TM79's Training Journal

It’s a great analogy.

I don’t know if you listen to podcasts or not, Peter Attia has a really good podcast called the Drive. He put out a podcast with a couple other Drs. on January 3rd that is really good that talks about Omicron.

Well, two days ago I thought I was out of the woods and then yesterday hit like a ton of bricks. Temp went back up slightly and things transitioned to a head cold. I wasn’t really aware of that “phase” until speaking with a few people yesterday. Evidently it is pretty common. A few days of flu, followed by a few days of head cold. Oh well, looks like we will be stuck in the house even longer. My 2-year old son is in the thick of it and it is pretty rough. Some kids just act like nothing is wrong when they’re sick. Not him. :grimacing: Looks like training this week is not happening. We are supposed to get an ice storm Friday night and Saturday so that will only add to the cabin fever. Such is life…

Rest up Trent. After the first day of feeling awful the next day does feel like you have got it beat, I actually told 2 of my friends that I thought I had it beat in a day, and almost went out and blew the leaves off my yard with my backpack blower. I was glad I didn’t do that the following day, as like you said, it comes back as a pretty good cold.

Good luck with cabin fever. I used it to rearrange my garage. LoL

Thanks Shane. Yeah, this is a sneaky bastard of a virus. The head cold phase definitely came out of left field. Looking forward to this being over with. I like the idea of getting some house work done, but doubt my wife would want me to. We are usually just trading watching the kids so that the other can rest or do something. Our next door neighbors also have covid. This afternoon we were all out in the backyard together and the kids were playing through the fence. It was kind of cool having someone else going through it and it doesn’t matter if the kids play together during this because they all have it. (If the CDC heard about that… :exploding_head:)

Yep. It should be over soon enough. Good to hear the kids are able to get out and play. I doubt the CDC would know what to say. Wouldn’t matter, they would change their position the next day. :joy:

Little update here. The head cold rages on and has made my cough worse. The cough sounds pretty gnarly at this point. It’s not an out of control cough. It just sounds bad when I cough. I have been sleeping from 10:00PM to 8:00AM every day this week. I still hope to be able to start training next week, but need this cold to start making its way out. I wouldn’t train really hard with the cough anyway, but it would be nice to start doing something. In the middle of an ice storm right now so we will continue to sit in the house for day 9 tomorrow.

You probably need a steroid to break some of it up so you can cough it up. I ended up getting one at the end.

Depending on how easy it is to get into to see your Dr, mine was booked out, a good option is CVS doc in the boxes. A lot of them will do telehealth visits with your phone or computer. This can be really convenient way to get medicine to treat while waiting to get into your Dr.

My brother just did this on Monday because his Dr’s first appointment was Friday. Monday he did telehealth and got an inhaler and some kind of pearls to help with his cough. He was able to get meds for treatment and keep his Dr appointment so they could listen to his lungs etc on Friday. If he had to wait until Friday to get meds he would have been miserable or worse.

Sorry to hear about the ice storm. It sounds like you guys are getting hit harder than we are with winter storms.

Thanks Shane. I don’t even have a doctor here yet so I’m just trying to get in and see whoever I can. There is a good urgent care down the street that I might try if I need to. Overall, I’m not in that much discomfort. It’s just something to do for the sake of being thorough. Hopefully I’m not screwing myself out here huffing in all of this cold air…

LISS: 1 Mile, 24:00, 230 Cals

Comments: Took the last 9 days off with covid. At this point, it feels like the head cold is on the way out as I have just a slight runny nose. My cough is definitely still there so I am just taking it easy and trying to get my body moving again. I hate that it is the dead of winter and the only place I have to train is an ice-cold garage. Probably not an ideal option for my cough… I’m hoping to get some moderate exercise in this week to hopefully get back into it next week.

Just did a mile of LISS this morning at 2.5 mph (typically I do 3 mph). It is 32 degrees outside so it is probably 10 degrees warmer in here, but still cold. Hopefully this doesn’t screw me over…

I think it is probably good to get in the garage and walk and move around. Bundle up. Do you have a space heater? I got one for my garage but it really doesn’t work that great. If you put it close to where you are working out it does help a little though.

Thanks Shane. Yeah, that’s what I thought too. I need to get moving. It’s worth the risk. I think I trashed the space heater before we moved out of our old house. In our old house the ancient old air handler was in the garage. It had a million holes in it so it did a great job of heating our garage, or at least making it bearable. The new garage is actually vented to the outside so it is damned cold in there. Usually the cold doesn’t bother me but I don’t want to make the cough any worse.

Nice work Trent. 33 minutes of liss on the Tibetan Treadmill. Hope you bundled up.

Ha ha, thanks Shane. Nah, I just wore the usual sweat pants and hoodie. You warm up some after you get moving…

Comments: The scale is in the master bath and I’m still sleeping in the guest room until I can kick this head cold. So, no weigh in. Wanted to do something besides walk on the treadmill so I did a metcon this morning. Felt good to move some iron around. I used Chicken Little’s straps trick on the front squats and that was a big help. Thanks again for sharing that bit of information. Have a good day!

That is a solid looking metcon. Good idea to put that head cold into submission with a little bit of iron and a good sweat. Hopefully that will send it well on its way!

Comments: Finally cranked the speed back up to 3 mph. I just walked on the treadmill and did work the whole time. It is definitely cold out here this morning and my cough sounds pretty bad. I could really use one of our classic runs of warm weather…

LISS: 1.5 Miles, 32:00, 330 Cals

Comments: Doing great on the weight loss. I’m using Biden’s method of evaluating success. Either don’t get on the scale or ignore what it says/lie about it. Then just tell everyone you are doing a great job. Life sure is easier once you are no longer bound to quantifiable results and honesty. (Sorry, not trying to hate on anyone. Some analogies are too good not to share) :joy:

Just hit some stretching/mobility for 15 minutes followed by some LISS. I definitely feel like being out here in the cold is pro-longing my recovery. I’m usually doing pretty well until I get out here and then I start blowing my nose and coughing up some gnarly stuff. I feel fairly decent but definitely have a chest infection. Sure wish this would go away. I may rest all weekend as I have done at least some light conditioning every day this week. I am abandoning the cycle that I started a few weeks ago and will just start a new one when I feel like I am finally able to.

LoL. Great analogy on the weight loss.

If you feel like working out is hampering your recovery you should probably take it easy and recover. No need to add more stress to an already stressed system.

Ha ha, thanks. That popped into my head and I laughed out loud. Yeah, I feel like if it were warm out it wouldn’t be as bad, but once I get out in the cold and start huffing and puffing it just kills me. The curse of the garage gym I guess…
