How’s this for old school, the first I heard of Metallica I was reading a Hit Parader in the eight grade 82/83 time frame(anyone remember those, do they still circulate?).

And in the very back pages with all the adds there was, I think it was Metal Militia, an independent label add with bands like Metallica, Slayer, Exodus, on it. Kill em All and Ride the Lighting were advertised.

Small ad in the back of the mag didn’t really pay attention at the time other then thinking the Kill em All cover was pretty brutal. At that time no one really heard of em unless you were a hardcore dirty metal head.

Most kids were listening to Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Def Lepperd. The next year, my freshmen year in High school an older Metal Head dude in my art class lent me, get this, his Ride The Lighting and Kill em All albums.

I took em home and threw em on the turntable (yes, I had a record player) and thus began my introduction to thrash metal and I loved it. After that the it was Metallica, then Slayer, and other thrash bands that dominated my playlist.

Damn, where have the years gone?

MY mom
yes my MOM was a metallica fan in the start.
you want old school.
I started listening to them because my mom was back in the begining. I dont really remember starting to listen to metallica,I just can’t remember NOT listening to them

she has a Kill Em All album around here someplace on vinyl still.
I had her listen to the new album and she told me Hmm not bad, sounds like there back on the right track after there little mishap with the 90s.

shes 50 and a fan for 20 some odd years
she raised a 30 year old fan which is me.
what funny is we are both Megadeth fans as well,
and we both like Diamond Head and if you know aanything about metallica you can make the connection with Diamond Head from the 70s

hmmm Ride the Lighting or Lightning to the Nations
which came first.
helpless?
how about Am I Evil?

the Years? they are flying by arent they.

in no particular order

disposable heroes
creeping death
four horsemen
dyers eve
trapped under ice

I like a lot of the Binge and Purge music better than some of their studio stuff…well, way better. Here’s my favorites in no particular order:

One (live)
For Whom the Bell Tolls (live)
Whiplash (studio)
Fade to Black (studio)
Creeping death (DEFINITELY LIVE)

This should really be a top 10 thread…

In no order:

Seek and Destroy - the early live versions are the best

Harvester of Sorrow - Anyone see the early 90s Moscow live version? It is on the video, “A year and half in the life of Metallica”.

One

The God that Failed - There is a youtube video where James explains the background and motivations for him to write this song. After hearing this song all those years and seeing this interview, it makes the song rather powerful to me.

Damage Inc.

Honorable Mention: Fight Fire with Fire

Dustin

ONE,( it unleashes some darkness in me
Blackend, what a balllod
sanatarium, been there done that.
HARVESTOR of SORROW! nothing got me to my pr more than this song
For Whom the bell tolls

How old do you have to be to like the songs the OP mentioned? I am in my middle 30’s and I like The Unforgiven II, The Memory Remains, No Leaf Clover, etc. better than the old stuff. No matter what Metallica you like better, they still write better material than anyone else out there IMO.

At what point where you introduced to Metallica? What did you listen to before you heard Metallica? Sure you can like what ever you want to like but Metallica was started as a metal band and those of us who are metal heads and grew up on the original Metallica know the first 4 albums where among the best metal records ever written, everything after that was soft, pop metal, top 40 sell out music. I’m not saying I don’t like some of those songs the OP mentioned but when it comes to the best Metallica they aren’t in the top 30 songs.

My memories started when I was living In LA at 8 years , and my babysitter was a hard core metal up your ass guy. He was the older kid from down the street and he handed me the kill em all album. I remember playing it on mylittle cassette tape, and feeling like this was dangerously strong music.

AS I grew with it, Watching HEADBANGERS BALL was badass on sat night, watching the one song. Still pumps me up to this day,

kill em all , ride the lighting, Masters of puppets, and justice for all

are like the base puzzle of metal music in perfect stride. Thats as good as it will ever be, THE BLACK ALBUM WAS a sellout, and everything after was just trying to hard, and the NEW album SUCKS !

four horse man
phantom lord
battery
seek and destroy
am i evil?

Battery
King Nothing
I Disappear
Nothing Else Matters
Until It Sleeps

I suppose I will get in on this since Metallica is my favorite band.

…And Justice for All
One
Blackened
Bleeding Me
The Unforgiven III (there is something about this song I really really love but give it a little while and it might change)

Blackened
Battery
Harvester of Sorrow
And Justice for All
Seek and Destroy

I was just going to post that given how few people have mentioned this as one of their top 5, maybe i ought to add it to my “underrated” list. And yeah, studio is good, but definitely the live version, especially on binge and purge

Ever heard the live version of htis? if not see if you can find it. Seriously frigging HEAVY when the bass doesnt get mixed out

The version I mentioned.

Yeah, I’ll have to look for it. That song has a nice bass-line.

Dustin

Old Metallica:
Harvester of sorrow
trapped under ice
motorbreath
disposable heroes
sanitarium

(then MOP, etc)

New Metallica:
The unforgiven
The unforgiven II
The unforgiven III
No Leaf Clover
Outlaw Torn

(then the unnamed feeling, hero of the day, until it sleeps, etc)

edit: I’m seeing them this winter.

  1. To Live Is to Die (surprised it hasn’t been mentioned yet)

  2. Battery

  3. Everything else . . .

In no order

Motorbreath
Green Hell
Creeping Death
Battery
Helpless or trapped under ice

Off the top of my head…I could sub all those songs for others and still be happy. Too many good tunes…

No disrespect husker but how old are you? All of those songs are the reason Metallica has sucked for the last 10 years, especially enter sellout, I mean sandman.

A better list would be:

  1. Master of Puppets
  2. Fade to Black
  3. Welcome home (sanatarium)
  4. Orion
  5. Seek and Destroy

You are about the same age as my brother and he likes gay Metallica better too.

Hey, I would like to think that there is no “gay” Metallica. How about “slightly more sissy?”

I don’t know, after watching SKoM I think Lars could easily swing both ways. Lets not even start with Kirk.

It was kind of surreal when Dave Mustaine was talking to Lars, about how upset he was when he got kicked out of Metallica… It was a WTF moment for me.[/quote]

Yeah, that part I thought was a little strange. Dave doesn’t seem like the kind of guy to forgive and forget, but I didn’t think he would be upset over it. Not that I know him personally, he just comes off as a selfish prick that doesn’t give a shit about anything.

Touche! That is Cliff Burton’s voice you hear during that song!!

Very underrated song!
