About 30. An intelligent women as well. But she was just so sweet and innocent that you could catch diabetes from a conversation with her. Apparently her husband was not much better.

I briefly dated a girl whose mother made comments very similar to this. I was never sure there were derived from ignorance, racism, or a little of both.

The first statement is clearly not racist. It’s historical ignorance. It’s something a non-racist 6 year old would likely ask. Most people learn the answer to this question in early education.

The second is both. Using the term ‘orientals’ is assumedly out of ignorance. My dad, at 65 years old, doesn’t know the difference between ‘oriental’ and ‘asian’, and gets confused when corrected. He has no ill-will toward the Asian population, it’s just a vocabulary issue. Saying a particular race is ‘good at _______’ or ‘bad at _______’ is, by definition, racism.

I know people much worse than described… Growing up in the North East.

Being “southern” has nothing to do with it.

I would disagree with the interpretations of what constitutes “racism,” since I teach sociology.

Racism is broadly defined as the belief, by a person or group, that one race is, by nature, superior to another race or races. A prejudice or stereotype is the holding of an unsupported generalization about a social category of people, e.g., a racial or ethnic group and, yes, prejudices can be be categorized as position, such as the Asian “model minority” stereotype above.

However, based on the second statement, we don’t know whether or not the speaker inherently believes said race is inferior or superior to another based on the good or bad worker mantra, but there is enough evidence to suggest that the speaker is stereotyping based on the holding of a prejudice belief. I’d agree on your assessment of the first statement, however.

Nonetheless, prejudice or stereotypical beliefs are generally the root of racism and scapegoating, but a person can believe and adhere to a prejudice idea without automatically believing that the group in question is naturally inferior to that person by the ascribed status of race or ethnicity.

A woman I used to work with pronounced the city of Detroit as “Dee-Troh-Aht”
Born into an English speaking family, there’s no excuse.

I don’t know. If one is speaking in generalities, or particularly about culture, then you tend to have to speak in those terms. And I’m not convinced it is racist. And if it is, I’m not sure it would have a negative connotation.

I don’t think saying something like “Japanese tend to make good sushi, and don’t make good fajitas” is racist, as food is cultural. (Funny side note: the best roll I’ve ever had was made by a Hispanic dude in his early 20’s on Nantucket.)

Or, what about a statement like “Black athletes tend to be more dynamically athletic than their white counterparts”? I mean, look at the NFL. I mean, is that racist, or is it a commentary (whether right or wrong) about the distribution of the ethnic background distribution across positions?

^that needs an edit, but I don’t care enough to do it. You know what I mean

I think everyone is guilty of not knowing stuff they should know.
I had to make a small village for civics class or tourism class. I told my buddy he need not to make his own since I had a job for him in my village. He was like really what is it, I said with a straight face a jizz mopper. He then was like what is JEEEZ MOPPAR, his english was really funny. No one would tell him so he put up his hand and asked the teacher what a jizz mopper was. She told him to use his imagination!

My girlfriend told me she once had a teacher he drank alot of tea, so one of the students suggested he call him self professor tea-bag. He loved the idea. I think it lasted a few days when another teacher caught on and explained it to him. This also happened at an office she worked at the younger staff had to explain tea-bagging to the older folks for some odd reason. Not really stuff you should know and more so slang differences between generations.

I just remembered another one.

A few years ago I was donating blood and there was a group of 18-20 “bros” who seemed to be making a game of who could fill up their bags the fastest. The guy who won the game filled his blood bag up in five minutes and, as sat up said something along the lines of…

“Hell yeah. You bitches better be calling me Five Minute Frank.”

I’m pretty sure they still call him that.

It’s like an Archie Bunker convention!

I find a lot of that type of stuff hilarious, but I probably have an off-putting sense of humor. Being around a bunch of older-either off the boat or first generation people is comedic gold to me once they get started on the pollocks, degos, etc.

It doesn’t seem to be delivered with any malice between a bunch of guys who all got off of different boats and ended up in the same one.

I thought a Heffalump was one of the two species of camel until I was about 29.

My gf in high school thought you could pregnent from swallowing jizz

The girls in the office had to explaim what ZZ Top meant by ‘peal necklace’ to me a couple of years ago.

One of my few real friends works with a group of kids, that when they get together just crack racist jokes on each other. The Asian and Black dudes typically have the best back and forth.

I mean here is this completely racially diverse group of 6 or 7 people basically making fun of each other not giving two single fucks if the outside world would be offended by the things they say to each other.

It is a very interesting social dynamic, because no one gets offended, no one gets butthurt, no one holds a grudge about it…

This fascinates me.

I am a white kid that grew up about as white and privileged as it gets. Two parents, solidly middle class, big house in the suburbs, college paid for by mom and dad.

One of my best friends in college was a black military veteran from inner-city LA who was at school on the GI Bill. Another good friend was a white kid that grew up in a poor, predominantly black neighborhood in Columbus, Ohio. So we had a rich white kid (me), a poor white kid who grew up with all poor black friends, and a poor black kid.

The three of us lived together for a year in college and, as you describe above, had our fair share of comments that no doubt would have left those without the stomach to take some ribbing open-mouthed. I loved living with those two guys; they just had no filter, but nothing was ever said with any animosity.

It upsets me when the media present a quote without any consideration of the context in which it was uttered. I’m really glad that I’m not a public figure because I’d hate to have every inside joke with my friends parsed apart to the point where the media says “OMG, is he RACIST?”

depends on the colloquial mannerisms and accents of the person and the area they are in.

Dude, you only need to get your mouth around it. Not your whole head.

If I say black males all look alike, am I racist? Because for me they do.
