Tiny Freak Goes Ninja

Was the language actually bothering you? For me it depends on the day of the week. I’m certainly the last one to complain about blue verbiage but sometimes when it’s loud and endless, it’s a bit much. So, when asked, I likely would have said, yeah, it’s a bit much.

That’s a super awkward situation though. It’s like your virgin ears were the bone between two dogs. Did any of them try to piss on you to mark their territory?

It wasn’t up to you to handle and your response of leaving was probably the best thing to do to keep it from escalating. That’s pretty fucking irritating though.[/quote]

No, the language was fine with me. It was the CONFLICT into which I was being dragged that irritated me. Frankly, I’m still pretty fucking irritated. Luckily I’m about to go out for a nice seafood dinner and plan to have an ENORMOUS cocktail. That will do me right.

And, at least I got a few good girl/bad girl and pec-dec sets in. I don’t usually set foot in the machine room, but those aren’t bad.

Not gonna lie. If the guys were being dicks, I probably would have told them that they were being dicks. I have a habit of saying things like that. I probably also would have been a little irritated by the idea that anyone should watch what they say because I’m female. That’s such bullshit. I’m sure I could out-cuss half the motherfuckers at the gym.

That’s just a crappy situation and really not your problem. Nothing wrong with walking away.

Kimba: Pretty awesome bench PR. And snatch is an awesome word. But seriously, I’m pretty intimidated by explosive weighted movements…so I doubt I’ll be jumping in to do those right away.

Re the gym scene: I know you know how to be assertive. I don’t doubt that leaving was the right call. People are unpredictable and it’s not your job to resolve the disputes of the people in the gym.

Heh, I understand your discomforture. There’s a few black guys who train at my gym - all nice, friendly guys but they talk constandly at a volume I would consider shouting. I am quite sensitive to loud noise and I find it very off-putting.

Very nice work from you in any case - lotta volume there, and a PR. Good stuff.

Great bench PR Kimba!

Juniormint gave some good pointers on the DB snatches, so I won’t repeat them.

I think I’d watch my language with a lady in the weight room, but there are no women in my weight room - ever - so I’ve never had to worry about it.

Shame it disturbed your workout - I’m sure the first guy had goot intentions, but telling the other guys to watch their language wasn’t likely to be productive. I don’t think I would bother unless I knew for sure it was making a women uncomfortable.

What can I say, boys will be boys…x10 in the presence of an attractive woman…

Great job on the PR bench!

hmm… i think that guy shouldn’t have told them to watch their language because there was a lady in the room precisely because it puts you in an awkward position. if it bugged him he should have said that it bugged him. i think i would have done what you did - responded honestly then left or else blasted some music through my headphones to drown it all out.

with the snatches…

i practice the hip drive sometimes. holding a weight standing up then you sit your ass back a little (like a romanian deadlift) and drive your hips through quickly. when you get it right you should feel the weight jump up a little in your hand without using your hand / arm to lift it at all. then it is just about humping it harder to get it jump higher.

i’ve played with one-arm barbell snatches - which are a lot like the dumbbell ones. i have trouble getting myself under it, though, because it takes a lot of shoulder / thoracic flexibility to have your arm holding the weight centered above you so the squat is balanced. i’m not that flexible yet, but kinda working on it.

congrats on your bench!

congrats on the rackpull and bench PR

hammies look as nomm as the arms

If someone would have asked me if I was bothered by the language I would have said “Fuck No.” lolz

It kinda sounded like new guy knew he had your “attention” and was trying to capitalize on the situation. Next time maybe say, “If the language bothered me I would have stopped lifting years ago. Nice Zerchers btw.”

I need more info on the supper situ - what was seafood dinner like and what type of coctail?

On the one hand I’m certain nothing they could say would be shocking to you. On the other hand there is a level where you just don’t act in public generally. I confess I have a filthy mouth but I try not to be so in public.

Leaving was probably the best thing. It just sucks that those guys acted like A-holes in a public place.

BG, I am only confrontational if there is something in it for me to justify the risk. Let’s just say that in my line of work I deal with alot of stupid, tragic shit and am very attuned to keeping myself safe.

Nadia, word.

Cal, I was feeling ninja-esque on the volume yesterday. Today I’m a bit stiff and sore. And I’m surprised! Seriously, that is fucked up…the surprise, not the DOMS.

ManfromMA, I really hope you wouldn’t watch your language once you got to know me. I like authenticity and comradery better than the pedestal. But I also understand that years of socialization do a number on both men and women, so its all good.

Germanone, thanks! Its actually quite a big deal to get any PR on the bench for me. Gains are few, far between and very incremental on upper body lifts.

alexus, I love the sound of that hip drive drill! I’m totally putting that in my vacation rotation.

Frenchie, now that was the perfect comeback! I wish I had thought of that. Seafood dinner was oysters on the half shell to start with a “skinny pina colada” made with coconut water instead of the creamy coconut stuff. Both quite delicious. Also a few dips into the communal hot creamy crab dip. Then onto the entree of grilled steelhead trout over swiss chard and brown rice. Dessert was a chocolate layer cake and strawberry shortcake shared with the entire table of family members.

Now that’s a sammich, people.

Joe, I’m sure to like your filthy mouth…again real over fake gets me every time.

Today’s training was a successful run/walk for 35 minutes consisting of 4 min. easy strides/1 min walk x 7. All I wanted out of this run was to be able to do the NEXT run which will be (goddess willing and the creek don’t rise) on Wednesday in my beautiful hometown in Sonoma County, CA. Took it very easy on pace and my knee responded brilliantly with no pain or even pre-pain. YAY!

Well that even more outstanding!!!

I’m sure I wouldn’t once I got to know you - I have female friends who have heard me swear up a blue streak - but in front of a lady I didn’t know, it would just come naturally.

So, my squats may suck. But check this out, ladies and gentlemen:

Bench Press
85# 1 x 9 <–rep PR +2

Yeah!

Apparently I really am getting stronger on bench.

Waiting to board the plane that is taking me to vacation. I am without my fractional plates, so we’ll see what I can cobble together at the various gyms that I’ll have access to for the next two weeks.

you GO gurl!!!

Safe travels…a two week vacation sounds great.

Great job Kimba!

I always have the perfect comeback once the opportunity is gone. lol

great bench PR and enjoy your vacay!

What a great way to start off your vacation, with a big time PR.

Good work, now enjoy your trip and safe travels.

Yesterday’s first day of vacation training was a 30 min. run/walk in the cool fog of the early morning. I found a paved bike path which dumped me out onto a trail right next to a rancher’s fence so I ran off-road for a while. I had forgotten about running in the cool air and not sweating buckets.

After that was a good 45 min. of rehab stretching, rolling and strengthening at my mom’s gym while I waited for her geriatric water aerobics class to be over. Then a massage. My IT band feels a bit worked after all of this, so no lower body today.

Today will be kayaking! Have a great day, all.

Way to go, Kimba, you’re doing it, gal!
On the squats…30 years ago when I was competing in powerlifting, my squat was my weakest link. But then I made the connection that it was probably because I HATED squats…so I didn’t put much energy into it.

I psyched my mind around to liking squats, and looking forwards to squat days, telling myself that squats represented my greatest opportunity for improvement.

And lo and behold, they DID improve massively. I started winning “Best Lifter” of the women at meets, despite not winning best lift on either of the 3 (except for occasionally Best Bench). And that was my goal–to win the whole shootin’ match, not just be a one-trick pony like so many of my competitors.

I can relate to the cussin’ in the gym…right now I’ve got a new co-worker who has shouting matches over the phone with his ex-wife several times a week. The next time it happens, I WILL tell him “TMI, dude, take your personal phone calls outside like everyone else does!” I swear, when I get promoted to manager, I’ll have an informal policy against talking to ex-wives or ex-husbands on the phone in the building!

Anyhow, just wanted to encourage you to keep up what you’re doing–at least you don’t have the added obstacle of having a bunch of fat you have to lose, like most of us do, so you’re one step ahead of the game there!

Good job on the PR! And have a great holiday, you’ve earned it.
