Maybe you should expand your vocabulary so you can stop using “slam” as your primary descriptor. When somebody says slam I hear “high velocity with a sudden stop”. So are you only slamming your weights a little? Is that like being a little gay, a little pregnant, or a little dead?
And for everybody who says its OK to slam the weights just because you are on a platform and using bumper plates, I call BULLSHIT. If you pick it up then you should put it down the same way.
The only time slamming/dropping weights is acceptabble:
-
In a competition where you are only required to lift the weights
-
Escape from a bad snatch or bad clean
-
Escape from an unbalanced overhead squat or jerk/press
If someone calls you out for dropping/slamming weights then apologize for being an inconsiderate douchebag. I mean have some respect for the place you train in. You are using someone else’s equipment in someone else’s facility, so just show some fucking respect for the gym. Next make a change so you can stop being such a noisy douchebag.
Re-chalk your hands, aim for one less rep, maybe change exercises, or check your damn ego, do something different. Then go back to lifting. You can do some solid, heavy lifting without drawing negative attention to yourself. You might go so far as to earn the respect of the gym’s staff and members.[/quote]
Respect, now there’s a word. Bravo. Well said.
The other day I spoke to someone at the gym I go to. Now this guy was not only content with dropping 40lbs dumbbells (40lbs!!!) after a set but was happy to actually pick them up from the rack, step over to the bench he was using, and DROP THEM into place! Couldnt even bend his scrawny ass over!
So I get up and go over and said something like y’know, when you drop weights like that they get loose and eventually break, its really not good for them, to which he says oh I didnt think I was dropping them that hard, to which I thought after going back to my bench shit fool what do you mean dropping them that hard, youre dropping them period. Afterwhich he pretty much proceeded like nothing was said.
I make it a point of making the slightest, ever so slightest clack when putting down after a set (and thats on a metal floor) and on the final set, with DBs, I dont put them down but spring up from the bench after the final rep and walk them over to the rack.
I notice I get a great, overall upper-body pump in the process, and it makes me feel stronger because at no time does the weight control me, I control what happens to the weight. When I gently return the weight to the floor before the final set I notice I get a nice burn in my forearms, which, again, is what Im there for.
