Out damn standing, two DL weight PRs in one session.
Hard works pays off, who’d a thunk it?

Man, that really was a fast-off-the-floor PR. Huzzah ![]()
sneaks back into the lurker bushes
p.s. I don’t know if it’s possible for such a short stroll back to the camera, but I’d swear you were sauntering after that pull. ![]()
Jeez!
a millies PR and an awesome deads PR. Great start to the new year.
The turtle always wins the race. ![]()
Hallowed, I plan on accomplishing my gratitude goal by starting every run or lifting session with the thought, “I am damned lucky and grateful to be training today.” You know, like a mantra.
Spider, yep I’m still happy about the PR two days later. You ought to know how it feels, you strong thang, you.
Cal, there are only two places my wedding ring can be: on my finger or in its little ring holder on my dresser. I haven’t lost it in 21 years so that rule is working out!
Joe, hard work DOES pay off. But not in a linear fashion. For me, its two steps back (or more) and then a leap forward. That is why weight-based goals don’t work for me. SO much stepping back and working on weak points and form issues.
Kristoph, I think I very much was sauntering. I’m like that!
Frenchie, turtles do win the race and they are long-lived to boot. Live to lift another day is my motto!
Today was a running day and I did speed work. My street is about 400 meters long and my neighbors got treated to seeing:
1 x 200 (0:54), 1 x 400 (1:46), 1 x 600 (2:54) and 1 x 800 (3:50) today. Plus about 1.5 mile warmup and cooldown runs. I was happy with the paces and plan on doing speed work every Tuesday.
Oh, a ladder. Great job with the speed work. I need to pick a day for mine. I’m struggling.
Do you have any interests in duathlons?
Great work!! You’ve been so patient…CONGRATS!!!
Holy smokes Kimba-those DLs look EASY! Congratulations, your new approach is clearly working!
The speed work is impressive as well. You should be happy with those paces, they’re great!
I’m taking a page from your book on gratitude. Thanks for that post.
Nadia, thanks for the ladder encouragement. My “400 m.” street might be a few meters short but even adding some seconds to the pace times, I’m happy with them. No duathlons for me. I’m way too blind to race bicycles.
Betty, it does feel good to have patience be rewarded. My deadlift hasn’t really moved up for a long time and then WHAM!
lula, the deadlifts did feel easy. That was the weird thing! I honestly thought I’d mis-loaded the bar. ![]()
Wow
Kimba nice work!
and awesome PR!!!
see- tiny people do amazing things
I like all this running too.
while not spiritual- or anything close to religious
sometimes gratitude gives me a feeling of being blessed
Oh heck yes! Deadlifting PRs! Nice stuff! And it cracks me up thinking about you re-checking the weight because it felt light. Gotta love that.
And I’m totally digging the speed work! You have some really great times, Kimba!! I’m a bit jealous, actually. Lol! I’ve been doing long sprints too lately. They’re so much fun. Very puke-tastic!
And I just wanted to say, your most recent post in my log got a little fire burning under my ass. Thanks for that! It was just what I needed to hear at just the right time ![]()
DL PR! Nice!
Keep hitting those GMs.
kmc, tiny FTW! Gratitude is self-perpetuating for me. If I start the day out feeling grateful for the really kick-ass pot I’m cooking my oatmeal in, it seems everything after that looks rosier.
Maschy, call me a masochist but I sort of like the speed work. The running program I’m following has the target pace times which are hard but not cringe-worthy. I am so happy that something I wrote helped you. Your kind words have helped me lots and lots of times, so I’m happy to return the favor.
git, I really have benefited from your suggestion of focusing on GMs and lower back work and putting deadlifts on the back burner for a bit. That’s been my focus since October and three months into it, I feel its paying off. Patience is definitely a virtue.
Last night we decided to try out the local $10/month gym, just to see what it was like. It was crowded (no surprise) and had just the basics for barbells, benches and free weights. Two smith machines and no squat rack means it would be a non-starter to switch gyms. But it was interesting to see a new place.
Bench Press (5s Day)
Bar 1 x 5
62# 1 x 5
72# 1 x 5
81.5# 1 x 6 <–rep PR +1, last few reps were butt-off-bench ugly, but I’m taking 'em.
BBB 65# 5 x 10
supersetted with
Kroc Rows
45# 5 x 7
I was happy to get 7 reps on all five sets of Kroc rows (up from 5 reps each set last time). I’ll try for additional reps at 45 until I can work up to 5 x 10, and then I’ll heave the 50# DB around
1-armed DB press
30# 6R/5L
25# 2 x 10
And then I felt done.
Good job on the running - wish I could be there with you. (Damned achilles tendon).
You’re making great strides - literally - there and in the weight room.
Im late to the BIG PR PARTY!!! CONGRATS, Ive been playing around with sumo, the hips need time to make friends, they arent playing nice yet
Hopefully taking the weight back they loosen up to the idea.
This is a great way to start 2012!
Just on the “Kroc” rows, they are typically one all-out set for higher reps after a few warm-up sets. Rather than 5 x 10, take that same weight and see if you can get 20. Right around rep 15 it will start to suck - but don’t quit.
Maybe mix up both approaches and see how you respond to each.
Don’t be a form nazi about it. Just grip and rip.
Hey look at the bench PR.
I don’t think I could work out at a Planet Fitness either.
Cal, I wish you could be running with me too. Although you are broken alot, you also have been healing up and getting back to your activities. I hope that is true with the foot stuff as well.
Up, thanks for the kind words! Sumo is not for everyone, hips being a limiting factor for sure. I hope it works for you eventually.
git, for sure I can’t get very many more reps than 10 with the 45s even done on one set. Fatigue sets in fairly soon. That said, there is nothing to be lost for trying!
Joe, agreed. But I’d never been in one and it was interesting to see what it was about. Now I’m much more OK with spending SUBSTANTIALLY more than $10/month on my gym.
Yesterday’s training was a 4 mile tempo run in the cold rain. The rain was actually not that bad even though the temp was about 37 degrees F (about 3 degrees C) and windy. The goal was to hit sub 8:54 pace during the middle two miles and I hit that with some room to spare.
Squats tonight!

If you know that you can only do one all-out set, so that you don’t consciously or subconsciously leave some in the tank for subsequent sets, you might be surprised by what you can do.
“damned lucky” now see I can get with that!
Everything is awesomer with the word DAMNED!
Some Damned fine lifting in here GORL.
My understanding of Kroc rows is the same as Git’s. One warmup set w/lighter weight–one work set, all out, body english allowed.
I like coming in here, you keep reminding me I have to change up my running. It’s so hard for me to break the steady state habit and do the quality work.
