I agreed with the author too when it comes to INTERVIEWS. I don’t agree that my entire life needs fit some static stereotype of “success”. If I am going to the gym, I look like I do in my avatar. They can think what they want to of me.

Define “nicely”. Look, I am working in North Houston today. At least two of my patients had sagging pants…and we go along great.

They were dressed “nicely” to me…because I know that culture.

Think about how people treated you when you were in your Air Force Dress Uniform vs. looking like a slob.

That’s all there is to it.
Actually, that isn’t all there is to it.

The Air Force is a military entity. I freely volunteered to become a SOLDIER…which means I am no longer a civilian.

I SERVED so that free men an women can dress any fucking way they want as long as it isn’t bothering someone else.

You and I seem to be on different sides of what that freedom entails.

Yeah, the point is, the entire country doesn’t agree with you that it makes them look like idiots.

There is entire culture out there where the girls LIKE that and it equals more ass and more social influence.

Sad this shit needs to be spelled out in such…“caucazoidish” terms.

Its kinda like this guy I know, huge white guy, big beard, long hair, wears a black bandana. He is a great guy and really nice, but because he is always dressed and looks like he is in a biker gang, you can see people that don’t know him be really uneasy around him.

He understands this and tries to make sure he puts people at ease, he has also been hassled by he cops for things he didn’t do just because he was in the vicinity. He realizes this and doesn’t give them trouble because he actually likes the feeling of people thinking he’s a badass. And I have a feeling the sagging pants crew does also which would account for the increased social influence in certain circles that you speak of.

However, if you want to portray that image to gain favor in certain circles, you should just accept that being a “badass” in one circle, makes you a thug/criminal/idiot in many others.

Edit: Not sure how the rest of this was chopped off the first time I wrote it.

Not at all.

Life is one giant interview. Every interaction with a stranger is an interview.

You are making a choice to make your life potentially difficult in these “interviews.” That’s certainly your choice, and I support your right to so chose.

But don’t bitch about your life being difficult or strangers treating you funny.

When you meet a stranger, the first thing they notice is your appearance, and they make assumptions.

My life is difficult enough, so I play the margins.

Everybody stereotypes.
True…and also not the point at all.

This isn’t about whether INDIVIDUALS STEREOTYPE.

It is about how as a population on a mass scale, one race can be affected by that stereotyping to a degree that it literally holds back social maturation and development which can prevent success.

Like we were just shown, some here want to claim one race does most crime…and then turn around and claim that race should not matter…which ignores the negative effect this stereotype can have on an entire race as a whole and then ignores the cyclical social decay as a result.

Simply put, if you want to claim that race is a non-issue, bringing up stats about what race does what crime would never occur…because the act itself implies that RACE is the factor and not CIRCUMSTANCE.
I get what you’re saying. However, stereotypes don’t make anybody turn to a life of crime. I’ve spoke with people who grew up during segregation, people who went to black schools and got their textbooks from white schools. Books that were missing pages and were covered in urine and feces. The same stereotypes exist for them or have existed for them and it didn’t stop them from being successful. I’m not saying this to be offensive but eventually excuses mean nothing and you’ve to look at the points of failure. Crime, especially black on black crime, being tolerated is why it’s so rampant.

Well, that’s great in that sub-culture. Bitching that the culture overall should bow to the will your dress choice is just silly.

When in Rome, eat spagetti.

Exactly.

I traveled to Saudi Arabia recently.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, I ditched the Haredi dress I strongly prefer and went with a navy blue suit and tie.

This coming from a man who dresses with the black robe and curls?

Dude, of all people, you should be able to understand how important it is to be able to respect your own culture without negative attacks.

I don’t see how this response refers to what I wrote at all.

I didn’t write anything about stereotypes making someone turn to a life of crime.

I live in 65% Black Prince George’s county Maryland. I don’t expect to see teen-agers of any race walking around in Brooks Brothers preppy attire or wearing 3 piece suits. I do however have a problem with anyone white, black, asian walking around with their pants pulled down below their ass. Does this make them a Thug? I don’t think so…does this make them asking for trouble? I think so. Is it racial to demand people cover their asses? I don’t think so. I don’t see the majority of white people walking around with their asses hanging out, but I do see some pretty sloppy looking white people. I guess I just assume the white people are homeless.
Why in Gods name do you live in PG County?..ugggghh

Haredi. So that’s what the black suit and hat is called? I live next door to a large Jewish community in Passaic, NJ (Passaic Park) and didn’t know what it was called. Learned something new today, whad’ya know.

Actually, all I am arguing is that “majority” governs…and then claims this has no effect culturally…when it clearly does.

No, sagging pants don’t mean anything more negative than guys spray painting their Girbaud jeans when I was in high school.

If people are seeing that as a negative so bad as to literally call someone a THUG for that alone, they are wrong. There is no way around that.

It doesn’t make it right just because more people share that same bias.

You would think…

Even with the negative attacks, to at least have the respect to mind your business when it comes to that culture. Specially when sagging pants, has nothing on the tight ass basketball shorts from the 70’s where people balls fell out if they didn’t have a jock strap on. Or jeans tighter then the underwear they’re looking at in the sagging pants.

By “Haredi dress” I mean “the dress style of Haredi” Not a “dress” like an article of clothing.

Who is talking about what is “right” ? I am talking about what “is”

Dressing like a gentleman will help the average guy get through life without unnecessary complications. That’s a fact. It has nothing to do with “right” or “wrong.”

As you well know, the average black guy has enough trouble getting by without adding to it by intentionally chosing clothing that seperates him from the majority culture.

There’s a black Yemini Jewish guy who runs the bakery in Crown Heights who I may call to get on this thread.

Yeah, part of that problem being that I can not choose my own culture even if it does not bother you at all and isn’t unhygienic.

That clothing doesn’t seem to separate the people who dress like that from anyone but the same people who seem to be ignoring who they are completely.

The average Jewish man has enough trouble without choosing clothing that separates him from the majority of the culture.

Such as? Aside from the occasional cheap joke and copious amounts of bodyhair I have not heard about the modern plight of the male jew in the states these days.

It is statements like this that let me know many of you just wait to make comments on what I write and do not actually follow discussions.

I was referring to his Heredic dress…which I mentioned twice now.
