Training begets Serenity

Ok thats the link. For powerlifters take the lift all the way(standing) up by holding onto the bar like finishing a deadlift.

Great diffrent exercise–no low back strain at all.

Sorry to hear about the back.
I don’t know anything about the healing of spinal fractures but since the condition is getting worse and not better, is it possible that the stress of training is prolonging the healing process?

Possible. Doc said most stress happens to my back is when I am sleeping on my stomach. Back to the hammock for me.

Deadlifts and heavy front squats aggravate it a little, deadlifts more than anything so no more deadlifts for now.

How long ago was the initial injury? No healing and it’s actually worse? What type of surgery was recommended? I really admire your resolve. Really.

First injury was 36 yrs ago when I was 5 . Fell off of my brothers back and down 2 flights of stairs and broke the vertebrae the 1st time. Second time getting thrown by a Wrestler/judo player and him landing on top of me. His weight was 290ish I still won the match though.

The strain of the heavy pulls and sleeping on my stomach is what agravates it. And this is a new X-ray machine they are using for “bigger” people and the details are better. so maybe not worse just not better yet.

And what I am supposed to do curl up and cry for my mama? Nah not me. I attack and fix it, if I can’t fix it I get around it.

Adapt and overcome.

Defeat and Retreat are not in my Creed.

Oh surgery was putting in 2 bars through 4 vertebrae. No thank you. I am already 41 don’t make me 81 with that surgery.

LOL. Punny your funny.

Now I am not that bull headed to go headlong and forget all of my training. I will get better, that is a given over time…but I am still going to train as hard as I can without stressing the lower back anymore now that I know the severity of the damage.

So off to work to play help out some people. BTW one of my clients is scheduled to pull 425lbs in the deadlift @ age of 58 wt 216lbs --His Birthday none-the-less!!!

Other client is 62 and just hit a 340 ft homerun in a fast pitch league. 2 years ago he just had Rotator/labrum surgery. Where they said no more baseball for you. Right he said “have you met my trainer”

Point is thank you for your thoughts. I will overcome.

Rick

I notice, as a trainer, you seem to prescribe behind the neck presses a lot. I’ve read loads of stuff on here about them being bad for shoulders.

Do you think the risk is exaggerated, that they’re OK if your shoulders are healthy? What’s your take on them?

Just did your suggested complex tonight, it was EVIL, especially the presses straight after front squats. Ouch!

^^^^ As long as that there is no impingments and it is a light load. All fine.

I think most people use really bad form with behind-the-neck presses. Makes me cringe.

Really admire your resolve, Fischer. Super cool, you are.

So your client will be pulling 425 at age 58? Nice!! Hmm . . . that gives me 3 yrs to catch up. I can do that!

Does all the Smith machine stuff help with your spine problems?

Smith machine is a nice change annnnnd not a qaulified spotter around. 58 yr old is my hero. To see this guy walk is to cringe in pain just watching him.

Hey Fischer, I’m curious. Do you follow any specific program or are you doing it by feel? I’ve never been able to see any pattern, but I really admire whatever program you do.

Only program right now I am following is to “Beat the Logbook Program”.

I would love to follow a basic Powerlifting program or westside BUT my lower back says no.

Actually thinking about it more I am following the principles I really like, DC, FS-7 and hct-12. So I take a couple of exercises I like and then feel what system to implement that day and then its GO TIME. I have a core of exercises I alternate for each bodypart that I really love to do and some exercises for my body that I NEED to do.

flat bench pin press w/u’s then 315x6+2+2

Seated front military presses w/u’s then 185x10+4+3

pushdowns stackx20 10 sets.

Life has been busy.

Seated millies w/u’s then 225x4 2 sets here!!!This is a PR of sorts. Best I have done since eary 07 due to surgery.

hang cleans 135x5x3

standing millies 115x10x5 supersetted cross-country rows 75x15x5

bbell curls 115x5x5

Feel good.

Lower back feeling alot better as of late…
