Thoughts on Supersets

I’d wager most consider a “finisher” as some semblance of a burn out set, extended drop set, pump set…

That’s what I think it refers to also. For instance, incline bench but after your last set do partials, rack the weights, then do a static hold.

Many variations I’m sure…none of which are effective at anything other more fatigue

I’m not sure I completely agree.

I sometimes end a workout doing something like a farmers walk or abdominal work. There is a psychological benefit for me.

If your programming is good, you certainly don’t need to add more volume. But abdominal work is not particularly recovery intensive. Farmers walks are more tiring, but they work a lot of muscles so the load is shared. One need not go to exhaustion.

Like anything else, it is a tool in the toolbox. You don’t have to use special techniques, and don’t want to use them all the time.

I like TC Luoma’s views on how aging lifters might proceed. He talks about the importance of increasing volume and work capacity, which might require more use of special techniques.

Love my carries… once every 3 days or so

I like farmers walks, and will do them if feeling pumped. I specifically build them into the end of some of my workouts.

In addition to the usual variations, I particularly enjoy walking with a heavy barbell extended above my head. Maybe it reminds me of the cheesy wrestlers I watched growing up? Very few people in the gyms I frequent do this move.
