Tough Mudder Footwear Thread

I don’t think the Army will allow vibrams. They were very specific when I went to basic training. In fact, I bought running shoes before I went and I think mine were ok, but they forced a lot of people to buy new ones on base…

I mirror what usmccds423 says. You don’t do a lot of running in boots unless you are sprinting around during combat training or got into trouble for some reason when in uniform. [/quote]

You guys had to take your own shoes? They issued all of us a pair New Balance shoes, which came out of our pay along with all other uniform items.

It was on our “suggested preparation list” given to me by my recruiter. I was in DEP (I signed my contract in January 2001, my Senior year of high school.)

I’m a former boy scout, so you know, BE PREPARED. lol.

When we got there, they gave us like a $300 prepaid card or something like that, which came out of our paycheck (a whopping $900 every 2 weeks lol). We were given a basic amount of items and we were forced to buy additional items. So we were given like 2 sets of PT gear and we needed to buy 2 more sets, etc.

Ya, I was in the DEP too, but we were told not to take anything except the clothes on our back. It’s funny how the different branches work.

We also had a “smart card” pre-load with a certain amount and had to buy a shit ton of stuff. Actually, it was very socialistic in nature. We got a list of personal items we had to buy and a list of items for the platoon. I think I had to buy like 10 roles of TP and an iron or something.

Gotta agree with Derek.

I ran with Vibrams during a mud run, and if you are going over rocks, it feels like running over nails.

I also found that my toes were sliding in and out of the toe compartments in the Vibrams, so my feet were literally slipping and sliding with the footwear itself.

I second the suggestion of using some beat up old shoes.

I also recommend taking out contact lenses before the run, unless you like being an idiot like me and getting a blast of muddy water splashed in my face making me essentially blind.
