess we are going to ignore the Obama comment then. I guess thats fair since he didn’t actually make the comparison by name right?
The comparison has happened several times on several major media networks. This trend didn’t come out of nowhere.
I mentioned the college students because they are being educated by a faculty that leans heavily to the left. Yeah you will find all manner of opinions on twitter and the internet. But on a college campus you will be hard pressed to find students saying Serena is Hitler or Obama is Hitler etc etc.
I would imagine if you were to go on a college campus and ask randomly compare Trump to any other person alive or dead you would be shocked at the amount who bring up Hitler. I am not saying its all or even most but it is probably way way higher then it should be.
You have to separate the communist party from the communist party member. Hitler wanted to crush the former, and was happy to take the votes of the latter, and actively courted such. Hitler and party electoral officials knew that they could turn them far more easily than, say, SPD voters.
Once Hitler was chancellor, however, the tactics no longer required vote courting. This makes Hitler’s attitude somewhat protean.
Trump calls the media dishonest in situations where we eventually find out they had the truth. Hence Hitler esque move
Lying in the face of photographic evidence to bolster support numbers that don’t exist.
He raised suspicion despite already having been sworn in, with full access to the internal knowledge the public eventually got that there is zero proof of anything more than 1 off fraud.
Ugh. Can’t really bring myself to beat this dead horse.
What did you expect from a news source comparing Trump to Hitler?
The one that acknowledges a ton of similarities?
Like I already said upthread, silly to compare him to Hitler holistically. But absolutely true that Trump has an above average rate of pulling from the authoritarian playbook
