I can’t understand why you would feel this way when you KNOW a server at the top of their game is pullin’ in a big 30 G’s a year. That’s simply an obscene amount of money. THOSE are the people Obama should be going after and forcing to pay their fair share! THOSE are the folks causing us as a society to not be able to afford to pay our teachers well.

Hairdressers too! They are wealthy beyond words and DO NOT DESERVE A TIP. Fuckers!

Knock those affluent servers down a peg or two by undertipping them or not tipping at all. I mean, why be charitable to the rich? Gee fuckin whiz!
The fact there is this social stigma around not tipping at least x% is just as intrusive. Plus as I mentioned earlier posts, I dislike the incentives the tipping system creates for wait staff to maximize their tips.

Regardless of how much these people make, tipping is an intrusive custom.

Just to be clear I do tip, and I am not a bad tipper.

I only ask why tip when they could be paid a wage.

I worked retail at Toys R Us and had to put up with masturbaters, a crazy guy who was slashing the genital region of Barbie Dolls, and even was asked to look for a bomb. hahaha! no it was a very creepy guy sitting with the Giant Book of Dinosaurs open and upright on his lap. I didn’t know he was jerking off until I walked up to tell him he couldn’t be sitting on the shelves. He was doing it behind the book.

You would be surprised how many pervs go to Toys R Us and do freaky things.

I once started a clown porn thread and was surprised how much clown porn is out there.

I don’t have a problem with tipping. I do have a problem with waitresses expecting 15% when they don’t do shit. I mean the ones that take your order and then don’t show up till it’s time to collect the bill and the tip. I wish I could tip the foodrunners and bus boys separately.

I worked as a cook in a busy restaurant for 5 years so I know all the shit that’s involved in serving the customer their food properly and on time. I know it’s not waitresses fault when a cook forgets to put in an appetizer. It’s when I see her bullshitting with the bartenders or going out for a smoke when my drink is empty that pisses me off. Or when they don’t write the order down and then remember it wrong and fuck it up.

Anytime I have bad service I take it up with the manager. Most of the time, the take care of the situations.

Okay, the craziest thing in this post is that you’re Jewish. I dealt with similar things working for Victoria’s Secret. We had one guy who would call in (thankfully never came in) and ask what we had in black in 32AA or 32A and XS…and then ask if that was appropriate for his 12 y/o daughter’s birthday gift.
OctoberGirl wrote:
Really? This was the end of it?

Okay then I claim victory that tipping should be abolished!!! =)

I do kinda think the Crimson Lily’s post about taking extra tables or fewer tables was a better explanation of the whole tipping system then some of the others I read.

Also… Crimson Lily, do not serve my table if you are not feeling well. Gross to think of servers as being sick all over my food.

Still think tipping is stupid and unnecessary. Unique is unique until folks get tired of it.
Oh trust me, the second I would start feeling sick I’d find someone else to cover my shift. Last thing I’d want to be doing is walk around serving people hand and foot, plus, I wouldn’t want someone to mess with my food while they were sick, either.

I was more referring to headaches, tiredness, cramps, etc. All that fun stuff.

I’d just rather get the same amount of attention from wait staff as the middle aged white dude wearing suit.

THEN TIPPPPPPP! LOL Seriously, choose FIVE places that you really like. Go there regularly (preferably on the same nights). TIP WELL. If you’ve chosen halfway decent places, the bartender will have your drink waiting for you, “your” waiter will have your favorite appetizer in the oven already and eventually, the manager will start comping your desert and half your drinks (the half that the bartender even charged you for).

If you like the place, send your friends and clients there and TELL THEM. I ALWAYS tell my clients to you to XYZ restaurant and bar and to “just say that Brad sent you”. Do that for a few YEARS. You’ll DEFINITELY be treated better than the white guy with the suit.

You have to be smart about it. If you want free drinks, order shit that the bartenders can get away with giving you. Bottled/canned beer is counted, as is the $80 bottle of wine and red bull. Mixed drinks and beer on tap (not including top shelf)? Not so much… Believe me, bartenders WANT to give away drinks so they can get better tips - if you tip well and make it easy for them they will hook you up. I’ve had bar tabs that SHOULD have been more than $500 knocked down to $120 so I tipped $200 IN CASH. Don’t put that shit on your credit card where the bar manager can see it at the end of the night! And when a bartender really hooks you up, don’t give him/her forty bucks and think it’s even, tip AT LEAST half the amount he saved you. If you TRY to hook them up, they’ll go out of their way to hook YOU up. In EVERYTHING - I swear, I think I’ve nailed at least 50% of one of my favorite waitress’ friends! Seriously, it is SO win/win it’s not even funny!

Not even sure I have replied in this thread, but I would say 95% of the time I eat out we tip 20%. Someone has to really botch things or be super slow to get less than that.

I already said I tip, so how exactly am I cheap? Try again tip monkey.

lol - if you don’t like my “attitude” don’t read my posts. I said I’d prefer them getting higher wages+higher restaurant food prices over tipping and somehow you perceive this as an “attitude.”

We’ve already stated (essentially everyone in this thread who’s had any experience with the restaurant biz) that waiting tables is a job with a high turnover rate because you have to deal with shitty people.

Tipping gives them the incentive to stay with the job and work hard at it. If you pay them higher wages and no tips you’ll end up with worse service. No, the “we’ll just fire them because they should be working hard anyway” theory doesn’t work because not many people can do the job well and it’s not a particularly desirable job (the potential for tips or desperation is essentially the whole reason people take it).

If you can’t understand that…I give up.

And I’m saying your quality of service will depend on how the waiter/waitress perceives you. Do you think as guy in his early 20’s in regular clothing would receive the same level of service as a well dressed middle aged man (assuming the restaurant is at capacity)?

I would also say a guaranteed higher wage would lessen the turnover rate and lead to better experienced staff → better service.

therajraj

So basically your whole problem deals with the fact of your own age and insecurities? Because you are young and do not automatically demand the respect of servers like someone who is older, you want the whole system changed? Damn everybody else you are not getting your props.

Dude. Seriously, you have NO IDEA what you’re talking about. In what world does a GUARANTEED wage produce better results than a PERFORMANCE BASED wage? And why would you assume that a guy in his early 20’s in regular clothes would get better service than a well dressed middle aged man? Insecure much?

Why are you even COMPARING the two?

Let’s pretend for a minute that YOU are a waiter. You have two regular customers: one is an Indian guy with a bad attitude who breaks out the cell phone calculator when he pays the bill and gives you 14.999% and the other one is a middle aged guy who engages you and regularly leaves 20 - 25%. They both arrive at the same time. WHO’S ORDER DO YOU PUT IN FIRST?

^ Yea what AC said.
