I feel the New International Version is the best basic translation to read and study
As for the using of the King James Version,I like the flow of the classic expression of the English language.
As for Tozer,in my opinion, one of the best tools in Gods arsenal.Check out www3.calvarychapel.com and search Tozer.Scroll down to "Pursuit of God"and check out his writings. They are fuel for the soul.
I don’t know if I would use the NIV for study. It is a paraphrase version. For study I would use a word for word translation.
I found an incorrect translation in my New King James today that finally has me convinced to switch to Old King James. I went to biblegateway.com and looked up the passage in question in a whole bunch of translations, and not only did every version other than the King James translate the word wrong, most even differed from each other in translation. I think that is kind of scary.
Towzer looks good, but for my extra Biblical reading (which I try to limit anyway) I really enjoy the Puritans and the Reformers. I am glad that you found a teacher that you enjoy though.

It does make it difficult to support a literal interpreation doesn’t it, especially given how many translations and compilations have taken place…

I would love to be able to read Greek and Hebrew and understand the nuances of the those languages. Sometimes during sermons a verse will get translated using the hebrew or the greek word and it seems to give more clarity, power or insight.
