Interesting and unique idea. I have heard great things about fasting, and some people think its the stupidest idea. What does everyone think about it?
I think it’s a stupid idea.
Can you explain it.
From what I’ve seen, it looks like eating 3 meals a day would be intermittent fasting compared to 6 meals a day.
Hershel Walker supposedly ate one meal a day, listen to the thousand people on here explain it he was just the genetic freak of the century, but maybe he happened upon a diet similar to intermittent fasting that works.
From what I am gathering intermittent fasting is fasting for about 16 hours only eating in an 6-8 hour window centered around your workout with the bulk of the calories coming PWO (3 meals).
this is Marting Berkhan’s website and apprentaly Lyle McDonald is writing a book on the subject. He shows some of his clients transformation’s and his own. You can’t knock the results, but most of them were already pretty lean to begin with.
Wrong website to ask about this. Intermittent fasting is probably not the best idea for bodybuilding. I have seen the leangains site before, and I actually tried it. Although I surprisingly did not lose much muscle, and did lose a fair amount of fat, my workouts were horrible.
I don’t see how someone could gain muscle on this diet. It does have merits in life extension and overall health though.
Go to: mindandmuscle.net or imminst.org and do a search. There are some really good threads there.
I figured i would get flamed because this IS a BB website. But i thought an 8 hour window of food is enough for a decent workout, especially if your goal is fat loss and not strength.
I don’t think i am going to do this but i just thought it was an interesting thought.
From a biological standpoint, our bodies are still hardwired to live on DAYS without foods since most of our ancestors were hunter-gatherer’s and had to hunt for their food. I dont want to get into a debate about our biological backgrounds but i just thought I would throw that out there.
I remember that Shugart did an interview with a 70 something year old guy who really promoted this…Art something.
I don’t like it, though.
What’s the point? to get rid of toxins?
The liver does that quite nicely assuming you don’t eat junk like most people.
Tell a starving person that you’re purposely starving yourself and they’ll smack you.
Actually the main benefit is dramatically reduced insulin resistance. This is scientific fact, and it is certainly a compelling reason to follow this diet.
I would definitely recommend it to the average person who is aiming for overall health, and who doesn’t worry about their physique. It’s still not conducive to bodybuilding though.
But from what I hear on some other forums, there is no hunger. Hunger pangs may come, but only last for about 15 minutes then subside and you “feel a sense of overwhelming calmness.” You still get in a lot of kcals in a day its just all in one 8hr window.
There is no proof that “stoking the metabolic fire” can even happen, and there are mixed results of tests done on meal frequency (some say 2 meals, some say 6-8).
It’s not optimal for gaining mass, but it has produced muscle gains for some. But for someone with a hectic schedule like I do (work 10hrs straight, no breaks) this may be something to think about.
I know this is a BB site, but I also know I will never walk out on stage, i have higher priorities. However, I do admire and respect body building and for people on this site that aspire to dominate the stage.
I wish i had the time and determination to have the physique like prisoner, dirty gerdy, professor X etc…Yet, i don’t, so I have to work with what I got (which isn’t much lol). I may try this in the future, and see how it works in the “real world”
ps…CELTICS JUST MADE THE GREATEST COMEBACK IN NBA POSTSEASON HISTORY!!! Championship #17 here we come!
You will have greatly increased energy. The hunger pains do go away as well.
The main reason I couldn’t continue experimenting with it was getting extremely low blood sugar. One time I helped my friend move while fasting, and I threw up from the nausea. I have cortisol issues though, and that would directly effect it.

My problem with the whole ‘our ancestors did x…’ argument is that, if the claim is we have not evolved from the way we physiologically adapt to changes in diet (since THOSE days), how can you call the body “the ultimate adaptive machine” and legitimately change how macros are processed and prioritized within a 2-3 week time frame? (e.g., the break in period of the Anabolic Diet)
In other words, why is it that we haven’t changed from caveman days but at the same time, we can force our bodies to adapt to processing fats more efficiently for fuel - a drastic change for most people - in under 30 days?
Something doesn’t sound right.
I didnt want to get into this arguement haha but, for most of our ancestors, how did they survive in the winter? Off of fats and protein, they weren’t eating plants and berries in a winter wonderland.
There bodies were just as adaptive as ours are now at using fat as fuel. Our DNA hasn’t changed at all (millionths of a percent) since the cavemen. Our phenotypes may have changed since we are very adaptive that way, but our genotypes are the same.
I do it whenever I feel like it. Usually because I personally get a good workout on an empty stomach–gets me fired up sometimes.
I think it’s great for health and “fitness”.
For bodybuilding and gaining mass the fastest and most efficient way possible? Not optimal IMO.
I actually do this not realising it.
for instance work out days look like this.
am=eggs, milk,steak or chicken,
am#2= egg, bacon, steak burrito and iced tea
pre workout shake
post workout carne asada burrito and diet coke, grilled chicken dark green salad
shake on the way home
dinner steak or chicken with milk and supps.
non work out days
am=2 eggs
lunch= steak or chicken sometimes tuna salad
dinner= steak or chicken milk and supps
I do have a couple snacks in between like beef jerky or something but not usualy.
this is on top of my sups like fish oil and stuff which I take all the time no mater what.
I dont try for this diet its just how it happens and i see no strength loss, granted I am not body building.
usually I am not hungry on non workout days.
however I work out 3-4 times a week so I have more w/o days than non.w/o days
I know its a horrible diet but its what works for me
some times on my non work out days I feel like I am starving myself because I am not eating, sometimes I go all day without eating because I dont feel like it but I dont feel hungry or sick or anything.
on my work out days if I eat less that what I do then I feel crappy all day for a few days after.

Art devany (at website of same name). I like some of his ideas, but he gets a little zealous at times. However, he only recommends fasting one of every three or so days, just eating nothing after lunchtime until breakfast the next day.
Haven’t tried that, but I have done the warrior diet - it feels excellent, your body releases opiates after a certain period of fasting, which is why this diet is addictive and feels so damn good. Is it useful for gaining musclemass? As everyone’s said, not so much. But it’s certainly fun to try out.
If your nutrition is in order, your are good to go I think. The body has its own mechanisms for removal, allow them to work on its own.

This is a very interesting piece from one of my favorite nutrition authors, Alan Aragon.
