I do love how the end of the world isn’t that infrequent. Gives us plenty of opportunities to throw themed parties.

Some experts on the Mayan calendar say that the Mayan date 13.00.00.00.00 falls on the 23rd, not on the 21st. Although I have my own reasons to believe that they would have set up the calendar to make it fall on the 21st, there are still some valid arguments in favor of the 23rd (I’m talking about real experts here, not the various charlatans and hoaxers – none of the real experts believe that there is a link between the round-figure date and any “event” linked to the Big 2012 Hoax).”

WTF…

So, in retrospect –

Which apocalypse was a bigger deal, at the time? 2012? Or y2k (including both Nostradamus aspects, and computer bug aspects)?

I’m voting y2k, just because a whole assload of money was spent on it (I’m still curious to see an actual breakdown of the economic impact of all that money being spent). Also, I think a lot more ‘real’ people were concerned about y2k – that is, many of the people worried about y2k were not just the latest versions of the same fringe types that worry about every apocalypse.

Though 2012 did have a Roland Emmerich/John Cusack movie. That counts for a lot.

Cool…it’s like Hanukkah.

No way dude. This one was enormous. There have been people stockpiling weapons and food for several years and even having high tech underground bunkers built and installed with cbn air filters, water systems and every other gizmo imaginable to try to assuage their paranoia.

Now they’re going to have to figure out another reason to have all of that stuff, lest they look like some kind of weirdo.

We had the same thing with y2k – especially because that was also during the tail end of the big American Militia fad, and also, the preppers for y2k included computer geeks (and plents of folks who claimed to be computer geeks to be taken more seriously) and people who were otherwise ‘calm’ urban professionals. You also had some of the fringe Christians panicking about the millinium, and the Nostradamus crew.

And again – what actual governments and multi-national corporations spent billions on 2012?

You’re probably right then. I was considering large individual spending, rather than some of those giant lumps of dough that gov.s and corporations were throwing at the Y2K thing.
