Ya, I mean, you could argue it was rape, sure. Was it legally rape, well in Jefferson’s life it wasn’t. Was it immoral, maybe. They could have easily loved each other. All this happened after Jefferson’s wife died and I don’t believe he remarried. We really don’t know the particulars of his relationship with Sally Hemmings. I don’t know if there are other accounts of relationships with other slaves.
Jefferson is one of the more interesting founding fathers.
In the real world of course it matters. It matters a great deal. But in politics the only thing that matters, you will find, is perception. And how something can be spun days, hours and even minutes after it was said means everything.

Anyway…try not to take this stuff too seriously. The people playing the game at the highest level full understand that it’s a game.
