This seems quite typical thinking for many US citizens. It might bite US in the ass thought. Europe is pretty important to US, even though Europe needs US more than US needs Europe.
Cutting relations would still have devastating effects to US economy and security.
I don’t think many European countries are ready to lean towards China yet. US is still western democracy and there’s long history with European countries. If US takes Greenland by force, things may change.
As long as NATO stays alive (with or without US), I think it’s highly unlikely China or Russia can take Greenland in any way.
Greenland and Demnark stated that it’s not for sale. I think the only way out is that US gives up, or there will be some (US favoured) trade deal about Greenlands minerals.
This is what I foresee, some kind of deal. But I really dont think this is about minerals in the same way Venezuela isn’t about oil. It’s about keeping China from getting those oil/minerals.
NATO is the USA. Europe isn’t going to war over Greenland.
Yep. There’s definitely global race between US and China going on.
USA is about 60-70% of NATO, hard to say what would happen.
Oh, I 100% agree. Andrewgen once called Europeans weak minded, and he is partly right in his own way. Eastern Europe has not been so naive, but the west is just waking up. Hope they’re not too late.
Its interesting. Like with Russia/Ukraine the ruling class didn’t budge until they realized that Putin was about to freeze them out through the winter, and may very well have kept going right on in to reconstruct the old Soviet Union.
But by the time the aristocrats realized it was time to get ready, it was too late. Russia had poured in to Ukraine and became entrenched and fortified.
Trump has some interesting ways of getting peoples attention and keeping them on their toes. After enough times of hearing him say “I’m just going to take Greenland.”, there is actually the beginning of a defense force.
They (france, etc) aren’t going to have to defend against the US, but they do need a defense force on location.
No one needs the aristocrats of europe deciding that they’ll get ready when they’re good and ready to. Again.
Greenland CAN’T be about security. It has to be about the U.S. getting the resources. If it is actually about security, Trump has handled this in the absolute worst way possible.
I have a hunch that in the 2028 election, there will be a candidate that will be neither Rep. nor Dem, that will either win, or get a significant percentage of vote(That will prevent a 270 electoral vote win)
I don’t know about other people, but I’m getting sick of all this extremism there seems to be. Does anyone think this as a likely scenario?
(And another thing; will I regret posting on this political thread?)
That’s what I meant, I should have stated it. I think its a possibility that they might now have the opportunity to gain some foothold, for the reasons I previously stated.
Enforcing the Monroe Doctrine, and forcing Asians and Europeans alike to respect our authority. Following the Teddy Roosevelt Playbook. In the hopes of getting added to Mt Rushmore.
It’s about drawing a line in the sand dude. Across this line you do not
Security, rare earth minerals and stopping the Artic Silk Road are all wrapped up in it. But they are just “pros” of running shit on this half of the globe. None of them alone are the Reason.
I like how they’re going north/south instead of the classic east/west. Looks good on paper anyhow.
Bypasses Suez & Panama canals too, which saves a lot of money & hassle with pirates & unfriendly nations too.
Yeah, logistically it looks better. Probably good on fuel too.
That ice though. Very unforgiving. I think I’ve heard of a few ships getting locked in and requiring a long wait for rescue.
. Pros & cons. I’m pretty ignorant of international shipping stuff though. I do remember that my oldest brother was on the Hayler, DD-997 and they participated in an oil rig explosion search & rescue in the North Sea. He said that was a real mess, complicated by the bitter cold and unforgiving/deadly conditions.
I think were heading back to era of international power politics and imperialism. It might be that they were never absent, but just more controlled from 1950ish to 2020ish.
if US would take Greenland by force, and China takes Taiwan (or maybe even US takes Taiwan?), it would be clear that we’re living a new era. Russia tried to do it with Ukraine (like they did with Georgia and Cechenya), but they fucked up.
If US wants just to keep China out from Greenland, it can move a bunch of forces/establish couple more military bases there (there’s already one US base?).
