If they all worked and didn’t rely on public benefits, I’d view the whole situation much differently. As it stands, Maine Democrats have entrenched a vampire economy that’s bleeding the state’s middle class into nonexistence.

Well I did not make the comparison. Others did, while kinda romantizing the immigration which happened back then. Mass immigration always causes some problems and assimilation processes are slow.

Not trying to pick nits, but you have to work for that, and its the first thing that gets whacked when you screw up.
In fact, I’m not absolutely certain, but If I recall correctly (big if) there was actually a deduction from your pay. Maybe that has changed or is my blurry memory misremembering- but you still had to serve (once again, at the time) 6 years to qualify for the full amount.

Historically, all of the populations mentioned above contributed to society within a fairly short period of time. My grandpa came here as a boy and spoke English within a few years. They had to, there was no vast welfare state like what exists in Maine to give them the option to be insular and not participate in the economy. Public schools didn’t teach in Polish.
Democrats at the time were busy using Polish Catholic immigrants to Indiana as political scapegoats, even resurrecting the KKK around anti-immigration, which was also a massive public grifting and political corruption operation, just not as comprehensive as the nonprofiteers operating in Maine today.
Maine had a 1920’s version of the KKK, too, but nothing like Indiana’s. Maine Democrats actually enacted the Maine Klan’s only public policy priority in 2022 when they ended public funding to sectarian (i.e. Catholic) schools.
Public policy in Maine today is literally crafted around non-assimilation, and it is working quite well in that regard. The Democrats seem to be very well-entrenched, and the public money is flowing to all the right places to keep their grift alive while the conditions here deteriorate at a rapid pace.

I lived there for most of my life. Its always been primarily white… like shockingly white.
It is very diverse now.
Their politics are shifting that way as well.
Because liberals are literal cucks to anyone with a darker skin tone than theirs.
They yearn to be dominated, which is why they beg Big Daddy Gubmint to go deeper as they watch their sons turn into daughters and their daughters turn into whores.
Its a domination/power bottom kink.
Certain people worship a God who married a 12 year old, and then decided that 12 was too old, so they lowered the legal age to marry to 9.
These people believe that eating pork is bad, but using children as sex toys and bullet shields is okay.
And they have NO qualms about raping anyone who they believe to be an infidel. EU stats have made that clear.
Maybe it’s not so unreasonable to be selective about who you let in your country?

Well, you were there, so I’ll take your word for it…because of your track record of being spot on.
I don’t necessarily disagree about this.
The legislature in Iraq is nightmarish and there are several muslim countries which have very misogynistic culture. And like you saud, European countries have learned in practice that certain immigrant groups increase sex crimes significantly.
But the problem lies within the practice. Do we deny muslims in general (this includes over billion people worldwide)?
I know several muslim immigrants from Turkey and around (Kurds for example), abd they’re great people. I don’t see why they should be excluded because of Iraq’s shittiness.
Maybe excluding certain countries then? We’ll there’s same problems at the end.
Then there’s a the human right perspective, which can of course be mitigated saying human rights are bullshit (which is quite common theme these days, specially in US). There’s not much to discuss about this. You either believe in general human value or don’t.
So, I think cutting certain countries out (not to mention excluding whole religion) is a crude tool which gives bad results.
I kinda like the way many European countries have turned this. We don’t segregate immigrants by country, but in many places you’ll get deported if you start acting shenanigans. Not that it works perfectly, or that it’s even possible to speak about common immigration policy in EU.
But it’s a decent solution, if you get in (50% of Iraqi’s have been denied/deported in Finland for example), you need to assimilate to the country’s law and culture.

I’d be fine with shutting down all immigration from Muslim countries, even if in principle I think it shouldn’t have any religious tests. Democrats grievously abused the principled system to import a new voting bloc, destabilize society, and push Democratic Socialism as a solution to the problems they engineered.
We need to deal with that before we worry about an immigration system that’s fair to the whole planet.
Maine keeps finding out that everything the Democrats said wasn’t happening is, in fact, happening. Maine law prohibits issuing drivers licenses to people in the country illegally, but somehow two people were struck and killed in a week by people with Maine licenses who got deported.
Portland just let another one slip when the city council pointed out that Trump’s new transportation guidelines could mean losing 10 bus drivers.
But the woman who asked about illegals getting benefits was boo’d and shouted down at a Graham Platner rally with shouts of “That doesn’t happen”, with Platner going on to suggest she was brainwashed and deserving of sympathy.
Of course they get benefits. Of course they get licenses and cars. Of course they vote. Of course they get hired as police. The whole system has been set up to simply not check immigration status for any of that stuff.

My belief, yes. Or at minimum use a quota system where only a small number are allowed to immigrate yearly.
I hate to use the analogy, but what if we decided to import NAZIs from around the globe? If we allowed 10,000 NAZIs to immigrate and flood a single town. Wouldn’t it change that American city to where it becomes something else? I’m sure plenty of NAZIs are good people, but they just have a different culture, right?
