Things That Make You Happy

Is the barn loft situp thing from a rocky movie?

That’s really neat

My 9:00 canceled this morning because he had chemo yesterday and wasn’t up to it when the time came, so I had an hour to regroup after the two weeks off. Paperwork is caught up, checks deposited and biller caught up and wished a happy New Year, plants watered, and I’m feeling glad to be here.

I’ve been playing “The Legend of Zelda” since about 1990. I call myself a Legend of Zelda fan. I’ve owned t-shirts and memorabilia with LoZ emblems and icons on it.

…but I always felt like a fraud because I had never beaten a single version of that game. Ever. I had watched my older brother do so growing up, multiple times (he’d get bored and just do a full playthrough on whim), but whenever I would try, I’d eventually run up against some form of resistance and give up.

Until yesterday, where, at the age of 40, on a flight home from an awesome vacation, I beat my first ever Legend of Zelda game: The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening, on my handheld special edition LoZ Game and Watch

I am not longer a fraud

It’s always been my favorite Zelda game, because it doesn’t take itself seriously at all. It has a ton of inside jokes and references to other Nintendo platforms, like a love letter to series fans. Yet it was also so ambitious as a gameboy title! It was like a cut down “Link to the Past”. About the only thing I didn’t care for was the 7th Dungeon, which has one of those notorious Nintendo “Gotchas!” in it where you clearly needed to call the “Power Hotline” or subscribed to Nintendo Power to figure out how to advance forward. I had the foresite to download a walkthrough to my phone before my trip, so I could get some help through it, but otherwise I would have been stuck there until I had internet access again. Also some pretty standard 8-bit era backtracking.

But I had a blast playing it. Great soundtrack, simple controls, easy pick up and play.

It’s cool that it still holds up.

I remember spending time on some games that looking back, seem like torture.

I’m such a dirtbag that this NEVER happens, haha. I always steal from the shopkeeper, to the point that I name my character “THIEF” so that, when the townsfolk call me that, it’s just my name, haha.

@freshyfresh I’ve actually never played it before, and honestly felt like the opportunity had passed me buy until this moment. It’s really cool to see there’s still some hope!

Had a super busy weekend. Didn’t have time to train nor the will. Barely had time to study today because I made it a priority to hang out with my nephew and we spent 3 hours playing this board game called ”Zombicide 2.0”. He absolutely loved the game we played at Christmas called “Heroes of Barcadia” so when I grabbed this and realized it was a harder and more complex version of it, he was going to love it. We got through the tutorial level and he just goes “can we play the next one?”

Hopefully we can do something like this once a month or so with him because after playing board games with my gf with her busy schedule, I realized it’s so nice to have some time to disconnect from screens and intentionally hang out
