Umm… Your sentiments are noble, yet somewhat naive. The fact is Haitians have been completely fucked for most of their history. They were fucked when they were slaves on Santo Domingo (and later Saint Dominque) and not much has changed during the three hundred years of independence during which they were ruled mostly by unhinged lunatics.
And Haitians, like all other people living in world’s shitholes know they’re fucked - no matter how much one is intelligent, educated or hardworking, no matter how much one possesses entrepreneurial spirit or a natural affinity for some other endeavor , the result is always the same - you’re fucked, you’re living in one of the world’s worst shitholes and you have to eke out a pathetic existence.
The only way out of the shithole that is Haiti is permanent emigration to the US and Canada, the proverbial jackpot. Probably no single Haitian that has ever managed to get into the US has contemplated voluntarily going back, expect maybe to run for President of Haiti something (Wyclef Jean comes to mind).
So no, they’re not overstaying their visas because of the earthquake’s aftermath but because Haiti is one the worst places in the world.
I guess but seems like big deal…1000 working Haitians… Sending them back to shit hole just to create news buzz so people leave boy wonder alone. O well maybe Brandgellina will adopt them
To break down the Net Neutrality issue to it’s most basic form: if Verizon is your ISP, you may be forced to use Yahoo! as your search engine unless you’re willing to pay more to use Google.
Not sure if this convinces some people. I’ve got in laws that GENUINELY believe (to this day) that Obama is a foreign born Muslim AND the antichrist. The actual antichrist.
All of those things are true. The appalling scale of their earthquake disaster was more a function of shoddy/nonexistent building codes than it was the strength of the temblor itself. But the fact that the island has been a tire-fire for 300+ years doesn’t justify adding significantly to its current humanitarian crisis by shipping back 60K refugees for no reason other than ‘because law.’
Nevertheless, the earthquake occurred, conditions there are especially deplorable, and the addition of 60K potential cholera vectors would make the situation on the ground worse. The point being, these visa overstays are not motivated by some sort of circumstantial, trumped-up artifice, but rather by undisputed, compelling facts on the ground. Further, unless I’ve missed it in the news, the Haitian refugees are not engaging in crime sprees, or gorging themselves on the govt teat while spending their days doing drugs and/or kneeling during the anthem. So in short, there’s no compelling reason to boot them out, and plenty of compelling reasons why repatriation would result in material harm to them and others. That trumps ‘because law’ in my book every time.
I’m not advocating their deportation, I’m just saying that Haitian emigration to the US is an one way street, regardless of the earthquake.
Incidentally, the most spectacularly racist comments about Haitians that I’ve ever heard came from black Frenchmen from overseas departements in the Caribbean. Apparently it’s a mortal insult to them to allege some kind of connection with the Haitians.
That executive order really cuts both ways doesn’t it? Maybe if Barack “Pen and a Phone” Obama had worked with the Reps a bit like Clinton did. CPP, net neutrality etc… could have been legislation and not an executive order.
Come to think of it the last time we had a surplus was when Clinton and a Rep Congress compromised to get legislation passed (what a horrifying thought).
Not disagreeing with the overall point but overturning an executive order that makes sense is just stupid. Doesn’t matter if it’s legislation or not if something is a good idea let it be. IMO net neutrality fits that bill for sure.
Maybe Time’s man of the Year is a list Trump doesn’t want to be on. They don’t always pick people because they’re good guys. For example:
Hitler
Stalin (twice)
Nikita Khrushchev
Richard Nixon
Ayatollah Khomeini
Mikhail Gorbachev
BHO (Twice)
