it occured to me today that i might be getting to much water. If that is possible… but hear me out…i weight 145 at 7%bf and am drinking between 80-85ounces of water a day. One of the things water does is clear out your system right? So therefor, if i was gettin in a good amount of protien powder a day but then washing it out of my system by getting to much water, i wouldnt be getting benifits out of the protin other than that short period of time its in my body…I could be completly wrong, but it would make sence to my that the less water you got, the more potent the protien powder would be…
First of all, I doubt you’re drinking too much water. Most people on here probably drink a gallon a day, and that’s reasonable.
Water is necessary for protein digestion and absorbtion.
If protein is getting “washed out” as you say, and by this I can assume you mean when you urinate, you could get a urinalysis to determine if there is protein in your urine. It will most likely be negative unless you have some sort of renal disorder.
I’m not an expert, but I would think that water would not wash out the protein. The water and the protein have nothing to do with each other. The body uses what it needs and the body will use the protein and discard any excess protein. To me it does not make sense that drinking water a lot washes out the protein to the extent that you should be worried about. Before the water turns to pee and ‘washes’ the system out, it would use the protein it would need before ‘washing’ out the protein.
Why so much water man? You really don’t need that much if your eating healthy. A lot of fruits and vegetables contain water so its not that necessary to drink that much.
80-85 oz really isn’t that much, and is for sure not enough to “wash away” your protein. stick with that amount of water, or even more to stay hydrated, and don’t worry about losing the protein you eat because of it, it’s just not going to happen.
That’s like 5 glasses a day (pints), which I would think would be leaving you DEHYDRATED.
Ya know that muscle is predominantly made of water? Maybe that’s just what them muscles could use, extra water.
Besides, it’s practically free. I shoot for about a gallon a day of Distilled water since it’s the cleanest water that money can buy (or that we can make in our basement). Make sure the H20 is clean, and drink more of it!
According to JB, you should drink at least half your bodyweight in ounces each day just for normal functioning. So, if you weigh 145lbs, you need a good 70-75 ounces of water just to survive and function properly. Add exercise, climate and other factors, and you could easily need another 32-64 ounces on top of that.
I drink two 50 ounce bottles of water just during work. After work, I drink at least another 32-64 ounces on top of that, especially if it’s a training day. And I’m about 160lbs (5’4", ~15-18%).
Even on the weekends, I strive for at least a gallon a day or more.
You’re not drinking too much by any means. It’s pretty hard to get too much water, and there’s really no practical dangers even to drinking a lot. The only one that comes to mind is hyponotremia (sp ?) which can adversely effect your mineral balance. But this is really only a factor with intense endurance exercise like a marathon where you’re sweating heavily if you’re only consuming massive amounts of water rather than something like gatorade with salt and electrolytes.
Why are you drinking distilled water? The only time that distilled water might be appropriate is pre-competition when you’re severely limiting sodium intake.
Seriously, the last thing any of us should worry about is drinking too much water. Sure, if you are chugging 3 gallons a day, and are spending two hours doing cardio, you might worry about dangerously low sodium levels, but for those of us who eat every two or three hours and train for an hour or so, its not an issue.
First of all, water helps in the digestive process, so your GI system is happier. Secondly, it helps flush out toxins which are released through fat burning and muscle breakdown. Thirdly, it makes you piss every couple of hours…oh wait, that’s not so much fun, but its better than pissing three times a day and having it be dark yellow and stinky.
Anyhow, dehydration is WAY more detrimental than overdoing the hydration. So keep drinking!

Don’t you think peeing every few hours is excessive and possibly detrimental. I know moderation is hard to grasp for people on here, I know I used to have a problem with it. But, I just don’t drink a shit ton of water anymore because it doesn’t make sense to me. Think about it.

I pee at least every hour sometimes more. Really, just take a look at your pee, if it’s slightly yellow you’re ok, but the darker it gets the more dehydrated you are.

What would be detrimental about it? And how would water deprive your body of vitamins, minerals, or anything else? No need to ‘force-feed’ yourself water. But people who only drink when they are thirsty are not drinking enough. Once you are thirsty, you have been dehydrated for awhile.

It can flush out electrolytes and the water-soluble vitamins.
