You mention tom petty in the ‘nearly’ category. I think you have a point.
What do you mean? Do you like or dislike Petty? Tom Petty is in my top three for bands. He has so many excellent songs but I don’t think any single song of his belongs in my top ten. Refugee, breakdown and Free fallin are probably in my top twenty. I am constantly changing what I’m listening to so it’s hard to pick just ten. [/quote]
Sorry about the confusion, i mean that I like Tom Petty, i’m not tring to be sarcastic.
Wow, these lists are always so hard, so i’ll just name off a few songs by some of my favorit artists.

This would be my list as well!
I play Civil War ALL THE TIME! Love that song! Break on thru is a must. SHIT, anything by Led Zeppelin. And I would throw in “Garden Party” by Rick Nelson. Awesome song, the lyrics are awesome, everything to Dylan, Hughes, Yoko & Lennon & Chuck Berry.
The best line from that song is “If memories were all I sang, I’d rather drive a truck”. Well said!
But it also makes you realize why people at places like “VH-I” will a) make the categories more specific (e.g. rock, soul, “The 80’s” etc) b) base it on something (like total sales) and c) get a good cross-section of opinions.
(Speaking if “VH-1”; how in the world was Pat Benetar left off either the “Top Songs” or “Top Artist” of the 80’s list??? Go figure!)
I figured that each decade must have its best, so I tried to pick some that were representative of the best for each time period and that bring me back in time when I hear them.
Blowing in The Wind - Bob Dylan
The End - The Doors
Deja Vu - Crosby Stills Nash & Young
The Message - Grand Master Flash
Bohemian Rhapsody - Queen
Love Will Tear Us Apart - Joy Division
Shout - Tears for Fears
How Soon Is Now - The Smiths
Fight For Your Right To Party - Beastie Boys
Heart Shaped Box - Nirvana
Folsom Prison Blues - Johnny Cash
Boy Named Sue - Johnny Cash
Sunday Morning Sidewalk - Kris Kristofferson
So Caught Up in You - .38 Special
Sweet Home Alabama - Skynyrd
Pride and Joy - SRV
I agree with most of the songs already posted, but here are a few of my own selections…
Springsteen - Brilliant Disguise
Smokey Robinson - Tracks of my tears
Pearl Jam - Man of the hour
Dylan - Like a Rolling Stone
~Sadly in this day and age you really will not hear most of the good music out there on radio or MTV. If anyone wants to hear some really great music try The Arcade Fire, “Funeral”!
Since I am a little closer to being over the hill than many of you… I use the recomendations in these threads to find good metal stuff for my MP3 player.
I found it interesting that most of the early posts in this thread listed older stuff.
My list, off the top of my head looks like this.
Baba O’Reiley - Who
Black Dog - Led Zeppelin
Rock N Roll - Led Zeppelin
Machine Head ALBUM - Deep Purple
Too Many to list - AC / DC
Too Hard to pick - Ramones
Never Mind the Bollocks ALBUM - Sex Pistols
