Iām working with the Senior Estimator, performing misc metal and structural steel takeoffs. He used to be a welder/erector and superintendent, heās a really sharp guy. There are only two estimators in the entire company, we are small, but mighty (not necessarily, itās a division of a larger steel subcontractor). The projects are mostly data centers, the company wins a lot of work with the Top Engineering News Record General Contractors.
I would really love to hear your opinion on working at a top ENR General Contractor and subcontractor.
Iāve played around with the idea of working at a MEP sub. Iāve learned in class that MEP systems are typically 45% of the contract value for a project. Theoretically, a general contractor wouldnāt let an entry level project engineer handle those divisionsā¦.so you knowā¦ why not dive head first into that.
Iām really considering a lot of factors with my first career tbh. It also seems like none of these companies teach or trainā¦hence why Iām aggressive with practical experience while in school.
Itās really kind of a disservice if I were to be at a company thatās a cesspool of young people like me, given if I were to start with the construction manager route.
Btw Iāve done a little more research on trades, unfortunately thereās too much risk involved considering student loan. Itās a great idea once I pay it offā¦.hence why Iām trying to get a job in NJ, but itās such a desert for building constructionā¦I donāt care about roads lol.
Soak up what you can from this seasoned vet. I had a superintendent take my under his wing on my first project and I learned so much from him. Will you get any time in the field watching them weld and erect the steel? Try to get as much time on site as possible even if its not part of your job. Seeing things on blue prints is one thing, but watching it done in the field will sharpen your understanding.

Youāre not far off. Depending on the type of project MEP is typically heavily weighted in the contract value. Certainly higher than carpentry and finishes. Site development is usually my highest with the MEP trades to follow.
Honestly youāre spot on. I didnāt even know how to read blueprints out of college. Youāll learn far more with practical experience than you will at school. Obviously depending on your career path a degree or certification in your field could go a long way still.
Yeah I was never interested in municipal civil work either. Road work etcā¦ boring to me. I donāt really like working with government contracts either. I did that for a bit when I first started and it was a not a great experience. However there are ways to milk/bilk the system yet its just not my style. Speaking of building construction the Southeast, especially here in FL, is still booming!
Last spring, I would go out onto the different sites with one of the Senior Project Managers every Tuesday morning. I would wake up at 4 am, head to the office, and then weāll drive down together to Northern Virginia which was like an hour or so away.
We would pull up to various field trailer offices to solve field issues or deliver tools/hardware to our field guys.
Thanks for mentioning that I will definitely be more aggressive with that. I also donāt know why I havenāt visited our fabrication shop as well. The head of our fabrication shop is a living database of anything made of steel We also literally put up entire staircases in there lol.
Oh and heās not the only veteran super there. Our safety guy used to work at the general contractor I interned with this summer. He was a superintendent there for 20 years, but left because of the awful work-life balance. Heās now able to see his kid more and go mountain biking.
He keeps telling me to run for the hills and to not work at that general contractor.
That may actually happen though, Iāve heard nothing from the New Jersey office. Yesterday I reached back out to the VP I worked with this summer to see if thereās still an opportunityā¦and crickets sooo far
Also, one of our project managers is a certified welding inspector (which I guess means they spent their whole life welding and had to take a specialized test). He gave a really good presentation on like every type of weld at a lunch and learn. The head of the fab shop is also a cwi and was trained to take over a competitor, but the owner at that time was a control freak so it never happened.
Iām still trying to figure that out, Iām kind of an open book. Tbh I would literally try everything out. Here are things Iāve heard from the successful old guys:

Itās been almost two weeks since Iāve trained. Iām adjusting to a more hellacious schedule so Iāll figure it out eventually. Iāll simply spread my junk volume out moreā¦ or cut stuff out.
The workload in my classes is a WHOLE lot more and my estimating job takes a lot of time (40 hrs a week). Also, student org president stuff too.
I just recently started an internship/job in commercial real estate, which is absolutely awesome.
Thereās a huge learning portion to it which is essentially a class being taught by this business owner dude, but yk less time off my schedule.
If thereās anything else I wanted to try, it would definitely be a non-union trade/labor or some kind of bookkeeping, accounting, or finance internship/job.
