Things That Make You Happy

Funny you mention that.

I took great care to preserve the legacy of this space. My kid spent a lot of time doing hockey drills down here. He also had many epic knee hockey battles with his buddies when they were younger, hence the arena-like wall decorations.

After installing the mats I was lucky enough to retain the sponsorship of Burger King, Dunkin Donuts, Jet Blue, Visa, Warrior Hockey Equipment and several other big players. Given the violent nature of what we do here, I also thought it was important to keep Milan Lucic in his proper place.

You do have some serious sponsorships. Japan, America are no surprise, but Space Force? I didn’t know that they had hockey up there.

This is more of a silver lining thing. I hate that it’s cold again (feels like 27* F and will only decrease for the next 36 hours) but I like leaving my beer on the back porch instead of putting it in the fridge.

I’ll let the Bruins pennant slide because of the awesomeness of everything else.

Should I ever happen to be in your neck of the woods, I WILL be coming over uninvited to train.

I bought new shoes today. They’re for traversing the frozen tundra to work, once it freezes, because I’ve now gotten three warning tickets about parking across the street from my office, and the last two tickets have said they’re going to tow, though I think maybe that’s an empty threat. I’ve yet to see a tow truck there, towing the other evildoers. Anyway, so I’m parking a distance away and will need something other than the clunky snowshoeing/hiking boots or fashion boots I have. So, done.

But the happy thing isn’t the boots, it’s that I’ve really enjoyed the walks back and forth to my car, which I’ve been moving close to the office in the afternoon so I don’t have to walk to the sketchy area after dark, but am compliant(ish) with the three hour parking limit. Since I’ve been out and wearing comfortable shoes to go get the car, I’ve been wandering around town, and I find the days so much nicer than when I just stayed in my office. I feel better. More awake, less hungry.

Not sure it’ll be this way once the cold sets in, but the new boots are an effort to offset it.

I’m also happy that my husband is around this week. I really like sleeping with him.

That’s totally cool. 5 am on a weekday is best. I’d just need time for coffee and a crap, then I’ll be good to train for an hour or so.

I just learned about Joe Pera. I feel like a lot of his jokes are targeted at people like me, especially as I continue to age. That’s okay, because I like a good joke.

Never take anything for granted:

My favorite Mark Rippetoe words were “Don’t squat when you have to shit, and don’t shit when you have to squat.” Or something close to that.

I almost shit myself on the mats once. I was still quite new, and skipped important business in my rush to make it to class on time.

On the first roll, a 220 lb dude driving his shin into my guts was the first and only time I tapped to knee-on-belly. It was touch-and-go there for a minute, but I made it to the bathroom in time.

Wait, do toilets work differently over there?

They do. They flush UP then down … the cleaning products industry over here is our top industry

OMG, I loved that, and found it concerningly relatable. I had to show one of the barns to my husband because it’s like what we’ve talked about for an old silo base we have.

One of the RAs (a Junior) randomly asked me to flex because he found out I was a “powerlifter” and “admired my strength”

Made me so happy someone outside the gym seemed to appreciate my effort

Can you flex for me?
Great. Now, that top looks a bit restrictive…

Have we ever seen an Anna flex? You’ll flex for strangers but not us?

I didn’t flex for him. It would have required stripping off 3 layers in the middle of a freezing common room

I attended a department lab meeting today (the Social decision sciences professors and grad students gather each week to discuss research)
Professor Lowenstein wanted to discuss “common mistaken beliefs” - I brought up diet dogma and overblown supplements. The professors were actually impressed! One even invited me to sit at the big table!- I didn’t end up accepting though since the only seat was next to Lowenstein…
