Tipping - Good Idea or Bad Idea

Yes. At the very least a dollar.

Just move the decimal over to the left one place, thats 10%, double that for 20% add 1/2 of the 10% for 15%.
SEE!!! that is the problem. I realize they get paid less and get taxed on my bill. Just pay them more and eliminate the 8% tax and I would like it so much more.

You have never worked in the restaurant business before have you. Serving/bartending/barbacking is a DIFFCULT job. They get paid below minimum wage. So when you don’t tip you are saying your job is worth less than 9 dollars an HOUR. That simply isn’t true. “Restauranting” is definitely worth at least 20 dollars an hour if not 30 or more.

In North America it is implicit in the bill that you will add 15% if you are happy with the service. To raise the amount paid to server the owner of a restaurant would either need to cut into his bottom line or raise the price of food significantly. It is a inefficiency and waste added to a system built on simplicity to overcome the greed and stinginess of rude customers.

You really should not go out if you cannot afford to tip a server or bartender. I’ll generally tip 20%+ per service, even if the service is poor, unless I can determine the fault lies not in the situation, the infastructure, or the kitchen but out of pure negligence. Then I’ll still tip 10%.
Ah see… you should really not say, “You really should not go out if you cannot afford to tip…”

It really has nothing to do with the evening seeing as how it is OPTIONAL.

I don’t have to pay.

I have worked really hard jobs on a salary. I didn’t get a tip if I worked extra hours and my work actually affected lives, not your meal.

Don’t be a Bitter Betty. I posted that I would be happy to pay more for my meal if the wait staff earned a living wage. See… pay more… wait staff gets more… no tip.

I hate having to tip washroom attendants in nightclubs. If you wash your hands after you do your business you really have no choice.

After you’ve finished expelling urine/faeces they’ll turn on the faucet for you, squirt some soap into your hands, then hand you a towel. It’s gotten to the point where I just bring a mini bottle of hand sanitizer with me whenever I go out.

Also what’s the deal with the tip jar for coat check girls? Why do they even have a tip jar out? I walked up to you, handed you my coat and gave you the money. Should I tip you just to make sure you don’t lose my coat?
OctoberGirl wrote:
Hell no.

It took a waitress FOREVER to wait on us, refill our drinks (when she finally got around to taking our order) bring the food (it was luke warm) and the check.

It was not busy and she didn’t apologize once for the shitty service.

I left her a penny.

Not losing your coat should be part of the job, tip or no tip. Maybe they do extra special coat watching if you tip them.

X2

A few extra dollars won’t break me, but it sure could make the night better for a waiter/waitress.

Besides, when you tip well, next time you’re a customer there, the waiter/waitress is sure to go the extra mile for you. One good turn deserves another.

Oooohhhh My dad did that once when I was a kid and the waitress was bad. She called him Honey and spilled on my mom. He left her a penny so she would know he hadn’t forgot to leave her a tip.

That’s inefficient. And if it weren’t Then you’d be paying the same amount you should be now. So that’s irrelevant.

It is “optional” but you’re cheap if you don’t. No server deserves 8 dollars an hour.

As for how you feel about the “Service”. Keep in mind that restaurant/bar has a manager, barbacks, busboys and security. They ALL contribute to your night. When you tip a server approximately 20-30% of what they make is not theirs. They are collecting that money and redistrubting it to ALL deserving parties.

Did you not get beaten up? Did you get a glass? Ice? A cup? Did the bar open? Was your plate clean? Then you should be tipping SOMETHING because everyone besides that lazy manager did their job.

Wow guys. Coat again is HARD. 800 people come to a night club drunk off their asses and want their coats NOW. The coat check room is too small, in order to raise capacity, and this girl is harassed all night. She ALSO has to tip out the security who kept her from being assaulted or berated. Half the people lose their tickets, through no fault of hers. And she has to deal with EVERYONE at once at 11:45. and again at 1:55!

If she makes any small mistake it will be seen at screamed at. And they all cost over 200 dollars

Give her a fucking dollar bro!

What do you guys do when there’s a gratuity fee built into the bill? Some of my friends will leave nothing, while other friends (mostly the ones who’ve worked in the food service industry) will leave a full tip on top.

Personally if the service is really good, I’ll “upgrade” their tip by leaving an additional 5%,

Can I just point out that one of the points for tipping was that “you didn’t get beat up”…

man… can we please have Death Race for real?

Their livelihood isn’t dependant on tipping. They make 80 000, 60 000, 50 000 and 30 000 dollars a year. A server makes 10 000 unless you tip.

This is the reality they’ve been given, why punish? It will cost you the same either way.

I agree with you. If it costs the same either way, just pay them a living wage.

But see… I am an auditor at a casino. I see how much can be made in tips. I know why they will take less than a living wage. So stop the whining about working so hard and making so little. If that were the case there would not be a wage contingent upon tipping.

Instead, wait staff takes the gamble. They gamble they will make more than a standard wage with tips. That is your gamble and I should not have to play in it.

Wait staff should have a living wage no tipping.

But I know too many folks that make buck on a good night that won’t take a living wage, they want the gamble then whine if they make less.
