Training Partners: A Thing of the Past?

@anna_5588 Everyone is too busy

@jshaving If you’re ever in the area, hit me up. We’ll come up with something awful, haha. And I very much appreciate the sentiment!

@cyclonengineer Martial arts definitely ranks as one of the most positive things I ever did. And it’s amazing how so little of it was about learning how to fight. It was all the ā€œotherā€ stuff that mattered.

@Andrewgen_Receptors You say ā€œgluttonā€ and I think ā€œSe7enā€, haha.

Powerlifting (although not competitive anymore) helps me immensely. My upbringing was pretty awful with an absentee father who, when he would come home, start drinking until he was drunk and then threw beer bottles/cans at my head in anger.

I suffer from epilepsy, depression, and anxiety. Been dealing with these for many, many years. If gyms did not exist, I don’t know if I’d be alive.

Haven’t been able to even get to the gym in about two weeks because my depression is awful. Going today, though. I’ve gotta recommit. Not too long ago, I was in there 5 days a week without fail.

Current training programs like the Surge Challenge workout program (which I am now doing) are poor matches for workout partners.

Early in my training years we worked out in small groups. Three was the best number for timing between sets. But four would work too. The ā€œpartyā€ started around the bench press (on Chest Days). Back in the 1970’s your bench press was the most asked capability. The public’s question has changed from ā€œHow much can you lift?ā€ to ā€œHow much can you bench?ā€

Many times I trained without a partner, but would ā€œwork inā€ on various equipment. The gym was very social and there was much conversation. (Actually no women until the 1980’s)

I had a few workout partners. They would come and go. Circumstances would arise such that it failed to be practical. I would then be back to working out solo. Right when I turned 40 I found my favorite workout partner. He was my workout partner until I was diagnosed with dermatamyositis. We were good friends until he moved out of town.

Once I got back into the gym, about a year later, I have worked out solo to this day.

Are you in the Midwest? I’m clearly game to slow your morning way down.

I do have to point out this sounds like the tagline of a horror movie or exhibit A in a serial killer trial.

I have had 2 phenomenal training partners.

Both were during times our schedules matched up as did our intensity and insanity for going to the gym. None of us had kids at the time either.

Those days are long gone. They were fun, but I enjoy my time with my children far more. I just hope my body is working well enough to lift with my kids when they get old enough

Had a really good training partner back in the day. It helped increase the effort exerted for sure. Distance makes that difficult now.

Wife as a training partner. Terrible. Our energy matches well outside of the gym, but not in. I found on many occasions that she would be upset about something, probably justifiable, but hearing about that while trying to workout just sucked the life out of my workouts. Now we still go together, but do our own things, and I like that better.

I do usually go at the same time as a group of guys. We don’t do the same routine, but are there for spots and competition. Lately though, they have been a bit lazy. I just have to start my sets while they talk. I’m pretty sure they understand that I am all for the BS during rest periods, but I can’t just extend rest periods every set. It does make it a lot more enjoyable going having them there, and we usually go out for a lunch at least once a week.

I had one great training partner for about 3 months. We had similar goals and pushed each other beyond failure in pursuit of bodybuilding goals. We also worked together unloading trucks at the furniture warehouse. Lost touch when he lost that job and I went to college.

I am still friends with my old training partner. I’ve known him for about 30 of my 34 years. We went to school together from 1st through 12th grade, and did a year together at the same college. We were in a two person band in HS.

It has been difficult lately though. Difficult to keep things going when there is several hundred miles between us. I’ve been putting more effort into sending him texts on a more regular basis. It hurts a bit that I haven’t been getting that effort back. IDK, I am not the type to say something about that.

Had the same experience. We can’t train together AT ALL. Which is fine. I am more solo oriented working out these days anyways.

Final results:

I’m always on the lookout for a training partner however it’s impossible because no one is doing high rep burpees

Which is a shame because when it happens it’s awesome.

You go, I go format with high rep burpees is a very unique training experience which elevates performance. I’ve done a few YT colabs on stream with some absolute beasts and it drives you hard

Ha, I remember voting an enthusiastic no for this poll!

I think I would hate having a training partner. Though I do really wish my 16-year-old son wanted to lift with me sometimes.

Maybe someday!
