This Man Needs Help (US Vet)

And he also fought in three wars and is still raising hell at 90 years old.

Good for Barfoot

I don’t really see how this is an issue at all.

Maybe he should move somewhere without a homeowner’s association if he wants to put up ugly flagpoles on his property and not have anybody care.
It isn’t an issue. He fought for his rights and he won.
It had nothing to do with “rights”. He entered into a contract when purchasing his home. The neighborhood, where he purchased the home, had a covenant with set rules. He chose to ignore those rules. Now since he “fought for his rights” and is now allowed to fly a flag, does that mean other homeowners in the community get to pick and choose what rules to follow?

My home owners association covenant has some silly rules in it. Since I “fought for the country”, does that mean I get to break whatever rules I want?
OctoberGirl wrote:

When will everyone learn that this nation was created by people who broke the rules?

That has nothing to do with a homeowners association’s covenant and its contents, which the man voluntarily signed.

I understand the situation clearly.

What I take issue with is yet another example of the hero worship of service members. As someone pointed out previously, what about the doctor who lives around the corner? Why can’t he break the rules and fly a flag. After all, he saves lives.

Hell, I did a tour in Iraq. Can I break my neighborhood covenant rules and put my jeep on cinder-blocks in my front yard for a few months? I mean, I “fought for the country”, right?

I doubt I will be able to sleep tonight because, according to you, Barfoot is “10 times” the man I will ever hope to be.

Which, coincidentally, makes me at leat five times the man you are since I was awarded a Bronze Star whilst deployed…according to your logic.

Some of you lose all ability of rational thought when the issue involves an individual who is/was in the military.
Wow.

You’ve outdone yourself here.

“He’s a vet,” huh?

Just like you, right?

Sheesh.
Oh, I certainly wouldn’t compare myself to him. He’s part of the “Greatest Generation”, remember?

It’s not too suprising that some of you here don’t understand the concept of liberty.

Britain said that the US had to pay an assload of taxes on tea. Legal issues right? Ok, so we dumped that shit overboard.

Like someone said before, there is “Legal” and “Right”, and when the two rarely have to meet, Right is usually the victor.

The less stupid rules, the better, and where decorum of the Homeowners Association is concerned, I think they need to redefine what “Aesthetically Displeasing” means.

BTW, the doctor may save lives…

But this man brought wounded people to the doctor…

That makes you all the more contemptuous for the contempt you showed for Barfoot in your earlier posts. Bronze Star or no Bronze Star you have relegated yourself to a little bitty man with your sniveling insults to him.

Having said that your service to our country is greatly appreciated.
I don’t have anything against the guy and I don’t see where I was insulting him.

I simply pointed out that he voluntarily entered an agreement (a contract) with the homeowners association and decided not to follow a rule that was stated in the neighborhood covenant. My neighborhood covenant has some silly rules in it too, but I have to follow them or else I’m in breach of contract.

His military service, in my opinion, had nothing to do with abiding by rules set up by the homeowners association. The rest of his neighbors followed the rules, why was he exempt?

When and where did you win you’re Bronze Star? I’m not being confrontational just asking?

how DARE you question the moral integrity of the internet forum??

Let’s assume the contents of this thread don’t exist as they are. Instead, the man we’re petitioned to help here is just a typical middleclass Joe who single-handedly saved an entire boyscout troop from drowning in a flashflood. This man has no military record, and no medals. Instead he gets the attention of the local news and some regional press for his heroism.

Now this same man erects a flagpole on his property, having forgotten (or perhaps was just unaware) that he violated the contract he signed with the Homeowners Association when he moved in several years ago. Now his neighbors are irate, and the Association has warned him to remove the pole or action will be taken.

Now… ignoring the fact that this thread ever existed, and in its place someone posts a thread summoning you all to petition the Association on the man’s behalf… would you?

Do you see what I’m doing here? Where does the line get drawn? At what point DOESN’T a seemingly deserved person have the right to step over the terms of a contract? Who deserves special treatment?

Back to THIS thread: If Col Barfoot were my neighbor, I wouldn’t give a shit about his erecting a flagpole (I’d definitely have a problem if he parked junk cars on his front lawn, though). In my own judgment, my line gets drawn on what the violating circumstances are, not on the individual’s status.

Colonel Van T. Barfort, 90, from Richmond VA is being ordered by his homeowner association to remove the flag pole on his property.

Did you miss it? Look at the Colonel?s picture again. See what?s hanging around his neck? Yep.

The Congressional Medal of Honor.

?The decorated veteran of three wars, now 90 years old, raises the American flag every morning on the pole, then lowers and folds the flag at dusk each day in a three-corner military fashion.?

You pissed yet? If not. Leave. Immediately.

From the Richmond Times Dispatch:

In a priority mail letter, the Coates & Davenport law firm in Richmond is ordering Barfoot to remove the pole by 5 p.m. Friday or face ?legal action being brought to enforce the Covenants and Restrictions against you.? The letter states that Barfoot will be subject to paying all legal fees and costs in any successful legal proceeding pursued by the homeowner association?s board.

Barfoot lives in the Sussex Square community in far western Henrico; its board of directors rejected a plea from Barfoot in July to approve the pole, disallowing the fixture on aesthetic grounds.

You can read the entire article from the Richmond Times Dispatch here.

So here is what all of us need to do for Colonel Barfoot. It is the very least we can do for him in return for his heroic service, sacrifice, and patriotism for us all.

Call and or fax Coates & Davenport, the law firm representing the home owner association.

Just a small correction.

The proper term is the Medal of Honor, or MOH, not the Congressional Medal of Honor. Medal of Honor - Wikipedia

Common mistake though.

Shitty story. That’s what happens when a bunch of Obama supporters live around you.

Really? Where did it say that in the story? Did you miss the part where his Democratic senators went to bat for him.

Maybe it’s moronic statements like this that take away from civilians respect for military personnel.
