Tiny Freak Goes Ninja

Laughing about your reunion story. I was very pregnant at my 10th. So not impressing anyone! I’ll bet you were the hottie at the 25th.

I have the Fivefinger Sprints in black just like Buckeye and I do really, really like them. I don’t wear them to run in, just for lifting because I like the barefoot feel. And yes, they are kind of Fugly. There are now so many vibram wearers at my gym, nobody even bats an eye. Little kids do have a lot of questions, and tend to think they are WAY cool. Warning, they might make your calf bigger! Several people have noted that little side effect.

Traveling this weekend…Lake Placid is beautiful. Lifting and cycling and a nice run around the lake are on the agenda. There is no sun here either, but I’m hoping that will change today. Be back soon with details!

profoundly jealous.

Its nice that you can stil get your lifting in on vacation.

Remember shes like a little kid in a candy store at a new gym…

Have a good time!

just catching up! Sounds like summer time fun is in full swing!! And keeping up with the training of course.

Well, the weather wasn’t the greatest (rain, mist, a bit of sun) on Sunday which was the designated ride day. So no ride, but I had a great day anyway trying out a kayak for the first time. Kayaking is fun! Who knew? I really don’t have any time for another hobby, but I sure enjoyed paddling with the ducks.

Friday training (at the local)
Sumo Deadlift Day
from floor
95# 1 x 5
115# 1 x 5
135# 1 x 5
155# 1 x 3
belt on:
175# 1 x 2

Rack Pulls (1 riser/1 step)
185# 1 x 3
205# 1 x 2 <–OK. I was done after this, though

This was my first deadlift day in my new Vibram FiveFinger Komodo Sports. It took me several pulls to get used to the feel of the shoes, but I like these quite well. GREAT traction for sumo stance. And I can curl my toes down for a death grip on the floor while pulling, which feels very stable.

Military press (5s day)
45# bar 1 x 5
48# 1 x 5
54# 1 x 6 <–happy with this

BBB with light oly bar 10/5 then ran out of time.

Sunday training at the hotel gym, which was decent. There were dumbbells, two benches and a cable machine with a chin up bar.

DB Bench
20s 1 x 10
30s 2 x 10

Goblet squats
40# DB 3 x 10

Cable hip ad/abductions
5# 1 x 10, 1 x 20

Pallof press
The alphabet x 2 (one on each side)

I stole this one from Tony Gentilcore. Surprisingly difficult

Chinups
5/5/5/3/3 = total of 21

supersetted with

Cable pullthroughs
60# 1 x 10
80# 1 x 10
100# 1 x 10
120# 1 x 10

1 armed DB waiter’s walks
3 x length of weight room (out and back)

Then I tried to do some DB shoulder presses, but I was toasted.

Then it was off to paddle around the lake in a kayak (fun!) and then eat a big, delicious dinner. Think salmon oscar with crab and orange scented hollandaise sauce. I do so love eating on vacation.

This was the view on my hotel balcony this morning. Mirror Lake, downtown Lake Placid and the pool around which I sunned myself like a lizard for a few minutes before running off to work.

First thing after I got up, I put on my running stuff and headed out for a run around this lake. There is a red brick paved path all the way around it…probably 2.75 miles or so. The world was still quiet and the fog was just burning off while I ran. Just gorgeous.

The town was FULL, and I mean FULL of triathletes. Apparently there was an Ironman triathlon here. What a treat being in a place where most folks were wearing running shoes, hiking trekkers or were whizzing by on their tri bikes. I ran by the swim staging area to find a gaggle of fit young men in swim trunks diving in for training. Delicious.

The good news is that I did a 4 min strides/1 min walk x 6. The last time I did 6 of these intervals, I twanged my IT band. Today, it was all good. And no side stitches at all, for a pleasant and joyful time.

Back home and the craziness starts up again tomorrow.

sounds like you’re finding your balance!

happy for you, and a lil jealous. more happy tho.

Lovely pic! Sounds like a great trip - a change of scenery is always good. And how gorgeous to run outside, on a lake…love it!

Can I just say, the black on black with the vibrams is totally badass! Super sexy and stealth, and your back and arms are seriously amazing.

ecreepin’ aside…

Nice pulling! I don’t blame you for being done after the 205, looked good! Do you still feel the rack pulls are helping with your regular DL?

Nice chins!!

Just looked up the pallof press. interesting…

Heh, my ARTist does Ironmans - she’s Canadian. Wonder if she was there?
The run sounds lovely. I’d have preferred trail, personally - I try to avoid hard surfaces as much as possible. Did you run in your Vibrams?

Nice pulling, too. The shoes are cute.

I can picture you training/doing triathlons!

I love being out on the water, so peaceful… Nice running and Dl’ing there!

Lifting looked good and it sounds like you are having a wonderful time. Enjoy the vacation.

CBear, finding balance is a daily exercise. I am one of the luckiest people on the planet because I love what I do for work and play…well, most days.

Maschy, we e-creep each other roughly equally so does it cancel out? I’ll admit that I was going for the Ninja look with the all black and then HELLO SHOES. Frankly there is no subtle way to wear Vibrams. I do still think that the rack pulls are helpful. That exercise really cues me to strengthen my “hip thrust” in a way that nothing else ever has. Its almost time to ditch the risers and go with just the step.

Cal, I love the term ARTist. I’m totally stealing that one. I did not run in the Vibrams, but rather in my Nike Frees. Having carefully babied my IT band to its current state of OKness, I’m reluctant to change up the shoes quite yet. I have walked about 20 minutes at a time in the Vibrams on pavement which felt fine. I plan on ramping up the time in them very, very slowly. Doing too much too fast (TMTF) is the number one reason folks get injured in minimalist footwear. I know that my tendons, bones, ligaments, etc. need to adapt to these shoes and heck, I’ve got the time.

Betty, although I very much admire triathletes, that is not one of my aspirations. Frankly, I hate swimming and am not interested in regularly dunking this expensive head of hair in any sort of pool/lake/sea water. Vanity thy name is Kimba.

Joe, that little mini-vacation was much-needed in my household. Sometimes business travel works out great, and this was one of those times.

Today is a rest day. Really a misnomer for a work day/laundry day/try to catch up with my life after two weekends in a row away day. Wish me luck.

good luck on playing catch up

I love kayaking - it’s something I do try to add to my summer list of things to do before shitty winter hits us.

Thanks Frenchy. So far today I’m losing the battle.

Today was volume day on squats and bench and frankly I sucked. Tired, and the body wouldn’t really cooperate. I’ll take a couple of days to get my head back in the game and give the weights another go on Friday.

Last night after a late meeting didn’t go quite as late as I’d anticipated, I got home in time to take a short walk before sunset. I put on my Five Fingers Komodo Sports and headed down my street. One of my neighbors was out walking (a lady in her 70’s I’d guess) and stopped me to ask about my shoes. She loved them and wanted to know where she could get a pair. So, yeah. If I thought I was a walking freak show before, now its REALLY true.

I’m up to 20 minutes of walking in these toe shoes and tried a tiny bit of breaking into a short jog a couple of times. Its a very different feeling running in Vibrams as opposed to the Nike Frees. Again, I don’t plan on running in the Vibrams, but just satisfying a bit of my curiosity as to what “barefoot” running feels like.

Today’s training was a sunny, low-humidity, beautiful morning run. My goal was to run/walk for 35 minutes which is 5 minutes longer than I’ve done in a long while…well, since my knee screwed me over back in January. Mission accomplished. 4 min. strides/1 min walk x 7 for a slow 5K. I think I’ve finally learned my lesson about pushing both the pace and the distance in one run. My knee feels fine right now (knock on wood).

Taking things slow, steady and easy is just SO not my style. This running business has been a huge learning experience for me.

Sounds like a beautiful day to be training outside. So how do you like the Vibram Komodos? I have had my KSOs for a couple of years now. I used to get crazy looks because they were pretty obscure then. Now it seems like they are popping up everywhere. I was guest lecturing for a Research Methods class yesterday, and a huge football player had a pair on.

I freakin’ LOVE my Komodos. Neither the Classics nor the Sprints fit me at all – to the point where it was painful to try to squeeze my toes into them. The new models (Treksports, Bikilas & Komodos) all fit me well. The traction on the Komodos is truly outstanding.

Honestly, I’ve seen only a couple of Vibrams in the wild around here so far. I’m actively trying to get my husband and some friends interested so that I have more company with my monkey-feet.

That sounds like a nice day to get outside, get some sun and run.

There are lots of vibrams at my gym.
