Timing the Protein Shake

my mornings look like this:

6:45am wake up, breakfast smoothie

8:00am train

9:00am PWO shake

9:15am PWO meal

My Question: i cannot change any of these times, which means that my PWO meal comes only 20 mins after my PWO shake, therefore not allowing the shake enough time in my body so unfortunately it mixes with the meal :frowning:

My proposed solution: have the protein shake AS I WORKOUT, instead of my usual bottle of water. thoughts on this? will it still be absorbed as easily?

comments appreciated! =D

real food = protein shakes. protein shakes are supplemental to your food intake, you drink them around your meals, you donā€™t structure your mealtimes around shake times.

there is nothing wrong with drinking a shake during a workout. your body will absorb it just fine. you might as well throw carbs and bcaaā€™s in there to further fuel your workouts. additionally, this saves you a bit of time during the day, giving you a chance to take in 500 cals or so where you otherwise would have to squeeze a snack in.

real food = protein shakes???

i am not structuring meals around shake, if you read the OP carefully you will see that the opposite is the case

thanks, this is the answer i was looking for

why do i need these when my breakfast smoothie already contains enough fast release carbs to fuel my workout, as well as coffee granules and creatine powder to give me a boost in the morning

the issue is not about my meals throughout the day, i take at least 4 meals with me in tuberware throughout the day.

The issue is that i workout, have the PWO shake, then 15 mins later i eat solid food. what im asking is whether the close proximity of the solid food to the PWO shake will damage the effectiveness of the shake? my proposed solution therfore was to move the shake to earlier, replacing my normal water supply when i work out. this was in the hope that it would give the protein more time to get into my muscles before the PWO solid meal comes along and mixes with it, hindering its absorbtion time.

sorry if i didnt make the issue clear in the OP, and i appreciate your help dude

anyone elses views?

I know that I am going to get flammed for this but oh well. Skip the shake and have the meal instead. I would try to have both simple and complex carbs and a good lean protein source. Have the shake later if you need more pro/kcals to meet goals. Donā€™t over-analyze

IrishOak, about a year ago I switched to drinking a shake during my workout (based on the Anaconda Protocol) as opposed to drinking it after my workouts; and it has worked out well for me. The actual Anaconda Protocol is too expensive for me, so I mix my own hydrolyzed whey protein (50g), waxi maize (40g), tri-creatine malate (10g), and citrulline malate (7g) with 30-40oz of water and drink it during my warm-up, throughout my workout, and finish it while Iā€™m in the shower after my workout. The total peri-workout supplement costs me about $2.30. (Iā€™ve also experimented with beta alanine and additional leucine, but I donā€™t think their results warranted the extra cost.) I eat whole food about 30-45 minutes after I finish my peri-workout shake. Iā€™m real happy with this routine, and will probably not go back to drinking just water during my training sessions.

^Looks good, IMO. I donā€™t really have anything useful to add other than I would also move the PWO shake to a ā€˜duringā€™ shakeā€¦ If you want to get precise

I often do what Mateus recommended and just skip the protein shake. Depending on how many total calories your shake plus food equals it may or may not be productive to have both in so close proximity. Sounds like you have settled on having it during the workout and that works just fine too. Like Mateus also said, ā€œDonā€™t over-analyze.ā€ Me, I just eat.

Agree 100%

/facepalm

sorry that was a typo. I meant to write real food > protein shakes.

but as mentioned above, eating that soon after your shake wonā€™t hurt, but I would prioritize eating real food over drinking a shake.

I used to drink creatine immediately post workout with a protein shake to ā€œmaximize absorptionā€. I also got bloated, and my appetite was shot all to hell for hours. since I moved the creatine to later in the day and made the protein shake supplemental to real food intake, I was able to eat more real food.

Thanks guys i got some good responses here so i appreciate it. My mornings will therefore look like this:

6:45AM wake up, smoothie (2 bananas, whey protein, coffee granules, creatine, ice, water)

8 to 9AM Train, whilst sipping from a watery protein shake as opposed to just water

9:15AM PWO meal- chicken breast, potatoes, carrots and gravy.

Immediately after PWO meal: take creatine, multivitamin and fish oils washed down with glass of water, then start my day.
