Town Hall with Obama

The AARP has announced they support no bill. AARP is backing away from this, expect some information to come up about this bill over the next couple of days.

I didn’t see the whole thing, but my favorite part was when he said, “Medicare works right.”

He didn’t say that. He said there are problems with that system and it is quickly becoming unsustainable. When it comes to it’s ability to provide care however, works just as well if not better than most options offered to elderly patients.

Btw, if it means anything to you, the AMA and the AARP endorse Obama’s plan.
The AMA is not doctors, only 20% belong btw.

Guys,

Does this mean when I get my own insurance in a year (currently covered by parents), I will HAVE to buy crappy public insurance? Fuck my life.

He said today and many times before, if you like your current insurance you can keep your insurance.

I am covered by my parents insurance until I am 23 I believe. I’ll have no insurance after that.

Yeah, I am in the same boat man. No way I could afford anything available right now.
Yes you can, get a high deductible policy to cover you for any major expenses. you might pay 80-100$ or so a month for a 5-6K deductible. then pay for regular doctor bills. you’re covered for a disaster and paying less than what low deductible insurance costs.

Sorry, typed it late last night and made some typos.

Wait, so you’re just a kid – who doesn’t even pay for his own insurance – trying to tell grown-ups like me what’s best for them? Are you fucking serious?

Also, I am curious what everyone’s current insurance plans are? Is anyone here uninsured?

I pay out of pocket about 400 a month for me and 2 kids. 2,500 deductable on major items with 15 dollar cr co pay. $15/30 drugs. My employer already pays about 50%. My policy is about 800 a month total.

Today Individual Insurance policies for youngsters 18-27 is about 80-120 per month depending on what you choose and history. A 20 something kid would pay about 80-120 a month plus a 20 buck co pay for your doctor visits, 200 bucks for hospital visits, and 15-30 dollar prescription coverage.

Not too bad.
Yep, I remember when I went off my parents insurance when I finished school 3 years ago. BCBS offered me an individual policy for $96 a month with the copays you listed. Pretty reasonable, I would say. I did not take it since I have it provided through work and I don’t technically pay for it, but I know it costs the company ~$175 for the exact same plan. Group health insurance has got to be one of the worst ideas ever thought up.

Explain to me how illegals have coverage that the working class don’t.

They go to the Emergency room and do not pay the bill, so what ever they owe is tacked on to the next paying customer
Because regular people always pay their bills? No matter who you are the ER will treat you.

No! Obama clearly stated today he is NOT in favor of a single payer system. He believes that transition is simply not appropriate for the U.S.

The purpose of health-care reform is to provide affordable health-care for all Americans. Our current system does not (46 Million uninsured). The purpose of the public option is to provide honest competition for insurance companies. The public option will not be subsidized by taxpayer money, and Obama has stated he would abandon any public option that did.

Think of FedEx and UPS, they compete with the Post Office, and they do VERY well.

I will give you the same advice I give the politicians. READ THE BILL!!!

this is one of the reasons, why I believe that there is a secret government, if elected officials aren’t reading bills what else aren’t they doing. How difficult would it be for a group of highly intelligent and cunning men to slowly take over the government. Given time
Nobody “takes over government”.

Corn producers take over corn legislation, pharma companies take over the FDA and so on.

Simple public choice theory.

For them it means millions if not billions, for the average voter it means a few cents or dollars so they care and fight hard and you don’t.

Okay

Okay, I think it’s important to understand that there are a few “plans” out right now, the one bill and nothing yet agreed upon in the senate. Personally, I’m waiting for the senate finance committee to come out with their plan before I invest a lot of time in reading through a bill. I doubt the final version will look much like the 1000+pg monster above.

Reform is necessary. Only a few refute this. Some reforms cost nothing or very little. Others cost a lot. As others have stated, as it stands now, those of us with insurance are paying for those who don’t (see Doc’s thread). No matter how we choose to pay for this, tough choices will have to be made.

By the way, why are you investing so much time in reading this particular bill? Chances are good the final version will be little like this one.

You may not “need” it, but if you end up in the emergency room, those of us with insurance will end up paying for it.

Nice, you’ll fit right in here.

I remember, thats the first thing you said when first posted here. Why ? do you dismiss it off hand
I hadn’t realized I had spoken to you before. Yeah, I dismiss conspiracies like this almost immediately, but I do enjoy reading about them. There are lots of conspiracy theorists on this board and I enjoy reading from almost all of them.

Regular people are GIVEN a bill.

They are still never denied treatment regardless of how much they owe. The assertion was that illegals receive coverage the middle class doesn’t.

Supporting a publicly funded option is telling everyone what’s best for them.

Because what the President is proposing allows you to:

a.) Keep your current insurance if you want to.

b.) Choose between a public option and a variety of private ones.

I think it’s kind of bullshit that I am not allowed to partake in the discussion because I am not a ‘grown-up’ at 22.

But no choice about paying for a public option and we’d be absolutely losing freedom choice if mandates are part of the final bill. It is allowing for a choice between preselected plans with no choice about funding the public one.

Agreed. To a large part mandates are why health insurance costs as much as it does now.

I also love the part where we’re all saying, “ZOMG THEY’RE GOING TO SOCIALIZE HEALTH CARE!” Last I looked the .gov puts in about 60 cents to every dollar spent in health care. We socialized health care long ago. Hell, I half want this to pass so that way we can stop fooling ourselves into thinking we aren’t a socialist nation.

Oh, you can join in the discussion all you want. But now I know you have zero real-life experience with any of this.
