Thoughts on Collective Guilt

A nice benefit from training in the martial arts and spending alot of years sparring hard, is that you can learn to read people and get a feel for their intentions. I’ve been in the ring and have had some damn hard exchanges with people of all colors, and I’m definitely way more comfortable in getting a feel for someone because of it.

You can’t judge a book by it’s cover, and anybody is capable of anything. Dirtbags come in all shapes, colors, and sizes. And none of them dress “typical”.

I AGREE…add experience working in prisons and booking in “everyday” people for a wide range of violent crimes.
Add in growing up in the same culture and you can see why most blacks (especially under the age of 35) don’t walk around judging people wearing Fubu in a negative light.

I asked for pictures earlier so I could get a feel for exactly what people even THINK they are seeing. I keep getting told some extreme take on styles that were popular 15 years ago that most don’t even wear anymore.

Clearly, someone’s perception is off…and it isn’t that of the people who see nothing wrong with platinum chains and a white t-shirt with AirForce Ones on their feet.

I am assuming many of the people who think this way are headed towards retirement soon.

People that judge someone before they can speak or act will always be behind the curve and less evolved socially. Regardless if that guy in the white shirt, platinum chains, etc. may more often than not sound like an idiot when they open their mouth or act the fool, truly evolved people wait for that moment to pass their judgement(edit: TRULY evolved don’t pass judgement)

I agree. Speaking of perception…well maybe a little off topic…but I was parking at the store…and at the same time a big Yukon with some 22" Dub Edition rims and little what-nots pulls up beside me. I don’t think nothing about it,right.

Then this mid 50’s old white guy…looking like my old high school principal gets out of the vehicle. I couldn’t help but ask myself “I wonder how many times he beens followed by cops?” Just a random thought…I’m tired as hell.

And, “frightened” is too strong of a word, by the way. I’m more alert. My reaction is to keep him in my peripheral. And, if the person seems to be headed straight for me, I’ll make direct eye contact and say, “hello, how are you doing?” Then I’ll see what happens next. It’s not as if I’m pulling a gun and screaming for a cop. My instincts are built from real world experiences. And though I’m one of those collectively guilty, white americans you fear, my life experiences might just count for something.

No, most of us would still call that “frightened”.

You can come up with as many names for it as you wish, but it won’t change much. Unless someone is threatening you, your own level of alert based on appearance is nothing but fear of what you think MAY happen.
Not buying your tough guy act either.

You might like to describe yourself as this huge, martial arts trained, omniscient badass, but I live in the real world. In the real world you make priorities of where your awareness focuses. Because, unlike your fantasy image of yourself, human beings can’t be aware of everything around them at all times. Doesn’t happen. You can sit here and continue spinning tall tales about yourself, but human limitations are fact. The things people will lie about, in order to duck conceeding a point. I swear.

Because violent street crimes aren’t being committed by the guys wearing dockers and button collar shirts.

Well, it IS nice if the person announces (with clothing, tats, etc) their violent or sick nature before they actually perpetrate something. I guess the more intelligent criminals WOULD dress in Armani suits and make eloquent speeches before thousands of swooning idiots.

Just curious HH, are you implying that someone with visible tattoo’s makes you think “criminal”?
Tatts would make me alert to the person.

I’m being real. Unfortunately, some folks around here foolishly cling to PC sentiments. And, can’t even be honest. Neighborhoods aren’t being shot up by guys that looks like this. He isn’t the guy one worries about, because he’s behind you waiting to use the ATM. That guy isn’t going to rob me, or car jack me, or jump me with a bunch of his friends because he doesn’t like my pasty skin color.

Not thug.

Thug look. And, well, the groups seems to actually realize, and in fact claim, that they look like thugs.

Thats a statement of irony.

So here’s a question on the above mentioned…what DO those people look like and what DO they wear?? Not to be a dick, but maybe your perception and stereotypes are only based on your bad experiences…and are not general enough.

thug??

And what if they didn’t claim anything? Russel Simmons is an icon…not some dude you see on the street.

Didn’t he work in the top echelon at Enron?Or Worldcom?

Oh no ,wait, that would be us white guys…

Since we’re talking crime and all that.

You’ve never seen Russel Simmons on the street?! Seriously though, I’m talking about his clothing and posture. You can imagine Joe Q. public wearing the same clothes, if you want. Not thug.

What?! I can take the white collar criminal to court, later on. Hopefully, in the scenario of a violent street crime, I’m not bleeding out from a gun shot wound. Than there is no recovery for damage if some thug has blown my brains out for the $20 I had on me… Ugh, please follow along.

Not thug.

Still not thug.
